If a battle doesn't go in your favour, or the journey is just too harsh, the Nurse Joys and their strange machine are there to make sure the game goes on unhindered. Being able to take a Pokemon from battered and bruised to stable seems like magic. Still, it's a magic that no-one really questions.
But even magic had to be invented at some point. Some people in the Pokemon world today were alive when the machine didn't exist.

...And some nurse Joy, right at the bottom of the Pokemon world, had to be the last to get it.

The year is 198X. A team of top-class scientists (and one nurse) from across the globe are anxiously waiting for the storm to end. They're one of the few to work in Antaxius 'overwinter' - it's the last region to be discovered by man, an icy waste where the nights are a month long. Once the weather finally clears, an icebreaker ship can make it to the mainland and deliver valuable equipment. Among the cargo is the Re:Vive - a machine that promises to magically heal any Pokemon, and any ailment.

Resident nurse Aida has been working here for 20 years, and out of all the miracle cures she's seen, this one could be for real. She knows it'll change the field of Pokemon care forever, and possibly the rest of the world. No more panic, no more stress, no more death, even.
But how will she spend the last week before that change happens, knowing things can't and shouldn't go back?

The Last Nurse Joy won't have traditional Pokemon gameplay (mostly) - instead, it's more of a slow-paced puzzle game. Each patient will have an ailment that needs to be treated - but unlike vets in our world, a Nurse Joy has to deal with over eight hundred different kinds of pets.
Most of the puzzle lies in finding out what the issue is, or getting a finicky patient to co-operate with you!

~Take your patient's temperature, measure their heartbeat, or even X-Ray them at the blue observation desk.
~Have a look at their anatomy, or find out if Ice-Types can catch a cold at the green diagnosis bookshelf.
~Pick up everything you'll need to treat, feed, or comfort your patient at the red treatment table!
~If you're completely stuck, try the hint chair.
~You can get a lot out of just observing your Pokemon, and more importantly - you can pet all of them.
Once that's done, talk to Chansey to lock in your treatment, and see if your judgement was right...

Depending on how well you've done your job, you can get a Bronze, Silver, or a Gold ranking. There are 6 cases total in the game (with bonus cases potentially being added in the future once the judging is done. I'll keep you updated on that.) How many extra steps you took to make sure the Pokemon was happy, if you even succeeded in treating the Pokemon; all of that determines your rank, and...eventually, the ending you get.

Oh - and digging a little deeper into the where, why, and how of your patient's injury could lead to something special, but you'll have to find that yourself.

Note: this game depicts animal injury and distress in a semi-realistic way.

Firstly...
I'll put a Content Warning for some blood, cuts, bruising, injury on cases 1&6. It's nothing gory, but if you don't want to see that, I totally understand.
Secondly...

These two jams were edited to become...
Saline Solution, and a Painkiller!

This feather became the Distracting Toy!

With a bit of Gen 4 restyling, and recolouring to fit the red, green, blue and white of the nurse's office...
This table became the Operating Table - the center of every case!

This game table was placed in both the lounge, and the locker room. Even scientists play card games.

Thirdly...
If you want to talk more about this game, then you can join a (temporary) Discord server dedicated to it. It's a tiny bit barren at the moment since I kind of forgot to maintain it amongst all the stress of the jam game, but here's the invite anyway. If you want to contact me personally - if there's any issues with crediting, if I need to include anything else on this thread, then feel free to reply, and we can continue our conversation in Discord DMs.

Lastly...
This is my first time being a lead dev as opposed to a lead spriter, and while there were a lot of growing pains involved and a lot of mistakes I undoubtedly made, I'm still immensely happy that I could put out a complete story, and thankful for everyone that helped make this happen.
I hope the Last Nurse Joy...brings you joy?

after one whole week (okay, playing it didn't take that long, i took several days off), i've finally finished my second playthrough and got the true ending, so i feel about ready to drop my review in here!

