Game Jam Vesion Download: Made Using: RPG Maker XP
Team:
  • PyroGaleZX (Maps, Events, Story)
  • BriefStar (Playtester)
  • HeirEhm (Playtester, registered Shiny Hunter)
Notes: Participate in the Master's League, a tournament held between trainers across various regions with the goal of finding out who stands at the top above all other trainers. Thanks to Professor Oak, the local professor of your hometown of Pallet Town, you'll receive your first Pokemon and be able to travel to catch Pokemon. Along the way, you'll be traveling with your neighbor Camilla as the two of you battle trainers in hopes of making your way to become the #1 trainer in the world. Travel across different regions and catch Pokemon and battle other trainers, and of course, Evil Teams will make their return and a new evil team will rise. Who is orchestrating an attack on the World of Pokemon, and what do they want from the different evil teams of Pokemon's past? Find out, as I try to get frequent updates to this game.

Over 2 Hours of Content, 3 Chapters to play through. I hope you have fun, this was as always fun to make.

UPDATE: Hey everyone, I wanted to thank everyone for playing this Fan Game I had dreamed of for a while. I always dreamed on making a Fan Game and I'm so happy to have made what I have so far. However this project is taking a moment of pause as I want to go back now that version 20 is out and try my hand at making this game better than before. I have plans prepared, I actually finished mapping Kanto and started work in Galar with the inclusion of Dynamax. I've learned a lot in the background though since starting this as a Summer Game Jam Project so I was to take the time to rebuild it from the ground up again as I'm not really proud of how it looks and I was to change a lot about it. I apologize but thank you all deeply from the bottom of my heart for everything and I hope to be able to make something better for people to enjoy and I hope to make something that I can enjoy.

Current Version:
Kanto = Up to Pewter City, new Pewter Museum Side Quest
Johto = Blackthorn City, 2 battles with Clair available.

A lovely little game indicative of a grand adventure. Encapsulates the feeling of the originals well.

Thoughts:

- Textbox sentences are quite long and need some breaks here and there, perhaps you could cut the dialogue down into smaller chunks? This is especially apparent in the first conversation with mom and Prof. Oak.

- Camilla looks like a fun character, perhaps you could try showing her traits without having her say them explicitly? "e.g. I have high energy etc" shouldn't be something she outright says upon meeting her, if ever unless asked in a conversation that doesn't happen on the first interaction.

- the mapping is really tight and beautiful! I've rarely seen an implementation of kanto that is neither too big nor too compact like in FRLG. Well done!

- Tile choice is fantastic, are some of these custom?

- There are some typos here and there but nothing major, it doesn't bother me personally

- I laughed at one of the aides' remarks, yes it sure is strange that each time a "national" pokedex is filled, even more pokemon are being discovered...

- The game's opening sequence and you getting your first Pokemon replicates the feeling of the originals well

- The ranking system is interesting, what are you thinking about doing with it later on? I don't know if the ranking idea comes from Masters (the mobile game) cause I haven't played it, but I think it has huge potential. Oh wait, Tohjo-cave-you, just said Masters and Journeys is a big inspiration.

- glad to see overworld encounters, though personally I'd prefer either exclusively OW or normal encounters

- Why is the game's filesize so large? Did you need that much music? If yes then consider looping smaller tracks to reduce game size, or even reducing track bitrate using Audacity.

- what happens when a trainer walks towards me when there's a pokemon inbetween us?

- nice implementation of the various features, ranging from raid battles, to quests, to emojis.

- I think grass encounter rates are a bit high

- Increased shiny odds? cause I just yolo'd a shiny rattata

- You might want to reduce the bright pink light's intensity or even color right before that pokemon flees, some people have sensitivity to lights of that sort (not to mention that it's not very pleasant to look at)

- At last, someone that mapped pewter using rock/mountain tiles as well, I mean, come on gamefreak

- like the small details and references

- like the fact that there's a lot of NPCs, makes everything feel more alive

- krabby in the sand!

- the game has potential in terms of humor. And yeah, that's also on Brief's side

- should rematches affect score?

- I wonder how you'll handle the whole journeys thing. Roadblocking different parts of different regions doesn't feel organic, how about opening up the regions after a certain point? Also, it's better to aim small and include like 2 regions, than include EVERYTHING - it's gonna be incredibly difficult to manage. If not entire regions, then pick the best places from each. Otherwise you'll get burned out real fast.

