Loved the game!
Really digged the artstyle and really loved the atmosphere and story. Great game, can't wait to play more of it when new chapters get released.
aaaaah I'm so sorry, so I'm going to start off with apologizing for not reading the "lagfix.txt" before playing through the game. So throughout the game I had some major loading times going between maps and out of battles, and I think it did impact my experience a bit, so I'm sorry if parts of this feel a bit negative, I was just tired of the load times after every wild encounter, but it could've been avoided if I had just read the .txt, so that's on me.
First off, massive congratz to the whole team, this is obviously a special game. The art, amazing. The scripting, amazing How do you do those error boxes?!, music , amazing. It is amazing what you bunch have managed to pull off.
However I did find the pacing a bit odd, and I think this is partly due to me getting frustrated with the load times + the game being incomplete, but: It feels like you are forced through an extraordinary amount of wild encounters with not much plot progressing. You go to the general store to get the medicine, but then they send you to the farm (going through wild encounters), you talk to the people at the farm and interact with crops until you do enough wild encounters, then you walk back through wild encounters to find the last oddish by going through a lot of wild encounters in the dark. then back to the farm through encounters, then back home through encounters. Then explore the forest you've already been through, going through encounters, then back up to the farm through encounters, then back home through encounters. The End. And not much story as been given to the player, it is just small tasks of helping out towns people. The mystery of the error dialogue is cool and well mysterious, but it doesn't hold a story itself.
I think a lot of this could be remedied by having the following:
-Repels for sale (maybe they were after a certain point? sorry if I missed it
-Teleporting after completing the key task, having to walk back to the farm after finding the final oddish feels like a slug, and same with walking back home after fighting the parasect.
-The dark room in particular feels like it need to have the encounter rate turned down. And this doesn't matter if you go with teleporting the player after finding the final oddish, but having a match by the oddish to find would be good so that the player doesn't get stuck deep in, having to find their way back without light.
I know that is all pretty negative, but there is lots good about the game too, I liked the dialogue in the general store a lot, it was cute and funny. And speaking of the general store, that shopping interface was cool as heck. Loved the music chosen for the final fight, felt really epic. The game also had a bunch of nicely done animations, and wow that intro! It is actually ground breaking, I've never seen someone go so hard artistically. And the way the errors were done were so clean, I actually don't know how you pulled that off It really was just the pacing that felt off, I can't think of anything else to suggest really. So fantastic job, and just to say once again, this is a very special and unique game, which is exactly what I like to see in game jams.
Even after helping everyone with mushrooms and oddish, this girl still tells me to help
Walkable wall
I couldn't get a proper screenshot, but there is a pokeball here and you can walk over it
The church is walkable, I was actually able to enter the church this way but all the tiles were passable in there so I assume that isn't on purpose
this is one of the best looking fangames I've played in terms of visuals & style, especially cool were the fake error messages that actually messed with me the first time around The story hasn't quite hooked me yet, I sort of thought that some of the meta stuff came out of nowhere without a reason, but seeing as how this is just chapter 1 it might just have not built up yet. & even then it still wasn't like it prevented me from enjoying it but it's definitely interesting enough that, combined with how pretty this game is, I am definitely looking forward to playing more.
Been a while since this came out so I finally cracked and played this game, and... Can I just say I'm desperately hoping you're still working on this, because holy hell the sheer style of this game was something else and I am so very curious about where the story is heading (also love Chingling as the choice of starter. Non standard starters are such a blast, especially when they deviate from the 'usual' Zorua, Eevee and Riolu XD).
Didn't have any bugs or crashes either (had a some moments of panic regarding the error reports coming in and then I remembered to actually read them XD) so... Yeah. Loved it, very much hoping a continuation may someday happen <3
First things first, the art style is absolutely stunning, I can't get over it. I thought it would make my eyes hurt, but I never felt that at any point. I went in blind, didn't read any of the descriptions, (except the content warning, but I kinda forgot about it) and played. Once I remembered, the game gave me that dreadful feeling, kept jumping every time I entered a room and thought something flashed haha. Nearly forgot that the way the battles look was real nice to see, the sprites look so goofy, I love it :D
If this is still being worked on, I'd definitely love to see more
