If the stars are aligned and the RNG gods are kind, this game is essentially a straight line and 5 battles. You can't get any simpler than that... right?
What's more implausible than the stars aligning, I would say, is having your tastes line up with mine...
...which is why, if you played the game, and somehow enjoyed it in any way or form, you have my deepest and most sincerest gratitude. <3

Late 2 tha jam feedback party but I finally finished it last night, so here are my thoughts:
PROS:
-Fun as hell.
-Sprites are beautiful. Anything with overworld animations in gen 3 style automatically wins my heart forever plus one.
-Characters/lore/etc are fucking awesome and really fresh. I love hellgirl's dialogue so much
-Difficulty is reallllly good on the bosses.
-Soundtrack is really nice, if a bit repetitive sometimes.

CONS:
-The game over screen drags on and on and on, only to go back to the title screen rather than your save. Those two things in combination make it super annoying, it's basically faster to alt+f4 and relaunch it, which is really not enjoyable.
-Kabutops trainers are frustratingly inconsistent sometimes. I think limiting/tweaking the pokemon pools of these guys a little more would be ideal, both in general and in regards to singles/doubles. Alcremie probably shouldn't be something I see as my opponent's third pokemon in singles.
-Kinda wish it got a little harder as it progressed, as far as I could tell all the stages were drawing from the same pool of rooms/trainers/etc.

Another random nitpick thought I had -- you should totally add Hisuian forms! They did all canonically die out, lol.
Overall I really enjoyed it, gooooood shit!!

Hihi!! Thank you so much for playing!! <33 I'm so happy that you enjoyed the game! ^^

Ahhh I totally understand your gripes about inconsistency. Alcremie shouldn't appear in singles, but the gameplay mechanisms of those Frontier-type facilities in the main series games (and games inspired by them, like this one) dictate that it will. The Kabutops' battler pools are actually taken straight from the list of Pokémon you can fight in USUM's Battle Tree and SwSe's Battle Tower (which do not have Hisuian forms, sadly), and both single and double battlers draw 3 Pokémon at random from the same pool. It's a pool that includes reeeaaally suspect stuff like Jolly Reuniclus and Modest Weavile alongside really, really gross stuff like Lax Incense Garchomp with Sandstorm, Sand Tomb and Protect (I actually couldn't take it and replaced the Lax Incense with a Soft Sand in my game lol). The later stages actually do draw from a different pool, where Pokémon gradually get more optimized movesets (Stage 3 onwards contain Megas and Stage 5 contains Legendaries), though the random nature of the battler pools and the presence of Pokémon with shitty movesets still remain. Supposedly, the fun is in the RNG and seeing how lucky you are in the opponents you get. ^^ The only "consistent" and "optimized" teams are those of the bosses, and that's because I came up with them myself (and I'm not the best at team building too >_<)

I suppose I could evaluate each Pokémon in the pool, sort them according to the difficulty it poses to the player, perhaps create separate lists for single and double opponents - but holy shit have you seen the sheer number of Pokémon and trainers in there???? It's the kind that turns your brain into mush just by merely looking at it. I probably spent more time on trainers.txt writing trainer teams than working on anything else in the game, and I really, really don't want to touch that document ever again, so forgive me for this T__T

And do forgive me for that game over screen too! It's one of those (unfortunately for the players, way too many) moments where aesthetics won over functionality in their ever-raging battle inside me T__T (the screen is timed to the game over music!) You didn't need to relaunch the game, however; you could just restart it with F12~

Once again, thank you for playing and leaving a comment! ^^

I really, really enjoyed your game. It's short (and that's a good point for me) but polished, tiles are just so beautiful, you have access to good mons, can customize them and..well as a metal fan, the music is on point. You even have it matching the game and the dialogues, how cool is that ?!

I end up doing it with a mono-dark to remain RP but Arceus that was awful against the last boss
I HATE YOU TAPU LELE

I found one bug, when after having two times met an aerodactyl then heal myself, had my first pokemon still poisoned.
And one time, a Comfey used Floral healing on me (that was sweet but not the best behaviour against a hell hound xD)

Just a little rant : please ban OKHO moves, they are just frustrating when the AI is lucky T T

I loved the waifus, my favorite one is the grimm reaper, by far the best material xD and the them of the game, waifus, music reminds me a little bit of Helltaker, is there an inspiration ?

Thanks a lot for your game,, I hope to play another one soon !

