This game is designed to be free range. I guess I might mean "Open World" but it's not as if there's a large open field with infinite directions to travel in, so by calling it free range I mean that it's really chill and has features like these:​

The region map isn't filled out, at least not with route markers. If a character mentions a certain area or asks you to travel somewhere, they'll try to mark the path for you.

Gyms have no strict order or type, so challenge them in any order! Or not at all! They'll also rematch with different teams.

Following Pokemon! The first Pokemon in your party can be toggled as a following partner, and they'll unique reactions or pick up items based on your surroundings.

Catching Mechanics Earn exp for catching Pokemon, and have the option of switching them into the party immediately.

Unreal Time Some Pokemon might only appear at night or might appear more often in the day, but time moves fast so you don't worry about resetting your system clock.

Known issues/bugs:
There's no credits sequence or clear ending yet
There's obvious content gates where stuff was cut for completion time
Playing with the game screensize set to "Large" causes some closeup pictures to be cutoff/not display correctly.
The prompt asking to sleep in a bed might appear twice in a row, and appear before interacting with an object/person in the bed
Using the PC and swapping two Pokemon may cause the game to crash. Withdrawing/Depositing and setting Pokemon in empty spaces should work fine.


F.A.Q.:
Q:
Why did HeroVoltsy get a shiny Zorua and I didn't get a Pokemon?
A: It's an easter egg! If your character is named Voltsy, or Jasmine, you'll get a shiny Zorua.

Q: Are there other easter egg names?
A: Heck yeah. I love adding gifts for my friends so there's a bunch of names and you might even find something by accident.

Q: Why do I have to play as the boy character? Why do I have to play as the girl character?
A: The character is chosen at random, you can reset if it really bothers you. I prefer to write without using pronouns, but both protagonist's pronouns are they/them.

Q: What's the shiny rate?
A: Higher than normal. If you wanna have a giggle, there's also some names you can give your character (Glitter, Glimmer, Shimmer, Sparkle, or Shiny) that will make your whole game shiny. (some stuff is shiny locked though and won't be affected)

Q: Which Pokemon are available?
A: There's not a plan, I just add whatever suits the areas I design. At time of writing I can say that all the starters from generations 1-5 are available, and there's also some regional forms and split evolutions.

Q: How many badges are there?
A: Currently, 4 badges.

Q: Was that a reference to another fan game?
A: Probably, I like fan games and I'm not subtle about it.

Q: Why isn't this working with my emulator? What emulator do I need? Can I play this on mobile?
A: This game isn't played with an emulator, so if someone told you it was playable on mobile, they lied! The game should work fine on any Windows PC without any extra programs to run it. Macs should be able to run it through Wine(? Sorry I don't know the details on this one).

Q: How do I update to a new version? Can I keep my old save file?
A: Save files are stored on your computer separately from the game files, so it's safe to completely delete an old version of the game. The new/updated version of the game will recognize an old save file and use it with no problem.

Q: Is the game finished?
A: No, it's not complete. There's several areas that were blocked off (probably by rocks) because they're not finished. I don't know when the next big chunk of content will be done; I make games for fun so

Q: When will it be done?
A: I don't know! Making games like this is my idea of fun, so I'm not gonna like, recruit people to make parts of the game just to get it done faster. And some days I feel like playing games instead of making them :P

The game looks amazing. I love when the plot makes us, Main Characters, really close to a certain Pokémon in this friendly way <3
Hope to see more of it in the future, in the meanwhile... good job xD

Hi there,

I'm absolutely loving this game from what little I've played. But when I go see the professor for the first time, I get this game crashing error. Any idea why?

Hi, im just starting the game and it looks really interresting. Sadly i encounterd a bug, that i wanted to share. I left starting town to Mambo Cliffs and interacted with the TV in the Gatehouse and won the fight. Then I saved and when i started the Gym all Pokemon were Lvl 56. I thought, ok Im not supposed to be here. But even in the Forest everything is Lvl 56. Im probably gonna reset, lucklily its not a big deal right now but it would be better, if the Bug gets fixed.

tl;dr: TV-Fight in Mambo Gatehouse makes all Pokemon become Lvl 56.