this is going to be VERY VERY LENGTHY, but much of it involves me partially ""liveblogging"" my second playthrough of the game, primarily so that i can log every step (or ALMOST every step) that i take in poking at various bugs/quirks/etc more accurately, so hopefully that'll help y'all pinpoint the issues a little better? it's also an attempt to keep all the issues organized into a... semi-chronological order, at least in terms of the game's events rather than my own experiences playing it

also, note that much of this was written when i was far too tired to make much sense (and perfectly well rested i very rarely manage to be coherent), so please forgive any ambiguity/strange wording. if anything is excessively confusing i'll do my best to clarify ^_^

personal experiences with the game & my thoughts/feelings
  • firstly i should mention where i found out about this game: pikasprey! from scrolling through the comments on his video i know that at least two of the people working on this knew of him already, so i don't have to go telling you guys how much i enjoy his stuff, but i'll say that the MOMENT i heard him say it was a puzzle-type game and saw him starting to work on skitty i had to immediately pause the video and rush to my computer to go download this and play it for myself first. i was actually supposed to be winding down to sleep and i was just Overcome with the need
  • this game fucks and i've already told my friends to try it out too
  • will be checking out the other games on this site too!
  • very very very excited at the prospect of more cases. i actually have some questions about that but i'll save those for later
  • honestly i'm not sure i could say much more that other people haven't said. i love "sidegames" that explore pokeprofessions other than being a trainer, i love worldbuilding, i love all things Niche, and i am and always will be a fan of listening to/reading other people talk about topics they're clearly passionate about while i have no prior knowledge of any of it. this game is directly analogous to any jenny nicholson video essay on the failings of star wars: i have never seen star wars and all i know about it is nyeow nyeow krrssh nyeow luke i am your father, and i have no medical knowledge beyond the forensic type that i need to solve murder mysteries, and i will still sit here and consume all of it gladly
  • likewise any other games produced by this group i WILL eat up like i've been starving for 3 days. trust has been established. you have fed me enough treats i'll follow you around now

okay. now for my collection of problems. warning: i do not speak like a normal human and these are going to be very wordy. i also don't know how to truncate these while also making myself as clear as possible. bear with me

WHO FORGOT THE LID ON THE SUGAR POT THERE'S DURANT EVERYWHERE
  • you know that bit where the wheat bag moves and aida chases after it? yeah so. i have successfully (or... unsuccessfully, depending on your definition) activated that during both the pikachu case and the very very very beginning of the ditto case (when aida is just sitting in the lounge), and... each time i activate it, the screen just... blacks out? i can still hear the music and i actually managed to escape the blackout (twice, so this is repeatable) by holding down long enough that i enter the garden directly across from the lounge, so it seems the game is technically functional, i'm just Blind Now I Guess. upon regaining my vision and returning to the lounge, the wheat bag is right back where it was before
  • this continued to occur during the rest of the ditto case, each time resulting in a black screen. i've tried saving, closing the game and rebooting, and i still return to a black screen; i even did this when i suspect i was SUPPOSED to (during the poke-interrogation section where i'm supposed to pick out which of them is acting suspicious, the wheatbag actually DID move during this part which is reinforcing my belief since all other times it was actually perfectly still and interacting with it had aida just TELL me that it was apparently moving around, plus i finally got new dialogue), and i still got a blackout (and then had to fumble my way along the wall to find a single entry point to any room so i could get my visibility back, which thankfully continued to work)
  • and now i've got the perfect, ditto left the room, and i sit here next to the wheatbag that still has not left. i am returning to this bullet again at the end of the game and that accursed wheatbag is still in the lounge it's EXACTLY like what happened with garcia in my first run but that's a few bullets down from here
  • right so someone else brought up this bug already BUT i thought i would add my own (basically liveblogged) experience here just for the sake of extra info. all signs point to this being caused exclusively by using the cone of shame. my sort of glitch-liveblog is as follows:
  • during the zweilous case, i finished cone of shaming, blanketing and heatpacking the zweilous, did a blood test, then went to go get scarlett. i told her i took a blood test, i told her it had anemia, and then said i'd go get some vitamins... and then suddenly i was back outside calling for scarlett again, and then we went inside... and suddenly i was in full control of aida's movements. and by full control i mean i could now walk through walls. like, this was a STARTLING amount of control, actually. as i type this i am standing in the void above a window.
  • ... and surprisingly, i've just discovered i can still interact with my environment and successfully prescribed iron tablets to zweilous? not quite as game-breaking as i'd thought, but... strange, for sure. additional news: i had to soft reset again as i've still managed to skirt completely around the perfect rating again, and discovered this was not a one-off glitch: i am once again repeating the "bring scarlett into the room" cutscene and i am once again walking right on through everyone and everything. behold: zweilous hat
Screenshot_477.png

