If a battle doesn't go in your favour, or the journey is just too harsh, the Nurse Joys and their strange machine are there to make sure the game goes on unhindered. Being able to take a Pokemon from battered and bruised to stable seems like magic. Still, it's a magic that no-one really questions.
But even magic had to be invented at some point. Some people in the Pokemon world today were alive when the machine didn't exist.

...And some nurse Joy, right at the bottom of the Pokemon world, had to be the last to get it.

The year is 198X. A team of top-class scientists (and one nurse) from across the globe are anxiously waiting for the storm to end. They're one of the few to work in Antaxius 'overwinter' - it's the last region to be discovered by man, an icy waste where the nights are a month long. Once the weather finally clears, an icebreaker ship can make it to the mainland and deliver valuable equipment. Among the cargo is the Re:Vive - a machine that promises to magically heal any Pokemon, and any ailment.

Resident nurse Aida has been working here for 20 years, and out of all the miracle cures she's seen, this one could be for real. She knows it'll change the field of Pokemon care forever, and possibly the rest of the world. No more panic, no more stress, no more death, even.
But how will she spend the last week before that change happens, knowing things can't and shouldn't go back?

The Last Nurse Joy won't have traditional Pokemon gameplay (mostly) - instead, it's more of a slow-paced puzzle game. Each patient will have an ailment that needs to be treated - but unlike vets in our world, a Nurse Joy has to deal with over eight hundred different kinds of pets.
Most of the puzzle lies in finding out what the issue is, or getting a finicky patient to co-operate with you!

~Take your patient's temperature, measure their heartbeat, or even X-Ray them at the blue observation desk.
~Have a look at their anatomy, or find out if Ice-Types can catch a cold at the green diagnosis bookshelf.
~Pick up everything you'll need to treat, feed, or comfort your patient at the red treatment table!
~If you're completely stuck, try the hint chair.
~You can get a lot out of just observing your Pokemon, and more importantly - you can pet all of them.
Once that's done, talk to Chansey to lock in your treatment, and see if your judgement was right...

Depending on how well you've done your job, you can get a Bronze, Silver, or a Gold ranking. There are 6 cases total in the game (with bonus cases potentially being added in the future once the judging is done. I'll keep you updated on that.) How many extra steps you took to make sure the Pokemon was happy, if you even succeeded in treating the Pokemon; all of that determines your rank, and...eventually, the ending you get.

Oh - and digging a little deeper into the where, why, and how of your patient's injury could lead to something special, but you'll have to find that yourself.

Note: this game depicts animal injury and distress in a semi-realistic way.

MAIN TEAM:
AnonAlpaca - Lead Dev (Lead Dev???) for the game.
TechSkylander - Provided three custom scripts for the game - Drawers, Scoring, and a Medical Summary - and also bugtested most of the game. (Go check out those scripts, they should be linked on this page when they post them!)
Pantastic - Sprited some Pokemon, then both designed and sprited both Dr. Clementine and Dr. Garcia, who, she would like to clarify, is "the best character."
AceTrainerAvery - Made fogs, a few cutscenes, and composed some original music tracks for the game! Aida's theme is a certified hood classic.

Firstly...
I'll put a Content Warning for some blood, cuts, bruising, injury on cases 1&6. It's nothing gory, but if you don't want to see that, I totally understand.
Secondly...
itemXXX4_2.png
1615853277912.png
itemXXX4_1.png

These two jams were edited to become...
Saline Solution, and a Painkiller!

1615853197426.png
itemXXX2_1.png

This feather became the Distracting Toy!
---
1615758906302.png

The owner of the Pikachu, Dr. Taijiri was played by trchar075!
---
With a bit of Gen 4 restyling, and recolouring to fit the red, green, blue and white of the nurse's office...
This table became the Operating Table - the center of every case!

This game table was placed in both the lounge, and the locker room. Even scientists play card games.

Thirdly...
If you want to talk more about this game, then you can join a (temporary) Discord server dedicated to it. It's a tiny bit barren at the moment since I kind of forgot to maintain it amongst all the stress of the jam game, but here's the invite anyway. If you want to contact me personally - if there's any issues with crediting, if I need to include anything else on this thread, then feel free to reply, and we can continue our conversation in Discord DMs.

Lastly...
This is my first time being a lead dev as opposed to a lead spriter, and while there were a lot of growing pains involved and a lot of mistakes I undoubtedly made, I'm still immensely happy that I could put out a complete story, and thankful for everyone that helped make this happen.
I hope the Last Nurse Joy...brings you joy?

Bug report here: If you walk to exactly the tile that causes the whiteout transition and back down fast enough you get stuck in perma-whiteout mode if you save after that. I lost my 36 score perfect skitty case save to that. If someone wants to tell me where the save files are kept I'll gladly share mine. actually here have a video:
I suppose as a minor additional bug you can walk through one of the shipping containers and in the room with a broom and voltorb flip table the broom is solid and blocks up-down movement despite being able to stand in both spaces.

Oh no! If you still have the save, I can try to fix it! It should be in C/Users/(Your name)/Saved Games/The Last Nurse Joy

the extension isn't correct obviously but here's my save file. If you can fix it I'd be happy I'm just amazed noone else found that bug before me.

I'm surprised, too! Hopefully it'll be an easy fix!

I'm afraid I'm not quite sure how to get the save out of a text file- would you be at all willing to upload the .rxdata directly to a filehosting site and link it here? (You can PM me so the link's not publicly viewable!)

you can view file extensions right? all I did was add a ".txt" to the end of the save file's name to make it pass the forum's file format check.

