-----Thoughts-----
This is my second Pokémon fangame, and I am very happy with it. Compared to "The Rising Sun" (my first game, also set in Hoenn), Littleroot Researchers has better graphics, story, characterization and gameplay. I spent way too much time on this game, and I'm pretty burnt out. However, I really pushed myself this time to create something special. I created fogs for the first time and also two music pieces for the game (Intro + Petalburg Woods).
I hope you enjoy it! No more four-hour jam games from me, and definitely no more Hoenn games. 😅

Hey there! Just finished my playthrough, genuinely had a great time. This is getting spotlight for sure, I can promise you that. Here are my pros and cons:

Pros:
  • Mapping. I mean it's Hoenn, you don't have a whole lot to work with but you really changed things around and made the maps your own. I love the new NPCs scattered around the maps, too. The fogs were just the extra mile to make everything look so much more pleasing and aesthetic.
  • Aestetic. I mean your tileset is great, you picked a good set of tiles and it shows that care went into it all.
  • The story and concept. I mean, this all just feels... Official, you know? It feels like this could be a perfect little free DS-ware game that Pokemon put out on the side and everything is just so clean.
  • I just have to put an extra pro here for just how great the eventing is? Like, top notch, and excellently coreographed.
  • Music choices were great!
  • I loved the new "stronger Pokemon walking around" mechanic! I don't know if these Pokemon have stronger IVs or anything, but it was a really cool idea that made traversal a bit more challenging even after I had already beaten all of the base trainers on the route. This is how the whole "overworld encounters" thing that peope are keen to talk about should have really been done.
  • I also liked how in repeat instances of routes some trainers would reset themselves and ask for a rematch! That was a cute touch, and I think I'd really like it if more games had neat backtracking features like this.
  • Most of the dialogue was really spot on to what I would expect out of a classic official game! You really nailed that child-friendly tone.
Cons:
  • There was a lot of backtracking in instances where there really didn't need to be. Too many instances of characters saying "let's go back to (insert place!)" and instead of the game taking you there, it would instead insist you walk back there yourself.
  • The game's balancing was good. A little too good. The game was pathetically easy imo, I didn't black out once and there was no need for me to change around my team one bit. That's also partially due to the trainer's limited team selection choices.
  • There were a few odd dialogue quirks, like professor Birch saying "Y'all."
That's it! Not a lot to dislike here. Great job Kenny, truly. I absolutely look forward to seeing what you make next.

No bush tags on any of the grass! :(

There are a lot of instances of fog from doors overlapping the players. Imo, I'd just make these tiles instead!

Ahhh thank you so much for the kind words, NocTurn!

  • Overworld encounters are definitely underrated! I didn't give them stronger IVs (only higher level), but it really makes catching a specific Pokémon a lot easier.
  • The easy difficulty was intentional. I think most people prefer easier jam games, but yeah I think I made it a bit too easy.😅
  • I'm so glad you liked the story and dialogue. I'm trying to improve my writing, and I think I am!

Thank you again for playing! I know you're pretty harsh with your feedback, so seeing such a positive review really makes me happy! 😊

Finished playing your game, overall it was great to return to Hoenn!
The Lotad ferry! It was great!
I also think the balancing was nice. No need to grind yet you can't easily sweep through everything with no thought.
The chapter system was fun and the story overall was engaging.

Unsure if you intentionally didn't capitalize the s or not.

Same with Pokemarts.

This issue was with every transition, if you tried to go back you'd hit a wall.

Could jump up the corners of some of the ledges

Could walk on and off of this bridge, did make a nice shortcut though.

Overall though, it was fun to return back to Hoenn.

- Version 1.8 10/09/21:
Raised some trainer levels by one or two.
A certain map should have a fog now.
Fixed an error for the female protagonist character sprite.
Ava's trainer back sprite now has the right hat.
The bridges now work properly.
Fixed typos.
Check out the amazing YouTubers/streamers I listed on the thread! Thank you for the support, everyone!😊

Actually, that isn't quite true. You can play RPG Maker XP games using this game "translator" called JoiPlay!
Actually, that isn't quite true. JoiPlay doesn't support the latest versions of Ruby, so games made using the latest versions of Pokemon Essentials are unplayable unless JoiPlay itself decides to add Ruby 3 support.