  • i've done my (hopefully last) soft reset just now, this time i've given it additional pets and fed it another hot vanilla before finalizing my diagnosis, so its energy is now higher; the bar is almost full, i believe. ... aaaaaaand it's still looping! i'm still capable of interacting with objects while simultaneously able to walk right through 'em, so if anything, this is more convenient for walking around, i suppose... also, this time i talked to scarlett before heading to the cabinet; this did not fix anything, i'm still intangible
  • on my first run, after the ditto case, garcia (in his snow gear) stayed standing outside next to the port saying "quickly!" for... the entire rest of the game, for some reason. i don't know what caused this and it didn't stick around when i replayed the game and got 100% perfect, that's all i know- that and my previous run only had perfects on skitty, gothitelle, and chansey, if that helps any
Screenshot_466.png

  • during the last case, if i talk to chansey while in the under-renovation waiting room and she runs out of the room, i can then enter the area behind the door, right? i went ahead and entered, and then i exited, and... the waiting room was now... back to the original, smaller one. i exited the pokemon center and went back in and it was under renovation again, so no harm done, but JEEZ did that scare me i hadn't saved in a bit
  • ... ah. i failed to save after this happened, proceeded to try and poke Floating Unknown Creature of Kháos (this is rather wordy so i'll just use its acronym form FUCK from here on. for the sake of brevity of course. and clarity. obviously) and this resulted in Eternal Poking for this poor FUCK that i could not exit out of through any button-pressing. i was able to successfully poke the FUCK during my first run, i'll see if i can poke it successfully now that i've done some other stuff first... aha! poke successful! i'm not sure why me having taken its temperature/checked its blood pressure/gotten a blood sample/drawn it has now unlocked pokability, but... apparently ONE of those fixes it, at least?
  • i once again find myself trying to get that accursed zweilous to join my team, and to no avail: i return to the freezer in the lounge, i select an item in the hopes it'll go in my inventory so i can feed it to zweilous and bribe it to fight for me, and instead of going in my inventory, it goes nowhere (except presumably aida's stomach. even the ice heals. i don't think you should be eating those, aida). i'm blocked off from the fridge in the pokemon center since little miss eldritch abomination has no mouth at the moment, and i apparently can't steal any of that food clementine left out, so zweilous remains out of my grasp
  • oh jeez okay this one is out of order but i just saw another comment on the thread and... i have never once had gothitelle ask me to fix a rug for pikachu? not a single time. it's just jumped right into asking aida to get her stuff from the locker room, i was WONDERING why i had the option to ask it if it was worried for PIKACHU of all peo... people...? pokemon??? whatever, that and why she introduced the vision of the locker room with "let's try this again"; i figured she just meant the dream she gave aida earlier
  • and finally: just a few Weird Graphics
Screenshot_480.png

Screenshot_482.png

to be fair: i did NOT notice the flipped shadow on my first run

general nitpicks that have to do with how the game functions
  • new game button being above the continue button on the main menu makes soft resetting a little trickier to do, since if i forget to adjust first i gotta close the game and open it back up again
  • dialogue very easy to accidentally repeat, this was by far the biggest issue; a good fix would be a "skip" button for text already read. maybe a toggle in the options menu for whether you want to be able to skip ALL text (including unread text) as well if you're doing a second run? (that is, if this is even possible to implement, LOL)
  • related to that, it's also easy to hit dialogue options i absolutely did not mean to hit! the amount of times i've accidentally diagnosed pikachu with a cold or zweilous with an autoimmune disorder... well, not that many, but i have to soft reset every time it happens, and while i was struggling to figure out how to get my perfect treatments it was pretty annoying ruining my progress by hitting a button too fast (especially since i tended to save BEFORE doing certain things to package them all neatly into one attempt)
  • multiple saves would be nice for the same reason, since having to do the whole game over again (and abandoning my old save file! made me kinda sad to overwrite it...) to get each ending can be a bit tedious. i WANT to see all the different ways things can play out, but having to redo the same conversations over and over (and aforementioned text issues getting very much in the way of making progress quickly) makes it difficult to get motivated, and that SUCKS cause this game RULES and i want to EAT IT ALL
  • tissue hitbox how i loathe thee, i spent a good while TRYING to interact with it and failing because i wasn't aware i could ONLY approach it from behind the counter
  • i was unaware during the zweilous section that i was coming up with an IMMEDIATE solution to warm up zweilous and was thus afraid to actually start the treatment process, because... i thought i wasn't done yet, lol. i ran around aimlessly hoping to figure out what to actually do and it took me a while to realize that i was completely fine to slap a blanket and some heat on that bad boy and i didn't need to have my entire diagnosis at the ready by the time i got to chansey
  • this is more of a simple typo report; aida refers to the ditto as a "rouge ditto", and dr. clementine during the final case referse to a "vauge existential dread", rather than "rogue" and "vague" respectively
  • shortly after this, garcia refers to the berry tree he's tied to as a "pot plant", which, uh... i mean, if intentional? hilarious. if not? maybe that should be potTED plant instead
  • as i'm sure has been stated before, being able to see what the vitamins and whatnot are actually useful for BEFORE adding them to the inventory would be helpful; as would some explanation on some of the fridge items, something like what types of pokemon might enjoy certain things? even if it's obvious for some like the canopy-gro, i sat there wondering for a while why on earth i could apparently feed a pokemon an empty cupcake wrapper(?)
  • i ran around quite a bit on my first run not knowing how to progress with chansey after defeating it in battle. i had sanitiz11:42 PM 14/06/2021 ... i don't know what i just clicked but i somehow inserted the time and date of me writing this bullet point....? i'm leaving it there so everyone is as perplexed as i am. anyways. i sanitized its wound, gave it a bandage, and... nothing? painkillers? nope, nothing. well how do i progress, i wondered to myself, only to discover that apparently i can only make the game move if i... bandage the wound, THEN sanitize it? or at least that's what worked at the time, but now on this second run i find myself having to bandage it, sanitize it, then sanitize it again? i, ah... well firstly, i'm admittedly not well versed in medicine, but i thought surely sanitization would come BEFORE the bandages, not afterwards

