The story:
TownMap.png
Winter is setting upon the Ceriama Region! The gyms are closing down for the season, and its high school trainers are gearing up for another season of the CRHS (Ceriama Regional High School) Challenge. Primum Town, a small town on the southwest coast of Ceriama, has a storied history of great trainers, but has not seen success in a number of years.

Much like Primum Town, you're down on your luck, bummed about missing another year of high school team tryouts due to not having a Pokemon of your own. But it IS your birthday today, and the first snow of the coming winter is here... Maybe something is different about today?

Pokemon: Winter Version has 10 playable chapters in its current state, the complete game + 1 DLC, with roughly 30-35 hours of gameplay included.

The Primum Town Pokemon team

Features:
  • 19 new regional Pokemon, and over 300 Pokemon from generations I, II, III, and IV.
  • GTS trading! Trade with any other player online.
  • FRLG menus and battle interfaces.
  • Speed up script, press S to toggle game speeds (normal, fast, fastest).

Starters:
Starters.png
Each starter Pokemon - Ceriaman Mudkip, Chikorita, and Charmander - comes with a new, unique ability.

Toxic Coat (Mudkip) - Boosts defense when hit by a Poison-type move.
White Heat (Chikorita) - Powers up "not very effective" Fire-type moves.
Sea Scale (Charmander) - Ups resistance to Electric-type moves.

Okay, just a suggestion: the 3D model on your title screen on the complete black with the flat cyan bar behind your name is really jarring and kinda breaks immersion. I feel like it'd look more like the generational style you're going for with something like the R/S/E title screens, or maybe with it flying like in Gold and Silver, but the 3D model just doesn't mesh with the rest of your game.

I'm really enjoying the game so far, but I encountered a bug while playing.

During my battle with Lazlo, his Slugma used Harden and the game froze and saved mid-battle. Whenever I start it up now, my game makes me walk down and to the right of where Lazlo is, and I'm unable to move at all.

Thanks for the feedback, I do agree it's a bit out of place, I think I will eventually transition to a title screen that better reflects the art style of the actual gameplay.

C:\Users\[yourUserNameHere]\Saved Games\Pokemon Winter is where your save file is, but also a file called errorlog.txt (granted, you may want to backup your save files in the future). Does this file have any contents from the crash? If so, it would really help troubleshooting. That's a super bizarre error, I've never seen an error inside of an actual battle (I haven't changed battle code at all, so it is likely just an error with Pokemon Essentials), but I'll try to replicate it.

In the meantime, if you haven't restarted the game, I can try to send you a version of the game that will teleport you back to the previous room so you can continue if you'd like that.

EDIT: I tried replicating the crash, couldn't get it to happen. Offer still stands though if you want me to try to salvage your save file.

Hey again, so I'm looking for some feedback on my chapter 2 town: Parvus Town. It's one of the oldest maps in my project, and I strongly feel like it needs an update but haven't been happy with anything so far.

The old map:

It's very square with a lot of empty space. Some places are hard to maneuver, and it can be difficult to get from point A to point B.

Here is my proposed new map:

More of a clean, standard Pokemon town with Challenger's Cave clearly separated from town. Encounters from within the town have been moved to the path of the "dig site".

Personally I think the new map is better, but I'm still looking for opinions. Thanks!

Haven't provided an update in a while, I'm getting very close to having a new beta version (with chapter 6 and more) ready. Per MagentaGiratina's comment, I decided to redo the title screen (can check it out in the main post). I've also added Ceriaman-versions of two Pokemon, Weezing (Fire/Poison) and Aggron (Dragon/Steel):

Still would love to have more play testers, feel free to PM me (or comment here) any feedback! And thanks to everyone who has played, 140 downloads of the 0.5 beta is way more than I ever expected!

Hi Magic, thanks so much for the kind words! I originally had a Shiny Stone in the first 5 chapters, but I think it got lost in the update. I'll add it back in the next version. After you complete chapter 6, the Exotic Stone Shop will have a Shiny Stone for sale in Arcanum Town also.

I'm currently playtesting chapter 6, so it is very close to being complete. If I work hard on it, it's probably 1-2 weeks away.

Fly is in the game, you need to battle Avia, Summum City's gym leader, to get it.

In one of the houses in Summum City, a man tells you where Avia's training spot is. She can be found on Summum Summit, where you fought Snorlax before.

And here are the other optional fights you might have missed:

  • After chapter 2, in Parvus Town Museum Basement
  • After chapter 3, and defeating all of the members of the Li family, in Infigo City Gym
  • After chapter 4, in Parvus Town High School

UPDATE: Version 0.6 (1.4 internally) is now available!! Thanks to everyone who downloaded the previous version, 200 downloads is a lot more than I ever would have hoped for!

(Download link)

Patch notes -
  • Introduces chapter 6, a large chapter with lots of bonus content
  • Graphical changes to maps in chapters 3 and 4
  • New region map
  • Overhauled party menu, summary screen, and battle menus to match FR/LG theme
  • New regional Pokemon variants, Aron and Koffing. Ceriaman Aron is found where normal Aron was found previously (Challenger's Cave, Summum Caverns), Koffing is owned by trainers, but is not available to capture yet
  • "Pit of 100 Trials" game mode in Ancient Temple. 30 floors are currently available. 10 floors are reasonably completable at this point, if you grind you can probably clear all 30. Rewards are available after every 10 floors, bring lots of healing items!

Looking over the preview screenshots I find it a bit amusing yet confusing that the game is called "Pokemon: Winter Version" yet there are no snowy maps. Are there some in-game that we've just yet to see till we play?

Hey Elle, fair criticism! The last act features snow fairly heavily, I'll have some screenshots to add to the preview pretty soon. I've considered changing the title, but I'm not sure what I would change it to.

@Magic Ceriaman Aron is Dragon/Steel.
