[Developer Thoughts]
A Farfetch'd Story is my third Pokémon (jam) fangame. After making two jam games set in Hoenn, I decided to try something different! I always loved the vibes of PMD games, and I wanted to create a cute little story about some fun Pokémon. I also tried some script editing this time, and I've learned a lot! Honestly, I like this game a bit more than Littleroot Researchers because I had a ton of fun making this. I hope you enjoy the game!😊

This game was created for Relic Castle's Winter Game Jam #3!

Just finished the game! Here are my thoughts!
I love this game so much! You did a great job, Kenny! The graphics and music fit the game so well. It was nice playing a PMD-type game! It had some funny parts and really difficult fights, like the Dragonite one, the Volcanion/Heatran one, and ofc the Weather Trio finals boss (i didn't lose in any of them surprisingly lol!) I liked the story a lot too, so you get a smiley face =D!

As for bugs, there were just a couple, so here they are!
1. passibility error, could walk up the rocks

2. passibility error, could walk on tables in the houses

3. passability error, could walk here lol

4. Soft locked here, not sure what happened honestly

5. Soft locked here as well, rocky jumped from like a weird angle and jumped up onto that cliff

It was a fantastic experience, great work!

I had a really great time with this entry! My thoughts are all below!

The tracks for the game were well-selected! They hit all of the right story moods. As we previously discussed, I also love the little "bonk" noise made when a plank is laid down. It's just too cute.

Tiles
Now... I might be... A little biased about the tiles. Just a little. I won't say much about that. There are a few areas where I think some simple edits could have been made to the tilesets to make them fit better. (The wooden counters in the shop, the side cave entrances in the Cramorant area, etc.) It also would have been nice to see some more Pokémon-specific objects. (Nests, dog bones, perches, etc.) Guess I need to start making some.

Mapping
The mapping was done well! I liked the unique variety of areas we got to explore, and was grateful for a town map. I liked how there were little branches and nooks to the routes. It was always rewarding to explore. I wish there were a few more chances to go back and use the abilities of some of the later characters. But, I'll talk about that more in the gameplay section.

Portraits
The portraits... My gosh were they all just so adorable. You used the portraits really well with the writing! I also like how you made your own little edits to them to fit a particular scene. (Rocky having the Hard Stone on his head, that glorious smug face Trubbish makes, etc.) They were all great, and brought so much personality to the world. The little pop-up with each character's profile as they joined the team was also a great addition. It was an extra step that enhanced the feeling of being a team.

Misc
List of things that are great/make me happy to see:
  • Custom UI and dialogue boxes
  • Animated title screen
  • That scrolling panorama trick in the beginning was a clever, dynamic cutscene
I wish the game had custom or at least different from the default battle backgrounds. But, it's not the end of the world.

Puzzles & Switching
The switch mechanic was great! I had lots of fun with it! Things were handled quick and to the point. You really created some interesting puzzles with the little mechanics you introduced for each character. You also created new twists on old, classic Pokémon-type puzzles, like the boulders. In addition, you did the same with the ice slide puzzles. I love ice puzzles, they're criminally underused. So, I was excited to see how you handled them here!

Overall, I felt that the puzzles were a fair difficulty. I wasn't stuck on any of them for too long, and they were pretty forgiving. That maze did have me sweating down to the last second, though!

I just have two nitpicks: First, once more characters became involved, it would have been nice to bind each one to a separate keyboard key to save the scrolling. Having 6, though, I don't know what the best combination of buttons would be. Just a throwaway thought.

Next, I wish there were more puzzles, and different combinations of each character's skills. It would have been nice if there was a greater sense of building on what you had already learned. It also would have been cool if we could go back to previous areas with our new skills. I understand it probably wasn't the first thought to come to mind what with the time restraints of the jam, though.

Battles
The battles were fine for the most part. I didn't have much trouble with the overworld Pokémon. I was never stuck on the bosses too long before I could move on along. I think the most difficult of the bunch was the Garbodor battle. But, like I talked about in the server, I just had a fun time cheezing it with Leech Seed & Substitute. Depending on people's dairy tolerance levels, they might find this cheese more or less acceptable.

There were a good number of held items, TMs, healing items, and healing spots. I always felt just as I was ready to go back and heal, the next spot would be available to me. They were spread out well. Shelby's healing power was also a neat addition!

