Features:

8 Playable Characters! (Giovanni, Maxie, Archie, Cyrus, Ghetsis, Lysandre, Guzma and Piers!)
Press F to toggle Speed Up
An entirely different playthrough everytime! Since the tournament is randomized every time, and each character has a wide variety of Pokémon to choose from, everyone's playthrough will be different!
About 30/40 minutes of fun (I hope!), easily replayed at any time.

I hope you enjoy playing this game as much as I enjoyed making it!
If you find any bugs, you can report them either here or on our Discord Server!

Woo, game jam starting off strong! I did a route as Cyrus and as Piers, and I had a lot of fun!

The graphics for this came out really nicely! Every scene in the intro was really pretty, it made it fun to watch through rather than feeling like it was just to set things up! (I imagine the resource pack is going to be a pretty popular one!)

I really liked the method of team selection, too, it was fun to have all the Pokemon milling about instead of going through a list or PC box!

I also had a lot of fun with the setting- even though it was a small location just there to hold a tournament, it was still fun to go through the rooms and note all the personal touches!

And the big reveal was great! I love that fan games have the opportunity to pull from a broad cast of characters and Pokemon that could be behind something, so the player could hypothetically figure it out just by speculating! (My guess was completely off, though, lol)

(Also I appreciate being able to forget HMs, I was worried I'd get locked into Waterfall on Gyarados lol)

Graphics
In the intro cutscene, Brandon approaches from the left in both universes, even though Sapphire seems to be a mirror image of Ruby.

I dunno what went into making the split-screen effect, though, so I'd imagine there's something else at play making this a problem.

Moves that target the user seem to have their origin point off:
1612946723288.png

Battle/Movepool/Etc
  • Even though Toxtricity can learn Toxic and Venoshock via level up, it can't learn them via TM. I think that's because
  • Pokemon weren't taking damage from Hail or Sandstorm, was this intentional?
  • A few Pokemon had really weak moves when I faced them. Giovanni's Nidoqueen used Scratch, Lysandre's Chandelure used Ember, and (spoiler)'s Raichu used Tail Whip.
  • Sometimes the AI doesn't seem especially bright, either. I sent out Probopass against P-Kyogre when fighting Archie, and he kept using Ice Beam, even though he had Muddy Water. (spoiler)'s Slowbro went through like, five turns of status moves before using Psychic on my Crobat, and his Raichu used Tail Whip before using Thunder Shock on Honckhrow.
    • These might just be intentional, so battles aren't insanely hard, but I figured I'd mention them just in case.
  • Dialga didn't know Roar of Time when I caught it, which was a shame. It didn't make things noticeably harder, but I was hoping for that whole "every unique legendary power!" experience.
  • In the round three battle, Archie was able to use Mega Sharpedo and Primal Kyogre, and I imagine Maxie gets the same, which I know is possible, but feels a little unfair when other 'mons only get their sig item at most. (And sometimes not even that, like with G-Moltres, although maybe the sig move was intended to make up for that- I noticed Kyogre didn't have Origin Pulse)

Bugs
Piers was blocked off in his room by the trash can and tree, was that intentional?

I switched Dialga with my Houndoom, and Dialga was holding a Houndoomite when I got back to the building.

While Maxie is wandering his room, he can end up blocking the door. (He steps away from it pretty quickly, though)

Various
Gyarados and Houndoom's cries sounded a little odd- might just be me, though.

I think it'd be nice to have the option to put a Pokemon back in the room, so the player could check their ability and moves before deciding to put them on their team

Piers' losing dialogue as the player suggests that he's treating this with the same kind of determination the other leaders are, which struck me as odd because it didn't seem like the sort of life-motivating goal like it was for the others. I haven't played all the way through SwSh, though, so that might just be my interpretation!

Punk Rock's description is too long for the summary screen:
1612946760323.png

I'm pretty sure there should be a comma after "organization" in the Galactic file:

Wow, that's a lot of detailed feedback! Thank you very much, and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the game!
I'll try to answer everything, but forgive me if something escapes 😅
Thank you very much for all the praise! :) I'm very glad you enjoyed the intro and the graphics, a lot of effort went into editing and creating the tiles for the intro cutscene!
(Also, I'm just curious, who were you thinking was the surprise villain in the end? 👀)

In the intro cutscene, Brandon approaches from the left in both universes, even though Sapphire seems to be a mirror image of Ruby.
- It may seem that Sapphire's is a mirror, but the cave layout is actually the same! Maybe it looks mirrored because Sapphire's camera is a bit more to the right? 🤔
Moves that target the user seem to have their origin point off
- That is something I noticed while playtesting, I tried to fix it but in the end I couldn't find out how to. It's definitely something that, post-jam, I'll ask for help on how to fix!
Even though Toxtricity can learn Toxic and Venoshock via level up, it can't learn them via TM. I think that's because
- Uhm, is there something missing at the end of your phrase? 😅
Pokemon weren't taking damage from Hail or Sandstorm, was this intentional?
- Nope! Will have to look into getting that fixed!