personal nitpicks (there are very few)
  • just going by canon, i found it a lil odd that fighting types are listed as the most recently discovered type and that both dark and steel were present in the elemental handbook; i can accept it at face value if you're just rearranging things a little and retconning dark and steel being "discovered" when gen 2's events occur (or if we align things with the hgss timeline rather than gsc, which presumably overwrites that discovery time), but i do have to admit i was a little disappointed to discover that the only "theoretical type" listed was fairy, lol- i wanted to see some medicalspeak worldbuilding on how dark and steel were discovered too! like, "some rock types have qualities more akin to metals, and it has been proposed that pokemon with more metallic compositions be redefined. names for this include metal type, titanium type, steel type, etc etc" and "there are certain pokemon that fall somewhere between ghost fighting and psychic that have the intelligence of a psychic type but are more (when judged from human perspective) malicious and utilize more physical tactics than psychic types tend to/are more wont to pack behaviours compared to the relatively solitary pokemon that share its clade, which usually prefer only one or two trusted companions" etc etc you get the point i think. i do like the idea of fighting type being fairly recently discovered, i just think there's room for more than fairy under the "yet to be discovered" umbrella that would also fit nicely in line with the canon timeline- presuming that gen 2 did not in fact occur yet of course
  • the other is yet another case of wanting MORE! more cases and whatnot in general of course, but also, like others, i'd love it if there was more development of aida's feelings about the re:vive, as i feel her hesitance didn't feel as... justified? as it should have. i can definitely reason in my brain why she would feel hesitant about it, but having not seen enough of her conflicted feelings in the actual game (and for not nearly long enough), it felt a little out of nowhere. same with chansey, both of them needed more time of on-screen Stewing In Their Feelings methinks; which i think could be easily solved with some more cases, and perhaps some stuff inserted between cases with more dialogue. ie, all stuff that i have no issue with knowing that the game was made very quickly and did not detract too much from my enjoyment so long as i keep that time limit in mind. also, emotional beats like the ones with gothitelle and chansey's tears did still hit me! but i'm also a major softie and anything to do with pet-adjacent creatures loving their owners WILL make me cry so i may not be the authority on how well they were built up to. i do think they turned out well regardless
  • made garcia a dilf but i'm forced to bully him to get the true end? during PRIDE MONTH????

things that other people didn't like (apparently) but i actually enjoyed greatly or at least didn't mind
  • the entire the thing/ace attorney/amogus section. that actually ruled i loved it so much and frankly i don't think anyone else has taste except me and everyone who helped write that part. i don't CARE that it came out of nowhere it was GREAT and it was a FUN MOVIE REFERENCE and REMINDED ME OF THAT SMOSH SKIT THAT WAS ALSO A PARODY OF THE THING FEATURING A DITTO and i have NOSTALGIA FOR THE EARLY 2010S and a PENCHANT FOR HORROR
  • probably also helps that i really really really like ace attorney
  • i personally did not find the amount of available items too distracting? sure i'd love if more of them were actually relevant to the cases at hand (read: i want more cases so badly you have no idea), but i didn't find myself trying to use too much that wasn't necessary, for the most part. i do however think it would perhaps be better if, say, some of the equipment was locked off for the skitty case (an easy excuse for it would be "aida hasn't unpacked it yet"), to make it more of a tutorial level where you get used to the absolute basics