Is this game good with joiplay? Because when i run it on joiplay, Meloetta battle sprites/animations disappear

Ah I've gotten a few asks about this game recently, was there a popular LP this week or something? 😅
Sorry I don't have any updates, my work flow is just really sporadic! If you saw my development process for this year so far it'd look something like:
  • Ported Bonfire Stories to Essentials v19; playtested but didn't actually add anything from the to-do list
  • Finished a complete overhaul of Tempo Rising's design doc to get a bunch of info about the characters and lore written in one place, and actually tracking how certain items are obtained showed some oversights that then got patched.
  • Spent a couple weeks really focusing! Wrote the design doc, nailed down an artstyle (the hardest part for me) and designed tiles and characters, built a test model, and choreographed the opening cutscene for [a game jam entry]. Then decided the final level designs were gonna be too complex to finish on time and dropped the project like a hot potato.
  • Daydreamed about Breath of the Wild instead of making or even playing any video games
  • Actual note written in [a MewYou remaster]: "F me there's 118 playable forms to define even before future-proofing in the extra evos". Did a ton of tedious data entry stuff
  • Spent all day trying to figure out what script was causing [WIP visual novel] to freeze up without giving a crash report; found a workaround but it means duplicating a certain chunk of code for every character 💢
So uh, even if there was a Discord server you can tell it wouldn't be the most interesting updates.

I like mapping, I like tile editing, I like writing silly NPC dialogues, I like hiding little secrets and jokes that almost no one will understand, I like writing design docs and postmortems, I like animating battle sprites and planning Pokemon teams that might not be competitive but they're still themed around the character who's using them and the environment they're in, god I love adding in little environmental details to make the world feel like a lived in place that has a kind of balance and rhythm to it.
Like, one of my very first tiny goals with TR's design was to make an effort of having more Pokemon in the overworld, because if the player can have a following Pokemon then there's no reason other trainers wouldn't as well, and I wanted Pokemon to show up as partners too, because it's a Pokemon world. And that's just barely a worldbuilding choice, it's more of an aesthetic one that isn't going to affect how anyone experiences the game. But I wanted to do it and I think it's thematically consistant with the main idea about positive relationships-between the protagonist and Melloetta's partnership, which isn't just about the human-Pokemon connection between them but also about the cycle of inspiring and being inspired others in all kinds of ways. The whole world is designed to reflect that idea of being interconnected and just the act of having positive relationships, following your passion, taking just a small moment to help or listen, can make an impact.

That honestly sounds like a bunch of BS written out to fill an art class essay about 'What My Project Means' but I swear it's built in the design. There's so many tiny things that I put in even thought I'd normally argue it's actually straight up bad game design in isolation- having areas visible at the edge of the camera's view teasing something interesting that the player can never actually access? Having a couple random characters exist just to pan the camera over there and get a better view is a completely intentional moment of a kind a zen where you get to stop and smell the flowers or like find beauty in the mundane by seeing through another person's perspective, you know, like whatever. Grandma likes ruminating while staring across the pond, maybe or maybe not you would've ever noticed that some of the lilly pads floating there are Lotad without stopping for a moment to look with her. There's seemingly random characters that have names and special interactions even though they're never really part of the plot, like Karie who sells drinks on the beach, or that one specific TV program that you'll only find once, or the game developer who everyone assumes is a self insert, or Nurse Ethi having so much stuff to do if you walk behind the PC desk and that's just...like narratively that's not leading anywhere because the point isn't to share a story about those characters; the point is that the world is full of good people full of love and the purest way I can express that is by putting dumb little cameos of my friends in the game! Even if that will never get across to someone playing it, and it's probably easier if players don't get that I'm just out here thrusting my unrefined feelings onto people like yes, this is the beloved, you understand?? There's a huuuge list of possible player names that the game recognizes and responds to because its' the name of a close friend, or someone in the RC community I've admired, or someone who's allways played and supported my other games; and I am actively beating players over the head with all these blatant name drops to other fangames! The theme of the game is about love and inspiration and the act of creating the game is also an expression of the same.


Okay, I'm done with my unhinged rambling. Well I'm not done but I feel like that's more than enough writing on what was suppossed to be a simple reply post. TL;DR: Thank you for playing Tempo Rising. I am very glad you like it, but I'm not going to force out a new release. There is no release date or estimated release date, please go play another lovely fangame in the meantime. Any update will be posted in this thread.

this game's quite fun! but the controls kinda urk me, and and i cant seem to change them at all. using the f1 control thing, it says its changing, but it never actually does anything. as well, the game doesnt recognize my controller at all so i cant use that to get around the issue.

The shops' inventory in this game aren't affected by the number of badges you have. All the marts are exactly the same except for having a local specialty kind of Pokeball, like the Loveball in Mambo Cliffs, Netball in Uprock Beach, ect.
Not to imply I'm working on another release ATM but the stronger potions were being saved for one of those traditional big marts that every region has to have. Currently though if you're stressing about where that Hyper Potion or Max Potion in your bag came from and how to get it again, they're probably from your following Pokemon who picked it up while in Cadence Town or Bolero City.

Following Pokemon are really OP honestly; the items they can pickup are unique for every area and include a lot of stuff that isn't obtainable any other way, like the elusive Mart Voucher :3c
