Completed Pokémon Pumpkin

This project is complete. Any future revisions will be bug fixes or small updates.
Overview

Perhaps you are wondering where the "Redux" in this game's title comes from. For that, there is a long answer and a short answer.

The Long: Pokémon Pumpkin is my second completed fangame, which I released in 2018. For those who know me from other sites, yes, Pokémon Castaway came out before Pumpkin. However, Pumpkin's development was finished before I agreed to join Relic Castle's Game Jam Four. Michael and I began talking because he showed up in my DMs demanding to test and I was too shy to say no volunteered to playtest Pumpkin. Things just rolled from there. A full year has passed since then. During that time I've started my most ambitious project yet with Michael, completed another tiny fangame, abandoned two other personal projects, and left the wonderful Pokémon Umbra team to focus on myself. (Alright, that should be enough plugs.) Though this is the long explanation, I won't get into the nitty-gritty. What I will say is that I've been very conflicted since the summer about the quality of my work and what I want my fangames to be. I found myself questioning everything from graphical styles to gameplay mechanics. In the end, I decided that I would remake Pokémon Pumpkin into a game I respect more. Pumpkin will never be perfect, but I wanted to do it a little more justice with the dev skills I have built up over the past year.

In addition, I have to give a really big thanks to @Michael for all the hard work he put into this game. He helped me revamp trainer sprites, and puzzle out the logistics (or lack thereof) of coding. He dragged me out of the angst (a bit more literally than you'd think) and motivated me to finish this.

The Short:

Old game bad. New game less bad.

What does this mean?

1. Can I transfer my save from old Pumpkin to Pumpkin Redux?
Unfortunately, you cannot. There are a number of mapping and eventing differences that will inevitably result in softlocks, bugs, and other sequential problems.

2. Do I need to play old Pumpkin to understand Pumpkin Redux?
Nope! The story's gone through a couple logistical refinements, but it's all the same in the end.

3. I found a bug in the old game, can you help me out?
First of all, don't play the old version if you somehow got ahold of it. The answer is yes, but please DM me rather than posting the bug on the thread. I'd prefer to keep problems with the new game here now, so there isn't confusion.

The Story
The game takes place over a single day, October 31st. Being the sugar-starved child that you are, you convince your overprotective sister to let you set out on a trick-or-treating adventure across the region. Her only condition? (Beyond staying on the path, not seeking out serial killers, and looking both ways before crossing the street.) Be home before midnight. Collect candy, make some unlikely friends, and solve a few mysteries along the way!

Features
  • A trick-or-treating system
  • An informal candy economy: trade your sweets for certain Pokémon, helpful items, and other useful supplies
  • A major trainer battle and encounter overhaul to increase difficulty
  • Around 8 to 16 hours of gameplay
  • A murder-mystery-solving segment
  • A walkthrough for the aforementioned murder-mystery segment, should that not be your jam
  • Pokémon from up to gen 7
  • The plot twist is probably not that you were a real ghost the entire time
  • There's uh, probably some semblance of writing in this somewhere

While I'm not the dev, I can tell you that the Cereus Campsite npc's are intentional. Cheers!

Oh, if that's the case, forget about the Bug Report! ^^ That NPC made me laugh so hard.

Huuuh, finally finished the murder-mystery-solving segment and I have to say I REALLY enjoyed it, it was such a fun and even scary thing, good job on setting the atmosphere for that part. ^o^ I would have never expected to see such a thing in a Pokemon FanGame. Had to look up in the written guide once due to being stuck as Freddi told me I dont have enough clues when I thought I had, but that may be just me - anyway, I appreciate that a guide has been included at all.

Hi, I just wanted to ask what the shiny rate for your Game actually is? Mostly out of curiosity, as after I've encountered and successfully caught...
tumblr_phj5o20E3u1vh0d58o2_r1_540.png

...this lil' guy as my 5th shiny Pokemon after little more than 9 hours of playtime, I've began to wonder whether I'm just insanely lucky or whether the shiny rate is just high.

