It is the year 1957. Samuel Oak, a 20 year-old prodigy, has just returned back to his home country after spending three years in the world’s best university. With him, he brings science, technology, and the true spirit of trainerhood. On a mission to establish the first ever League in the East, Oak will have to adjust to local battling traditions, overcome bureaucratic hurdles, and introduce local uneducated Tamers to the proper way of doing things.

FIND OUT HOW IT ALL PLAYED OUT BACK IN THE 50ies! Gen 0!

Rch8x7d.png

STORY
1957 Kanto is a place under heavy development. The concept of a “trainer” is relatively new – with most people who are on the creature business calling each other “Tamers”. They battle for money, they have the right to take another Tamer’s Pokemon upon winning, and they generally cause a great deal of pain to the locals.

Once Kantonians learned how to craft capsules (Pokeballs) out of Apricorns, a “creature craze” swept through the country. The rush of making easy money, putting responsibilities aside, and experiencing unprecedented freedom and strength captivated the youth. The frequent complains from seniors went unheard, students started dropping out of school, and gangs quickly formed.

In this chaotic environment, you are tasked with bringing to Kanto (and the entirety of the "Pokemon" nation)... not a ruleset, not a new way of battling, but an entire infrastructure that will eventually end up being responsible for the shaping of modern trainer conventions as we know them. Will you be able to bring law and order to the land, or will the wild environment of Kanto get you?

o1pEmss.png

FEATURES:

- Inspired by the beta versions of Red and Green, (Trainers using whips, economy based around Pokemon, early lore or concepts that got scrapped, pokemon being closer to natural organisms than wee-wee-mythological multibeings from multiverses)

- Remastered Kanto that is visually closer to how it looked back in gen 1 (hey, no nostalgia pandering here, don’t go down the genwunner route, kthxbye). For instance, Route 1 has fields on either side, not trees as in Gen 3. Kanto is much more rural, as represented in older artwork.

- Manmade items are practically non-existent, you need to make Pokeballs from Apricorns (unreal time system means you can get a ball converted relatively fast), find berries or roots, and generally be economically-minded. You can buy Pokemon but you can’t sell them.

- Establish the first Gyms and the first League, by taking down Tamer groups whose activities can sometimes be... reprehensible

- The only evolution method known is “level up” evolution. At least to those who DO know that Pokemon can even evolve in the first place…

- Many Pokemon that are known to be rare today, are ubiquitous in this era. Well, not THAT ubiquitous, but much easier to find.

- Access your “Storage Boxes” from the menu. Well, computers don't exist yet, at least in Kanto, and there is no restriction forcing teleportation upon your ...balls… if you have more than six of them. So you can simply stuff those extra mons inside your bag.

- Organize your resources carefully. Berries aside, they are limited, and losing a battle means losing a lot of money. Healing services are both rare and expensive.

- A modified HGSS soundtrack, with a couple of OG tracks in the mix, that aims to replicate the OG feeling of Kanto music in an authentic way. What would the soundtrack have sounded like back then, if it wasn’t restricted by GB’s audio hardware?

- Discover the background of various characters, from Koga to Bertha, and witness the transformation of a ragtag, loose group of Tamers into Gym Leaders.

- A heartwarming story that explains Oak’s background and his role in every future trainer’s journey
.

CHARACTERS:

The four childhood friends:

Samuel

A 20 year-old prodigy whose intellectual prowess earned him the title of the youngest professor on earth. Returning from Unova, and now on a mission, he ventures out to open a laboratory and earn an official position in the University of Celadon. A bit grumpy and certainly not very warm. His childhood friends, who greet him upon returning, are eager to bring his heart back home.

Agatha

Agatha is a very sensitive woman whose aim is to become a nurse. Despite getting every single attempt to make Sam open up to her, shut down, she keeps going. A very giving person who borders on naivety. Always looks at the bright side of life.

John

Sam’s best (and perhaps only real) friend. He grew up with Sam’s father, whom he absolutely adored. Physically gifted, he always protected Sam from trouble, trouble that frankly, was caused in part by Sam’s social incompetency. Or perhaps, (and as counterweight to his fascination with objects) by his absolute indifference to people. John is very competitive and has an unwavering spirit. He secretly admires Sam for his intelligence, despite all his grandiose declarations that physical strength is all that matters.