- About the rest of the battle critique: only the signature mons of each boss had a set moveset, but I'm gonna be changing that post-jam (every mon will have a set moveset, to balance it more), because yeah, I don't want Nidoqueen using Scratch and Tail Whip haha.
Piers was blocked off in his room by the trash can and tree, was that intentional?
- Yeah, he doesn't want to talk to the other villains :P
I think it'd be nice to have the option to put a Pokemon back in the room, so the player could check their ability and moves before deciding to put them on their team
- Hm yeah, I'll think about that, that's definitely a good idea!
Piers' losing dialogue as the player suggests that he's treating this with the same kind of determination the other leaders are, which struck me as odd because it didn't seem like the sort of life-motivating goal like it was for the others. I haven't played all the way through SwSh, though, so that might just be my interpretation!
- Oh no, you're definitely right! When I altered the "he scurried back home, protecting his pokemon bla bla bla" text I completely forgot about Piers! I'll have to change that to something else when I can, so thanks!

- As for the rest of the bugs I haven't mentioned, they will be fixed as well!
Again, thank you very much for the detailed feedback and for playing the game! Much appreciated 😁

(Also, I'm just curious, who were you thinking was the surprise villain in the end? 👀)
I was honestly expecting an admin of Rainbow Rocket or something similar! For my runthrough, my first opponent was Giovanni, so I was kind of expecting a reveal that they took down their leader or something!
- It may seem that Sapphire's is a mirror, but the cave layout is actually the same! Maybe it looks mirrored because Sapphire's camera is a bit more to the right? 🤔
Ohh, yeah, I see it now! I'm not as familiar with the map, lol.
- That is something I noticed while playtesting, I tried to fix it but in the end I couldn't find out how to. It's definitely something that, post-jam, I'll ask for help on how to fix!
Move animations sound like a nightmare to handle lmao, I was just seeing a discussion on reddit about getting moves like Flamethrower to line up with a Pokemon's mouth for different heights. Hope it's an easy fix!

- Uhm, is there something missing at the end of your phrase? 😅
Lol I knew I was forgetting something

What I meant to say is that I think it's because Toxic and Venoshock aren't TMs in SwSh! So any PBS resource out there is probably just pulling from the Pokemon's TM list and not checking for any old TMs that can be learned by level up!
- Yeah, he doesn't want to talk to the other villains :P
Hehe, nice
- About the rest of the battle critique: only the signature mons of each boss had a set moveset, but I'm gonna be changing that post-jam (every mon will have a set moveset, to balance it more), because yeah, I don't want Nidoqueen using Scratch and Tail Whip haha.
Ooh, exciting! I'll save my other playthroughs for the new movesets, then!
- Oh no, you're definitely right! When I altered the "he scurried back home, protecting his pokemon bla bla bla" text I completely forgot about Piers! I'll have to change that to something else when I can, so thanks!
No problem! It honestly didn't seem too out of place, since he clearly cares about preventing people from causing harm, but it was odd in the moment lol.

I download file and it don't want to open. Help please!
Can you be more specific, please? The download should be a .rar file, so you need a program like WinRAR to extract its contents. After you've extracted the files, just double click on "Game.exe" and the game will start.

Just finished my first playthrough as Cyrus but I can see myself going again as Piers!

What a fantastic game, a lot of my points are the same as tech's, but that intro was amazing. It felt so cool.
Here are my thoughts, spoiler warning although I don't think it is too spoilery
As I said, that intro was amazing and really got me excited. All the eventing in the cutscenes were smooth as butter. In general the detail and polish was great, flavour text was good, small details were nice. Just a pretty clean experience. Apart from the battle bugs that Tech mentioned like weather and strange animations, I only experienced 1 bug and I've already sent that to you. Other nice touches were things like being able to use megas, having TMs to play around with, and the balancing being pretty solid.

I honestly don't really have anything bad to say, and tech has mentioned all the small things already. I just really enjoyed this game. Thank you so much for making it!

A lot of effort went into the intro cutscenes so I'm glad everyone seems to like it!

I played Pokemon Villain Jam. I enjoyed playing the game.

I played as Lysandre and it's a nice game whenever you feel like playing it, you can. I enjoy the cutscenes like everyone else said, you can tell you put a lot of effort into it. I really enjoyed your game and good job on making it this quickly.

Update: I'm uploading a new version, which only has the following fixes:
  • Fixed a rare crash when using the vending machines;
  • Fixed a typo in the intro;
  • Fixed Punk Rock's ability description being too long;
  • Fixed a bug where caught Legendary Pokémon still held on to items from the Pokémon they replaced;
  • Gave fixed movesets to the villains' Pokémon;
  • Hail and Sandstorm now cause damage;
  • Fixed a few Gen. 8 Pokémon's TM learn list.
Download: http://www.mediafire.com/file/swalj9kknexoovc/Pokémon+Villain+Jam.rar/file
(As a sidenote, I'm keeping the old version's download, just in case the judges decide they'd rather play that version of the game.)

That could possibly be your antivirus not letting the game run. Try disabling your antivirus for the game's folder.