Misc
We already discussed most of the miscellaneous points. The only other thing I'd add is that the game plays very well! I only encountered the one major bug with the stairs. Everything else leaned more towards the cosmetic side.

Dialogue
The dialogue in this game is absolutely dripping with charm, and I adore it. Every character, down to the most insignificant NPC, had something memorable to say. The game just has this awesome mixture of cute, heartwarming, and wacky. Like we discussed, the goofy Rocky & Karl were my two favourite characters. However, they wouldn't have shone nearly as much if they didn't have the serious demeanors of the rest of the main party for them to bounce off. My only nitpick is I noticed a few grammar errors - mostly missing commas. But, Isortofdidn'twanttointerruptmygameplaytotakescreenshotsofeverythingIcameacrossbecauseIwasenjoyingitthatmuch.

Characters

The early cast members up to Shelby were fleshed out great! All of the first three had their own interesting arcs, despite the game's shorter length. I liked how Farley warmed up to the group and their shenanigans. I liked how Rocky, despite his worldview being challenged, still managed to pull through with optimism. Even though the other characters don't directly comment on it, I can also appreciate that Shelby, despite not having her Gracidia, is still a very effective and compelling leader. She does a great job at keeping the group together. In addition, despite her being a bit of a "leader" character, I like how she doesn't have to take the spotlight.

This sort of pulls away from character development, but, writing about Shelby did make me realize something else. The group, even with all its distinct personalities, doesn't let one character hog the spotlight. There is no one focus on a special character's strength or power that helps defeat the big bads. The characters are not just supporting you, the player, but each other. You get a refreshing sense that it is teamwork that helps you win at the end of the day. I just think it's neat, and not something you typically see in a Pokémon narrative.

That being said, and we did talk about this as well, I wish we got more time to explore the later three party members. I can understand why that wasn't viable with time constraints, though. I have no doubt they would have been just as excellent as the main three!

Themes
Betrayal - You know what? I should have remembered the themes part of the thread. I should have seen it coming from the moment I read the "temporarily." But, I wanted to believe so badly. ;-; (Do wish we had a few more lines from our traitor character, though.)

Father Figure - Yup. He's a father figure alright. I don't have anything to add here that isn't already mentioned in my characters section.

The World
This partially falls under the mapping/tiles section. But, again, I liked the distinct areas of the region. I thought it was a fun set-up for the plot. In terms of the world from a writing standpoint, though, I did find some of the human-made objects/references you wouldn't expect to see a bit strange. Humans are referenced, and therefore exist in this world... But... Not in this region? Did they build all the human structures? Did a human leave a Switch? Were they beamed away by aliens, leaving all the Pokémon behind? It's not the world's biggest deal, but, I did find it a bit jarring to the immersion at times. I'm sure the length of this comment already demonstrates clearly enough that I think too much, though.

The Ending
I wish we could have dwelt more on the implications of Farley staying with the group, as well as seen the consequences of the Weather Trio going on their way. That doesn't mean the ending was bad - it was actually quite a nice feel-good wrap up! It's like the characters, I just wanted a line or two more to explore those ideas/world developments.

Overall
To sum up, I had a really fun time with this game! It is chock-full of charm and awesome details. The gameplay and writing are excellent, and work well with the Pokémon style! My only major complaints are that I wanted more- more puzzles, more character interactions, etc. I guess, technically, that's a good thing. I enjoyed the game so much that I didn't want it to be done. Don't mistake me being greedy for the game feeling incomplete, though. It's amazing that you got another complete jam entry out, and there is a lot of high quality content here! Excellent job, Kenny!

Wow! I really, really loved playing a Farfetch'd Story! This is easily in my top 3 fan games! Here are my thoughts:
My favorite parts of this game were easily the thoroughly tested balancing and the writing! The writing was bubbling with charm, and the twists and the turns were executed flawlessly. My only critique would be the lack of dialogue near the end for one of the characters. They truly seemed to unnaturally fade into the background when they were formerly extremely talkative. The balancing, however, was FLAWLESS. Even without grinding, a Farfetch'd Story managed to be a really challenging game, in the boss fights, and sometimes, the trainer battles! Every party member was well chosen, and they all added something valuable to the team though the first two characters really carried the boss fights.