Athena

Athena is a bit of a tomboy with a strong sense of adventure, and buttloads of energy. Sometimes “sense of adventure” becomes “total recklessness” and she ends up in trouble. John rescuing her all the time (yes, there’s a trend here with John) eventually got to her and she fell for him. She is the only person who can calm him down after a bad day.

=================================================================

The four childhood friends, will eventually meet again. And it’s up to Sam to decide whether fun and work can coexist, and whether those four will get to relive their childhood bliss during an adventure that will hopefully make up for the three years Sam had been away (and for Sam's obsession with studying that led to total neglect of his personal life).

In Red’s Journey West, you will be faced with harder (than usual) fights. If you are competent in competitive, they will be a walk in the park - otherwise, since they were designed to teach non-competitive players how to adapt to the scene, you will come out with greater confidence in your skills, as a result. So don't fret, and approach your choices with a tactical mind!

Find out the truth about Red's missing brother, and the events that transpired between Red's loss and his arrival in the West, in this emotional journey about the process of coming of age, in a time when traditional family structures have started falling apart.

On a fateful day, on the very peak of Mt. Silver, Red was dealt a decisive blow - a newcomer from Johto, with 16 badges, swept his team with ease. To someone like Red, who had never lost a battle before, it felt like the world had ended. After running away with his tail between his legs, he stumbled upon an old friend, who gave him a letter mentioning a potentially important person to Red. With purpose anew, our protagonist finally descends Route 26, and travels to Johto in search of him.

6IcRpdC.png

Features:

- The game’s difficulty has been made with introducing non-competitive players to competitive tactics, in mind!

- Beta Johto content restored! Caves, routes, and a Town!

- Starters given dual typing (yeah, cliche, I know) almost all competitively “insignificant” mons buffed

- A quick-paced adventure that respects your time! Useful additions to overcome grinding

- Beta mons that got cut, in the form of corresponding later gen mons

- Secret mons for those who care about them

- more than 100 animated portraits!

- remastered and original tracks (stadium 1 and 2, colosseum, HGSS)

- L O R E

Q8B1gtT.png

Red
Once known as the strongest Trainer in the world, Red has been silent for the majority of his life, and most people have taken that for granted - perhaps he is just "le strong silent type", or he's been maintaining that attitude in defense against a world where battling is everyone’s only real job. Despite not showing his face to his friends and family, it looks like the latter are still looking (out) for him. Will he be able to overcome his loss and find the person he's been looking for?

G8OPsUL.png

Blue
A self-proclaimed "travelling merchant", with an obvious tendency for kleptomania, and a sassy and snobby attitude, this girl is wandering Johto with an unknown purpose. She "happens" to run into the gang every now and then, and let's all hope she doesn't get to join.

v1btuhZ.png

Green
The Gym Leader of Viridian, Green seems to have matured a bit after the close-call loss to Red in the Pokemon League, three years prior. His... smelling proclivity hasn't kept him away from trouble - although one could say it's exactly the fact of sniffing out things that's helped him find Red.

2APGKGe.png

Daisy
Green's older sister, and the caretaker of both Red and Green whenever Red's mom was away, she's the cheerful, wise, and strong mentor figure that Red and Green had missed growing up. She is unstoppable during a shopping-spree, and while she loves irony, she's quite tactful when she's with people. Unless that's Red or her brother, whose diapers she's helped change many a times - and that still makes them lil' babies in her view.

Q: Is this game for me?
A: If you like story-driven games with a bit of challenge here and there, then yes. The game is generally for everyone, but will probably be most enjoyed by older fans.

Q: Generation specifics?

A: Evolution: Levelup only for ALL mons no need for trading, stones etc. Gen6 mechanics, No Double Battles(well, mostly), evolutions of Kanto mons, later evos included, but baby mons not included until postgame. Psychic and Fighting types, as well as several Kanto-specific mons do not exist yet. Farfetchd is OP.

Q: Is this game complete?
A: Yes it is. Feedback greatly appreciated!