Hello! Thank you for playing the game and sharing your thoughts! <33

Your kind praise really made my day! ^^ I wanted to place some of my favorite instrumental metal tunes in a game and I'm so happy it resonated with you. And massive respect for doing a monotype run in a game like this! I hope Tapu Lele doesn't give you any more nightmares further down the road hahaha ><

Addressing the heals, the fact that your poisoned Pokémon didn't get healed wasn't a bug, but an intended effect. Statues that do not come with a battle heal only some of your Pokémon (if you pay attention to the dialogue, that's what it'll say!) whereas statues that require you to battle heal the entire party. I didn't want to dispense too many free heals to the player haha. As for Comfey... you can thank the AI and your luck for that. It's definitely a Pokémon more suited for double battles, but quoting my reply to Lichenprincess above:

Alcremie shouldn't appear in singles, but the gameplay mechanisms of those Frontier-type facilities in the main series games (and games inspired by them, like this one) dictate that it will. I figured that for every OHKO move you die to, you get a Comfey that heals you, so it sort of balances out in the end? Though, I will admit, it's probably not the most optimal way of going about this haha >< Once again, thank you so much for playing, and I'm glad you stuck through despite your frustrations!

PS: The Grim Reaper seems to be the favorite of many! <3 I'm kind of proud of how her scythe and her legs turned out. ^^ The game was actually inspired by cheesy metal aesthetics with some gothic elements thrown in it (an aesthetic that for some reason really appeals to me lol). I've never actually heard of Helltaker but if it's like anything you described, I think it'll totally be up my alley. ^^

Hey Armin! Congrats on the judge spotlight! I really liked this game!
  • First of all, I absolutely loved the title screen and the intro with the epic music. That instantly pumped me up and I was so ready to rule Hell.
  • I'm not usually a big fan of teambuilding/battle sim games (mostly because I'm not very good at competitive), but I really liked how you used the battle pike format and added a twist to it. The gameplay was super refreshing and creative.
  • The explosion effect was soo satisfying. I loved the little remarks from the protagonist too.
  • I liked the hints from the statues! It's such a small addition, but it added so much more depth to the game.
  • Minor nitpick, but I thought there were too many floors/rooms, so it got a little repetitive near the end. I think it would've been interesting if you introduced new room types as the player progressed maybe!
  • The character sprites are insaneeee. You're an amazing artist, the designs were so incredible. My favourite one is probably the warden.
  • I loved how every floor had a different colour!
But yeah, this was really fun! It had a very unique and refreshing gameplay, and the aesthetics/music were perfect too. Also, this game reminded me a lot of Hades, which is one of my favourite games! The underworld/hell setting, the epic music, the boss fights, the somewhat roguelike gameplay...very similar vibes!

Good job! I look forward to whatever you have next ~

Hi Kenny! I should be thanking you (and the rest of the judges!) for liking my game enough to warrant it a spotlight <33333

Honestly, I have the Battle Pike to thank for like, 95% of the gameplay decisions hahaha. The hints from the statues came from them too! And the number of rooms! I was actually in kind of a quandary about whether 75 is the best number for rooms during the course of making the game, going from "75 is too few rooms!" on one day and "75 is too many rooms!" on the next day, eventually deciding to leave it as it is - evidently I'm not the best at gauging things like that haha! Nonetheless, I'm really happy you played through it, despite the game not being your genre. ^^

Also yay for the warden love! <33 She was the first of the bosses I sprited and, if I remember correctly, the first thing I made for the game~ I'm particularly fond of the hot pink long gloves + military uniform combo haha. I have heard of Hades, and saw some screenshots + gameplay footage of it (despite having never played it myself), and I think it's them that planted in me the idea that hell doesn't have to be all red and can come in many colors as well. ^^

Thank you so much for playing and commenting so nicely once again~~

there's a problem, apparently I can't open the game anymore because the game does not find the game.ini, it worked every time before, now it just says that; could you help me out?

You probably don't have the game.ini file in your game folder (the highlighted file in the picture below), when you should. Perhaps you might want to try re-downloading the game, and make sure that all its contents are extracted properly?

The one thing I noticed is a file called HELL+GIRL v1.3.rar in your folder but not mine... perhaps you can try deleting it and see if it runs the game properly (although I'm not certain if that will help)? If you haven't already tried it, you can delete your current folder and download the game again to see if it works. And if the error still persists, please take a screenshot of the error message and post it, that'll help me greatly. Thank you!

Sorry for texting you back only now, so:

-the ".rar" is the file where I extract the game after I clicked on your "game (v1.3)";
-deleting it doesn't resolve the problem;
-deleting the folder an re-downloading it dosn't work either;
-the only thing that pops up when I start the game is:

Sorry again for being late and thanks for the help and support you're giving me.

According to this post by Jou from a while back, "Apparently, you just need to remove all numbers and dots from the name of the folder your game is stored in." Perhaps try renaming the folder from "HELL+GIRL v1.3" to simply "HELLGIRL" or any equivalent? Hope it works this time.