and finally, my questions!
  • for future cases, would those be inserted before the re:vive gets there? would they be after the re:vive arrives and we see what nurse joy-ing is like then? are they out in the field where the re:vive is too far away to help? all of the above? just curious what to expect and whether i would need to do another playthrough from the start to see all of them
  • would we even see things from before aida ever got to antaxia, actually? i'd be interested in seeing that
  • is this all of the worldbuilding y'all have done or is there more elsewhere that i could peruse? always a huge fan of that, i've done a lot of it myself (or at least i've written a lot about singular topics, like pokeballs and how ownership is registered or how trade evolution can happen in the wild)

once again... apologies about how long this is, hopefully it's still legible. also hopefully i didn't manage to forget anything or leave a thought unfinished somewhere...

His movement's set to random, so he should move out of the way if you give him a bit! Still annoying as heck though, we'll get to fixing that!
he should but i left him alone for over an hour and he didnt move once. im wondering if cause i grabed the item if it counts as a "event"?

I found a bug that seems to happen if you both give zwelious the cone of shame and then talk to Scarlet about its underlying condition? Just after telling her what you think is the reason he always "runs cold" the game resets back to just before you invite her in to see him once you decide on treatment. The first time it happened I picked autoimmune disorder and then got stuck in the evalutation table after interacting with zwelious as if I was still treating them. The second time I picked anemia and it won't let me leave until I pick a supplement to treat the anemia but I can now walk through all tiles. It still lets you pick a supplement like normal but uh, walking through walls I assume is not intended
In trying to get a perfect score on this case I also didn't do the cone of shame, got a score of 17 which was silver rank and an extra mile. Did another run reloading the same save except gave the cone of shame, otherwise all the same answers as previous, and had the glitch happen. I ended with a score of 19 but it was bronze rank with no extra mile?

Ugh, I hope not! If you want to give me your save (C/Users/(Your name)/Saved Games/The Last Nurse Joy), I can fix it for you!
that would be awesome thanks :D i just added.txt to the end of the file so should be able to just rename it again. i think i just got super unlucky cause i taked to him while he was moving to block the door by accident and he got stuck.

I'm here to report the Zweilous case as being completely broken as well. Using the cone of shame resets the cutscene and makes you permanently be stuck on bronze. Not sure if its possible to get a perfect on this one because of this bug.

It's not a puzzle, it's supposed to just be an obstacle to make the player turn back. Another user had something similar, it seemed like it was caused by moving between the spaces too fast. If you send your save file, I can try to fix it for you.
ah that explains it, no prob though ill just replay, got the skitty part 100% complete

Not taking a tissue on the Pikachu event causes notebook updates to not show up - meaning show as blank. As in nothing at all there for the text. Same event, if your bags are full and pick up the rubber gloves they are gone forever. the tissue box lets you take more than one.

It still lets you pick a supplement like normal but uh, walking through walls I assume is not intended
yeah, getting the Zweilous bug here as described. though I saved before taking to the Chancey about the treatment.

Edit: Except I asked her about it's condition before choosing the Cone and Blanket and Heat Pack... etc

Still get bug, but tried going about it in a different way. There's an insulative blanket (red thing) right by the cones, the previous two cases doesnt tell you what it is but will use it apparently. The Zweilous case, it tells you what it is if that's the first thing you go at.

After the above didn't work and a little more poking around in the game, I looked in a graphics area. And in there is some Zweilous sprites doing something... biting on something red then going "?" above the heads. Maybe it wants us to use the item before the treatment plans but saying no on that dialog cancels everything else out.

That animation’s for the extra mile after the treatment! Your first focus in the case is just getting it warmed up!

Well it's broken currently, treated the Zweilous just leads back to calling Scarlett for the chosen treatment again.

The extra mile comes before the score screen!

EDIT: Sorry, might have misread your post - you're saying you don't know the end of the case for heating it up, or you're saying you don't know the trigger for the extra mile?
I don't get the continuation that should come after warming up the Zweilous. The game instead goes back to before the Pokemon's treatment but can walk through everything in the rooms and a bit beyond; Ah here I got video of the glitch that happens. From posts above it isn't just me this is happening to.