Q: What is Red's Journey West?
A: In traditional terms the "postgame" but it's an entire new game, a second part to The First Journey, playable after you finish Oak's part.

Feel free to use this version of Kanto in your game as long as you credit JohtoBlaziken and La Pampa (and their associated credit list), goes without saying.

I think i talked around everyone, then went to west, then followed route 1, did I broke the game somehow.😨😨
Unlikely as I have just tested that sequence - can I please see your save so I can help you? You can zip it and upload onto a temporary file hosting site, or dm it on discord. Also, can you please tell me the platform you're playing it on, and your CPU?

Hello, sorry about that, we are trying to find a fix for the issue, though generally, it seems to be affecting older CPUs the most. I have replied to your DM in regards to your savefile.

Version 2.8 is out, mitigating, to a degree, the crash issues:

  • now the game automatically saves after a lot of cutscenes have ended, as to prevent the player from losing progress due to crashing
  • removed emergency saving upon crashing/script hanging (which would save before the event was finished) - now the player can no longer get stuck in unfinished cutscenes if a crash happens.
  • fixed boat not appearing on route 12
  • fixed Route 15s ???s dialogue appearing as Sam's
  • fixed Viridian building tile passability error
  • fixed some trainer battle sprites not corresponding to their OW sprites. Will eventually correct them all in the upcoming updates
  • fixed viridan to route 2 northeasternmost tiles

It is advised that you update.

WinRar is a deprecated program that won't help with some of the newer zip formats. Use 7zip which is free, and you'll have no problem extracting the files to a "normal" folder. If you are still having problems, check your antivirus.

No, no, it's all lies, Sam is a good man, what are you talking about?

Just gen 1 and 2 Pokémon then?
Gen 1 and evos introduced later.

A new update is here, fixing a potential softlocking bug:
-Fixed Softlock in Pallet caused by Pidgeot's Fly
- Added a bike

WHAT A GAME! I've discovered this game from a youtube's gameplay and without watch any videos I thought "Ok, just let's try".
In the beginning it's not an hard game but, on the way to the end, damn! You need to set up your team very carefully with a good type coverage. I suggest you to buy Ryhorn in Fuchsia... He helped me a lot, especially in late game. Overall, it's a well thought and well scripted game: I found no bugs or problems of any type, not an easy game (for example the lack of pokemart and pokecenter but it's okay, still manageable) but I really enjoy it!

Love the idea of this game but it keeps crashing at the first battle in Vermillion. I'm running it on a mac though via Wine. I might just watch the playthroughs on youtube but I feel I'm missing out.

Hi, while some people have been affected by crashes (which the current version that is now out, 3.0 will hopefully mitigate, so make sure you update) running it on Wine might make it worse. In any case try out the new version. However, if you wish to wait to experience the story yourself, you should know that we are migrating the game to a new engine that won't have any problems. Not sure if that engine will be compatible with Mac but I'll notify you anyway.

Version 3.0 is out, please update.
  • Made some minor adjustments that might help with the crashing
  • Refined late-game dialogue
  • Fixed a couple of tiles

I haven't played the game yet, but the idea sounds awesome! I'm always on board for trying to make pokemon's lore better and draw out the potential of pokemon as a concept.
one thing that bothers me about this, though. why is this written like pokemon have only existed I the pokemon world for the last 100 years? Pokemon literally created the world and are older than humanity, so I can't imagine a version of the pokemon world where they haven't coexisted for at least centuries. so people not knowing pokemon can evolve makes as much sense to me as people not knowing that animals can reproduce.
and it's not like the invention of pokeballs made pokemon training possible. it made it more accessible and easier for sure, but couldn't people just tame pokemon, maybe put them on a leash, and hope they don't run away? like people do with real animals?

that said, I haven't played the actual game yet, so maybe this makes more sense than I realize. looking forward to playing it as soon as I get the time!

Hi, and thank you for interest in the game. While the game is part of the PS series, and not technically "Standalone", its overall lore can still stand on its own. Certain decisions have been made in regards to the lore, that might get altered in future versions (mainly due to reception from people who prefer more conventional lore adherence). That said, what you have described is part of the deeper focus of the PS series, and has very significant reasons for being what it is. I would suggest against opening the following spoiler tag before finishing game. So, here's the breakdown:
Beta versions and documents, as well as the overall feeling we get from the gen 1 and 2 games, seems to indicate that Pokemon were meant to be closer to animals than all-powerful beings as portrayed in the very much mythologically driven latest installments. This is mostly due to popularity reasons in Japan, I'd assume.