The mapping and graphics, though generally simple, had few errors and provided the immersion necessary. All the public tiles used were excellently chosen, and only a few PMD portraits felt out of place (mainly Trubbish), though understandable, as this is a solo project. The mapping was well done too, and there were very few tile errors.

This is much less important than the meat and potatoes of the game, but the optimization has really improved between this game and littleroot researchers!
TLDR: Excellent game with extremely well-done and entertaining battles. Writing is very charming and has you wondering what's next. Graphics are generally simple, but work well for the game, and the public tiles used are utilized well. If you're worried about lag, or have experienced lag with other 19.1 games, this game does not have those issues.

Ahhh, thank you so so much for writing such a long review! I loved reading this!!!
  • I really appreciate the things you talked about in the characters section! I tried to emphasize the whole 'teamwork' idea for this game, and I'm glad you sensed that! I'm also happy to hear that you liked the first three characters arcs, and yeah, the last three, unfortunately, didn't get too much development.
  • I wanted to make custom battle back for some areas, but I got too lazy. 😢
  • Good point about the human stuff! Let's say, uh...yup...they were definitely beamed away by aliens.

Thank you, Samdeman, for the feedback and criticism! I'm happy to hear that the balancing was spot on, it makes my hours of playtesting worth it! Thanks again for playing, and I enjoyed watching you play my game in the discord!

Hey KennyCatches, I just beat your game and loved it!

I did find a little bit of very minor bugs in some places
there was funny collision for the tent and other places but everyone else pointed those out
funny tent.png

I also noticed that I couldn't use the heal ability with Farley and Rock (which was intentional I think), but I could use it with Shelby as well as every other character after Shelby.

There was also a complete save file already when I first played. When I loaded it I was in the post credits scene. Idk if this happened to anyone else or if it was intentional.

I also have some feedback about the game!
It took me 3 hours and 21 mins to beat and I had fun the whole time! My favorite part has to be the characters with their different personalities and how they interact with each other (my favorites are probably Karl and Farley). I like how the whole party was a part of the overworld gameplay too. All the puzzles and special abilities were awesome! The battles where really fun and had lot's of variety. I like how it feels like every battle there is new pokemon. The mix's of single, double, and triple battles also spiced things up. All of the battles felt perfectly balanced too. The maps, graphics, bgm, and cool lighting/fog effects added a lot of charm and atmosphere. The ending was really sweet too!

Thanks for playing and the bug reports! I have fixed two of those, but I'll look into the Shelby one. Your feedback is much appreciated!

Kenny suprised us again with a nice and thoughtful game.
I really liked the whole concept of the game. The used tileset is nice and every zone is unique. My favorite was the very first zone, the after-storm look was beutiful.
Every character was shaped with its own personality - protagonists and antagonists. The dialogues were interesting, funny, but also serious. The portraits made everything even better.
The fights were balanced and the healing spots perfectly positioned.
While I am not big fan of the puzzles in games, the new overworld game mechanics made them interesting even for me.
TLDR: A nice little story with interesting fights and charming writing. This is without doubt one of my favorite games.

Just finished the game and have got to say, it was absolutely stunning, loved the idea and story of the game. Every character felt real and the gameplay mechanics felt good to play with.

Graphics were great, though there were some pixel density inconsistancies in fogs, 1 character and some overworld sprite allignments, they did not take away from the great visual style of the game.

The music is definitely one of my highlights for this game, loved the songs that were used.

But by far the best aspect of the game has to be the characters, they were all amazingly written and all felt super real, great job.

Now of course every game has their bugs so here's a small list of bugs I encountered:
Don't have a screenshot of it, but I noticed my save screen said Chapter 3 before I actually started Chapter 3.

I remember there being a sign early on mentioning that everyone gains a new move every 5 levels, though I didn't get a new move for Zephyr or Shelby at level 40 and level 55 respectively.

Something I noticed later on in the game is that all party members that come after Shelby can use her ability, I assume it's just a 'Current character > Rocky' check instead of a 'Current character == Shelby' check.

The pixel in the middle of the P is a different color and it kinda annoyed me during battles.

I took screenshots throughout the game for tile errors, though they seem to have overwritten themselves, only saving as 1 picture named as if they were all taken at the same time in the same map, but it came down to a plant that you could walk on in the first town and a closet you could fully walk on in the first town.

Also berries being just 20 was kind of broken, especially when you can sell the protein for 4800.