Loving the Game by the way!

Awesome, I'm so happy you're enjoying! ^^ The game is short, so I figured, why not bump up the shiny rate? The encounter rate for it is 1556/65536 (or 2.4%). The Pokérus chance is also boosted to 3000/65536 (4.6%).

Increasing the shiny rate was a good idea, I'll display all I managed to encounter and catch once being through with the Game. :)

I'm feeling a tad bit stuck/lost, so I wanted to ask something concerning progressing with the Main Story.
So, I've been to Sonoo Village, captured Cresselia and everyone's awake again. I've also been to the beach with all the Magikarp and helped them all (+1 Shiny Pokemon, yay), checked in with the Cable Car all west and now there's that girl blocking the gate of Cycling Road that invites me over to the storytelling by the campfire. Well, I'd love to attend, but I have no real idea where that takes place! May a have a hint please? ^^

Great Game, the only thing I found myself missing after a while is a map in-game for people like me who have a bad sense of direction due to an urge to explore everything and therefor tend to get lost easily, lol.

The entrance to the woods is in the north of Gyarados Bay. Cheers!

Oh, I found it! Thank you so much, I haven't noticed that gap between the trees as an entrance even. ^^;

Sorry if it's a bit much lately, but got another question! ^^; So, I think I've finished the Main Story - Though is there a way to know that it's finished in-game as well, is there some sort of Ending? Because...
...I've met the Seaside Slasher at the camp of the Scouts north of Gyarados Bay, defeated him with Freddi's loyal Growlithe by now Arcanine and collected candy from the houses in Sonoo Village marked as the last stop in Dahlia's tour. The clock striked 10 by then. Being allowed to use Cycling Road eventually I made my way back home, but I can't seem to be able to 'trigger' anything that'd progress things!

Maybe I've done anything wrong or missed something? Thanks for any help again!

I'm not having enough yet, I WILL finish this Game! ( ÒωÓ)و☆
(But in order to being able of doing that, may I ask where I can find HM/TM Dive please? >//<; Need it to progress in Blake Mansion.)

You do not need to go through Montgolfiere Springs before the end of the game, and I wouldn't really recommend it, because the Pokémon there are higher level. It's just a little sidequest. However, you can find Dive if you enter the westernmost cave in Nuphar City and fall down the hole in the cavern's corner.

You also meet some new characters and have a chance to obtain a Pokémon while you're in that area! For actual story progression, you need to go to the roof of Blake Mansion, and from there, return back home in time for bed.

I think I've encountered a Bug or a Glitch:
I've been at the Springs after having collected Dive (You were right, this dungeon is pretty tough but curiosity got me venturing in there anyway) and defeated that Driftblim, but something weird has happened as I wanted to get back to the house with the painting: I couldn't pass the door. Nothing happens as I step on the tile that is supossed to make me enter the house, I'm even able to walk on the map like a wallbreaker.
tumblr_phj5o20E3u1vh0d58o4_r1_540.png

The sad thing is that I neither can enter a Pokemon Center now (means no access to my shinies and yet unhatched Eggs) nor progress, as while I CAN enter Hawthrone Mansion, I canNOT take the stairs up to Dahlia's room to count candy. :C

Maybe you or Michael could look into it? Please? ._.

EDIT: I guess it could have to do with how one is able to walk on an invisble path out of the map within the haunted Blake Mansion, that one Haunter hints to one? There's the same reflection of oneself.

I'm guessing you're not too familiar with RPG Maker, but this is actually a pretty minor bug and an easy fix! It looks like there is an event transfer somewhere in the area that winds up turning the through command on. Hopefully you didn't save while it was turned on, because that makes it a bit more of a pain to solve your specific situation. If that is the case, please send me a DM and I'll give you a copy of the game with a special NPC somewhere in the map you're stuck on that can rectify the situation.

^^; You're right on this, as so far I don't own a copy of RPG Maker (yet, that is). But I'm very glad that there's an easy fix for it, DM incoming!