That's the trouble, though- by adding the .txt, it saved as a .txt file instead of as a .rxdata, so now it's in a different file format, and there's no way to convert it back into a .rxdata.
right click file, click rename, delete ".txt" from the file name, ignore the warning that will pop up. Wala you now have a .rxdata file. the forum's file check just does a string compare on the file name. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/385356529240637451/851591957914583080/Game.rxdata fudge it here it is uploaded to a private channel on my discord server.

Ah, sorry, I didn't have "view file extensions" turned on, so I didn't realize I had that option.

I think this should be fixed!
It is indeed fixed so thank you and hopefully the video helps you hotfix that very serious soft-lock bug.

Really enjoyed this game, it was very beautiful in appearance and so different in gameplay. There were so many differences from how I played to how others played, there seems to be all kinds of interesting branching points. I especially noticed the differences that happened from my game between a popular twitch streamer/youtuber who recently played. Got me thinking just how much there is.

I ended up getting bronze, silver, and perfect most of the time, not all the ranks. Despite my trial and error, without a guide I found myself a bit uncertain on what exactly was needed. Is there a guide or walkthrough available in getter the best ranks/ending? Or perhaps each ending?

hi! love the game (gonna have to go back and replay it a few times since i missed a few perfects) but um... having some trouble at the last stretch here, plus some prior issues that i didn't understand (so in other words be warned here be spoilers for like Most of the whole game i think)

... also i don't know how to do that little dropdown spoiler box, so... bear with me here

firstly, the earlier issue: i could not get a perfect on pikachu no matter how hard i tried and i don't know what i was doing wrong... as far as i could tell i got it all right! correct diagnosis, told it to stay at home and rest, even gave it some vitamin a and c, and yet...? it also had a blank notebook page the entire time with only its stats available to view, i don't know if that was intentional or not.

kinda the same thing with the rest of the pokemon, honestly... i really don't know what i was meant to do to make any of it go better than it did? the pikachu one in particular absolutely baffled me but i don't know what i did wrong with zweilous either, other than maybe giving it the blood test a little earlier than i should have...

secondly, the issue i am presently having... i don't know where to get food for zweilous? i can't access my fridge since "well chansey doesn't have a MOUTH right now" but... well, i'll probably be fighting it well before anyone gets back to me here because i'm rather impatient and right on the cusp of fighting it at the moment, but on a second playthrough i'd love to know where i could get food for it so i could add it to my team next playthrough. checked the entire base, everyone's rooms, even went to the docks, couldn't find a damn thing

There should be some in the lounge freezer! It's in the back left corner of the lounge!

For Pikachu and Zwelious, I can PM you how to get the perfect, but if you want to start with just a little nudge- for their cases, the Extra Mile's not just about giving them the right treatment, but also figuring out what led to this situation- you'll need to talk to their trainers in both cases for it!

(Also if you want to do dropdown spoilers, it's "[ spoiler]" to start it and "[/ spoiler]" to end it, without the spaces but the way you did it is totally fine!)

Played the game the game all the way through and grinded out all the Extra Mile awards for the cases - really loved how subtle but obvious-in-hindsight those clues to trigger the Extra Mile scenes were! Did find two bugs/glitches - but there weren't game-breaking. Thought I'd let you know just in case;
Both were during the Gothitelle mission. I selected Talk > My qualifications, then when I interacted with Gothitelle immediately after, it acted as if I had fixed the rug for Pikachu, giving me the prompts “Are you scared for Pikachu? Is something coming? Can I change the future? Step back.” and showed me the scene for Zweilous in the Locker Room. Aka, I was able to skip the fixing of the rug premonition/action/reaction scenes. Second bug/glitch is if you speak to Will from the left-side of the bed, the character models misalign for Gothitelle's anger/mourning scene.

Only thing that jarred me were little things like not immediately getting the emotional context of a line of dialogue (this wasn't often), or the time-skip(s?). E.g. After the Skitty event, suddenly I'm being told Aida had been there for years when I thought it had been only a month, or a day even and Aida was just reminiscing on how stressful yesterday was. But that is just being nit-picky. Story was well-written and I found myself getting invested into the characters. Soon as I saw each character design, I immediately got a "yes, that is definitely a Pokemon Game's important NPC design" vibe. They were unique and conveyed personality immediately.

I would love to see a more extended, fleshed-out version of this game, where you are heading out into the routes to rescue teammates, having to make moral choices like helping wild Pokemon (despite being told not to interfere in the 'natural order' of things), and more wondrously events that would have occurred before the arrival of the Re:Vive. And maybe some after. After all, you can't haul the machine out into the wilderness.

Also, that bottom-left dorm...
I triggered the... 'event' in there on one run-through but not my second. Thought I had done the same steps but did I miss something or is it random chance?

i'd hoped getting some sleep and trying again later might help me crack it, but alas, i am exactly as lost as i was when i posted that... would love some help, i've checked just about everything i could think of

I found a bug that seems to happen if you both give zwelious the cone of shame and then talk to Scarlet about its underlying condition? Just after telling her what you think is the reason he always "runs cold" the game resets back to just before you invite her in to see him once you decide on treatment. The first time it happened I picked autoimmune disorder and then got stuck in the evalutation table after interacting with zwelious as if I was still treating them. The second time I picked anemia and it won't let me leave until I pick a supplement to treat the anemia but I can now walk through all tiles. It still lets you pick a supplement like normal but uh, walking through walls I assume is not intended