Bugs:
- softresetting by pressing f12 throws an error with the bag script

- pokemart table tiles, upper part, should be one level higher in priority than what they are now (prob 0)

- Route 1/ Viridian Forest has some lag, could be tile animation related

- I don't know why but there was no music once I lost to the rattata guarding the supplies, respawned home, got outside quick, and headed straight for the route. I did run into an encounter first thing right after I got out of pallet

- not really a bug but if you attempt to leave the lab without having received your pokemon, there's no dialogue preventing the player from exiting - yet at the same time the player can't exit (same with door behind oak)

- uh should the player's rank increase from 201 to 10114 simply from winning a battle against camilla?

- Camilla should be facing Oak when he's talking to her post-player win

- Lass, upon losing, says: "what a shame pidgey, you were graceful" shouldn't it be "disgraceful"? You meant to say pidgey used to be graceful and it wasnt during her battle?

- some mons venture further out of grass

- you can move your character before the camera's pan finishes during the team rocket event in R2

- Team Rocket Grunt encounters have no music, neither do battles

- Entering and exiting Viridian Forest should be pushing you one tile further down the exit/entrance

- Can walk on viridian big berry trees

- blackbelt in pewter has no dialogue

- the fridge is literally stuck inside a wall in one of pewter's houses

- onix doesn't "say" anything when interacted with

- as with the camilla battle, defeating brock gets you from ranking 250something to 9800something...

- viridian forest doesn't have daynight shading

- Route 22 cave isn't enterable pre-story events, yet there is no dialogue indicating that

- defeating Camilla in Route 22 doesn't automatically show the ranking dialogue and the next event page (you've probably set the event to "action" instead of "autorun")

- last rank that is compared to new rank seems to always be the same 200something, while new rank changes

- Defeating Brief gets you stuck in an infinite autorun event loop, where he keeps giving you litten and "running away" to test stuff. Seems like he'll be testing himself forever xD

Hey, just wanted to say thank you so much for the feedback on my Fan Game and all the very kind words, I will be taking it all. Just to clarify a few things, unfortunately, none of the Tilesets I used were custom, some were edited, like the Pokemon Center and Pewter Gym were more saturated versions of their originals with the walls. If you're curious I always make sure to include the credits of everything I used, (For Compilation Tilesets I linked the specific sheet).

There is an increased Shiny Rate after Brief commented saying I should increase it lol, also just personal bias.

Addressing the 200 Ranking thing, the 200 is what the rank changed by, I'll go back and work it some more to make the language easier to read.

Thank you also for telling me of the infinite kitten loop lol.

I also plan for the regions to prioritize key areas and cut some out so I don't run out of Maps.

And I'm going to be on top of bugs that may be caused by some Plugins, since some have been updates, and I'll do my best to improve other areas that you suggested.

Update (v1.0.1)
Bug Fixes:
-Updated Plugins to the most recent versions
-Many locations that were blocked off and had no dialogue now have dialogue
-File is no longer 900MB
-Team Rocket now uses actual Battle Music
-Big Berry Tree is no longer Big Berry Ghost Tree
-Pewter City no longer has Fridges on walls
-NPCs that didn't say stuff now have dialogue
-Viridian Forest adjusts to time of day
-Brief at the end of the game no longer is subjected to being stuck in an infinite Autorun Event of Free Littens.
-Other Quality of Life Changes

For the best experience (as well because it's smaller) I recommend playing through the new Download rather than merging since the music making the file massive were MP3 files and the new music is OGG files. This shouldn't affect save files, since the game is still named the same as the original.

Soft resetting with F12 still seems to present an error, I'm trying to look into it to fix it, but in the meantime, just be wary of F12.

Next update coming soon hopefully.

Update (v1.1.0)
New stuff:
  • We got 8 character types to choose from people so take your pick, this was my best way of doing character customization
  • We got 2 New Chapters: "A Whole New World" and "Duel of Dragons" both chapters will take you from the Kanto Region to Johto where you'll meet Professor Elm and some other new faces.
  • We got outfits! Only 2 so far but there's more on the way soon
  • The file size, unfortunately, got bigger due to a dump of music that needs to be organized still
  • Level Scaling of both Trainers and Wild Pokemon has been added in so go battle as much as you want out there.
  • With Level Scaling there's a new way of difficulty for Boss Fights, playing "Ace Trainer" Mode will let the player battle tougher bosses, while "Traveler" Mode lets the player more so enjoy the story.
  • More fun was added, made sure to do that
  • Hope you enjoy, I'm going to bed.

- The World Championships gets referred to several different titles, only realized this recently so going back through soon to fix!

Leave any bugs or glitches you find!

On route 46, I can't do the first battle on it. I immediately get this error that just crashes the game.