So, I think I'm eventually through with the Game after a total of 19h and 13min, except for some hatching of collected Eggs. Unless there's a way to trigger some sort of in-game ending? Because...
...I've visited Dahlia in the Mansion to earn me a Success for having visited every house of the region, now she's busy with eating all the collected candy. Nothing seems to happen when I now return home or turn in for the night upstairs. o.o; Or am I supposed to follow her example and empty my bag?

Feedback incoming!

Things I liked/Caught my eye in a positive way

- Great sprite work! It's really cool that all the Trainer Sprites have been edited to wear a Halloween Costume etc., and the playable character is just cute.
- A love for details is found practically everywhere, and the Game really makes it to give off a Halloween-feeling.
- Collecting candy instead of Gym Badges is a neat change of pace, I enjoyed that! ^^ Kudos for it being visible which houses you've visited already and which not yet.
- Visiting the Pokemon Centers is pretty cool, you know what I mean.
- This Game made me laugh so hard several times, in most cases it was the writing: Something an NPC says, a sign or object that one can interact with or the description of an Item. Here's a favorite of mine:
tumblr_phj5o20E3u1vh0d58o3_r2_500.png
- Wild Pokemon being placed in the inaccessable spots of the map is really cute. <3
- Increased Shiny Rate!
- You can heal in EVERY bed you find while traveling.
- Eggs can be collected across the journey!
- A murder mystery sequence, visit the Moon and an abandoned observatory, and fight against other ghosts!

Things I didn't like that much/Cons

- Awww, I've looked forward for a Team Plasma-themed Pokemon Center in vain. :C
- I wish I would have noticed that there's a Town Map at home earlier, as with it in my Inventory I'd feel less lost along the way... I guess I can only blame myself for that. *nervous laughter*
- A lot of moves use non-fitting animations which soon feels off, for example Razor Leaf, Solar Beam and Seed Bomb all use the animation of Razor Leaf.
- I never really got used to my beloved Sawsbuck looking so...small when entering a battle, but I don't know whether this is due to the Game's coding or similar.
tumblr_phj5o20E3u1vh0d58o5_r1_540.png
- I would have rejoiced to find out more about that ominous 'ritual' the Campers perform within Sage Cavern - not that I disliked it (I really didn't!), but I just felt like there's room for a bit more.
- I actually like liquorice, give it all to me please

In total, I'd give this Game an 8.5/10 - It's really great for several reasons and a safe recommendation for anyone who's up for a well-made and even complete Pokemon FanGame, some smaller things just need some more polishing.

And finally... My Shiny Showcase!~ *sparkles flying everywhere*
tumblr_phj5o20E3u1vh0d58o6_r1_1280.png

My favorite are the Emolga and Kinoso <3
Special thanks to Ekat for that Squirtle, you know why ^o^

Oh my goodness! Thank-you so much! ^^ In your response to the move animations and the Sawsbuck issue, those are just the default assets for Pokémon Essentials. (The odd Pokémon in gen 5 seem to have smaller backsprites for some reason, even though they're the same size as the others) Moving on though, you're not anywhere close to finishing the game!

XTx5h5p.png

To get to the Clock Tower, where the final fight of the game is, you need to return to the mansion's underground and use your newly-acquired move of Rock Smash to clear the path to a ladder. The Mayor, among other NPCs, mentions this in his talk to you after you fight him at Blake Mansion. ("Uh, not that there are secret tunnels leading to the Clock Tower under my house! No sirree!") The Pokéball he leaves behind with Rock Smash also has a note indicating that's where you should be going next.

This game has a proper ending along with credits, so you'll definitely know when you've beaten it. But, I'll also list the post/endgame things I'm not sure you've done yet.

Really, all you can do is catch a few legendaries, including:
1. Mew, in the Elm Town Pokémart.
2. Shaymin, in another area that requires Rock Smash, to the North West of Vogt Cemetery.
3. Deoxys, by standing on the edge of the moon and reflecting about your journey.