In any case, the 90s fascination with scientific progress and the artistic tendency to borrow everything from real life (as exemplified by gen 1s multiple references to the real world) has been taken very literally in the PS series. You will already be familiar with the various internet "theories" that have been spreading ever since Pokemon existed as a franchise, regarding animals and whether GF actually had anything coherent to offer lorewise, on their link to Pokemon. The pokedex does reference real world animals, and I'd suggest you watch DYKGs recent beta Pokemon videos to get a good heads up on the matter.

So, the main reasoning behind Pokemon NOT being a truly organic, ancient existence in PS is that various "operatives", like Samuel and Kurt, were sent out to create an infrastructure ranging from education to commerce, in a broader undertaking of "mass change of perception/ anthropological type shift" respective to each cultural/national/etc group in the world. So in "Kanto", and the respective irl country it belongs to, Kurt (and Oak to a lesser extent) did a lot of work to "direct" the appearance, types, and behaviors of Pokemon to seem as if they had always been part of the mythological and cultural heritage of that particular nation. In Kalos, the same thing happened but way earlier.

Every generation born after at least 1970, grew up knowing that Pokemon had "always existed" and the only true "evidence" for this is .... what the Professors had been saying to our mainline protagonists, the Library books and the various "notes" left behind by the League for "trainers" to find (along with items), and the associated myths exaggerated by the various "evil teams". As you can understand from the above implications, and even if you examine almost everything the protagonists of the main games have (in a filtered manner) presented to the player, there has been a lot of "handholding" by the various institutions, the Gym Leader system, the League itself, and the Professors, whose best trainers, the "chosen ones" almost always lack certain family figures - and when they don't, their parents are almost always related to the League (eg Brendans/Mays father).

If you look closely, you'll notice that it's either Professors, or Champions, perpetuating the status of Legendary Pokemon and their deity-like powers. The main protagonists are always extremely strong, and "chosen" by the legendary pokemon (yeah okay, everyone knows why this is a thing from a demographic storytelling perspective and the general anime/manga tropes, but anyway), which should raise some red flags. Why would that be the case? Are the professors playing a bigger role in this? The deviation from the scientific/naturalistic characteristic of the Pokemon games past gen 2 is taken as an example of the very same progress happening after the in-game 90s. So Red, would believe Pokemon to be much closer to animals, while gen 7's protagonist (gen 7 takes place in 2006) would think of them as "entities" that are much closer to semi-religious beings than anything else.

Long story short, Pokemon is a recent phenomenon, artificially plastered all over the world by what appears to be a non-coherent association of people, or multiple organizations, with its very existence intrinsically tied to the infrastructure surrounding the mons (from pokecenters to marts) a huge fascination and "attention" that makes everything revolve around them, and an ever-evolving mythos enriched by, or adapted to, the various cultures it's spread over.

I just finnished the game and from the start i was hooked! I think I played like 7 hours straight yesterday since it was a rainy day after all. I really loved the story and in the end it kinda brought me to tears. Eventhough its not canon ( i think?) due to this game i have so much more respect for Giovanni and Arianna and have a totally new outlook on proff Oak. For me this is what fangames are all about!! Well done creators!!!

The game itself is moderatly hard and i even decided to invest in some EV training.
I didn't really got bothered much by the fact that you dont have alot of healing oppertunities in the beginning. Late game it changes though.
The only thing i could have wished for are a few more chances or opportunities to get pokeballs. Since i always like to have my teammembers with the right nature.

All in all I would personally reccomend everyone who likes story driven games to play this one!!!

p.s.
Mind you. If you're not so much into the lore of the pokemon world and less interested in storyline. This game could be to much 'reading' for some of you.

The game crashes during the first fight when Athena sends out her Flareon.

Nice idea for a game btw. I really enjoyed the first few minutes of story. I dont know if the crash has anything to do with my pc. But its a relatively new one.