After going through this part of the summit you can't go back so I missed out on that item.

Still a great game, the bugs didn't bother me at all.

Thank you @rhaidor and @Voltseon for the kind words and bug reports!!!

Version 1.3 is out! More bugfixes. The game should be pretty stable now!
Fixed tile errors
Fixed passability errors
Grass is set to 2 for terrain tags
Fixed Shelby healing mechanic
Fixed that one pixel on the hp bar UI
Episode 3 now updates correctly in the save menu
Lowered selling price of protein from 9800 to 980
Fixed movesets

Just finished this game.
Wow. Absolutely wow. The maps are incredible, the story is breathtaking (although feels kind of unfinished because
What happened to another Farfetch'd? From the prologue? After the credits you're just kinda stuck to the chair....
).
The small interactions between minor NPCs are sometimes actually funny/charming.
The battles feel a little bit more fair then in Littleroot researchers and the heal spot placements is a lot less annoying, so that's a plus. Although they are tough even with the Exp.All, especially
against the four Gatekeepers
I kind of waited for
Rocky and Bree to evolve for the ultimate battle
, but that is very much a matter of taste.
Overall - great job!

Hihi! I played your game and I figured I'd share some thoughts about it.

It's such a sweet, comforting and wholesome game! You really do have a knack for these kinds of games, don't you? (I see the cameos from Littleroot Researchers and The Rising Sun!) I love the Farley gang, their personalities, and their little interactions and banter with one another. I love their growth, both individually and as a team; I love how their bond deepens as they travel together and how everyone has found friends they know they can trust and rely on. Not just friends... but at the end of it all, they feel like a family to me. With Zephyr and Shelby as the parents, Karl and Farley as the cool uncles and Rocky and Bree as the kids haha ^^ It's one of those journeys which you don't want to see end, because you've grown to love this ragtag team so much and you want to continue seeing them go on many more adventures together... does that make sense?

I think a huge part of this is due to the new overworld mechanics you've implemented - the fact that every member has a part to play to clear the field and move on to the next stage. (Yes, even Zephyr looking cool is important ^^). That and the fact that many battles are Doubles and Triples really solidifies the notion of "teamwork" and "building camaraderie". The appropriately difficult boss battles (with the appropriately cool VS banners with the whole team gathered!) really makes me feel that nothing is impossible to overcome when everyone's united! I also have to mention just how creative the puzzles are - the rocks which you turn on and off for the ice puzzle and the last strength puzzle where you combine Rocky + Farley + Karl's powers are simple additions to the classic Pokémon puzzles, but they add so much more uniqueness and fun.

Some bugs

floette.png

Not just her type... people mistake her species too! (That's a Floette, not a Flabébé)

Trent.png

Trent the Trubbish's stats does not match his summary (Male, Stench, etc). PS: That face is going to haunt my nightmares for a long time to come.

It's only 3+ hours of playtime, but I've grown so attached to Farley and his gang. Thank you so much for creating such a fun and enjoyable game!

Wow what a game!
I don't really have anything bad to say, this was just a really good, complete, fun, polished, touching, charming experience! I mean every one of those adjectives!

I loved the characters! From cute Rocky to poor Karl and his tragic romance story. Seriously Karl was funny. The game just had so much nice charming dialogue and whatnot. I also really liked the bit with the artist, and the lotad (kenny) giving Karl some shades.

The gameplay was kept interesting, fairly balanced battles. Focusing around double and triple battles was a lot of fun and quite refreshing. Getting moves every 5 levels felt fun and always kept me in anticipation. And the puzzles to break up the battling with cool mechanics, aaa just very well done.

Just yeah, I wish I had more to say so I could properly express how good of an experience this was but I can't really find the words sadly. And there isn't anything for me to complain about so I think that's all. Just once again, I really enjoyed it. The game felt super clean and polished. I hope you are proud of this game, you deserve to be.

Loving the game. Exactly what I've been looking for. 10/10.
However, I have come to Chapter 3 and seem to be stuck. My apologies for using the above picture as I could not get my own to work. I am on the side that the circle is on but cannot figure out how to get over. If it helps, there in a Houndoom where this Farfetch'd below is. I may just not be seeing something obvious but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to continue.

Hey, thanks for playing. You need to push a boulder onto the switch.
