Introduction:
This fangame is made using RPG Maker XP and Pokémon Essentials v21.1. See full credits list for details.
This fangame is designed as a remake of FireRed/LeafGreen with a lot of additions and revisions.
If you're familiar with my previous project, Pokémon Dustbowl, most of the overall design is the same with Citrus Orange.
This fangame isn't compressed so you can modify your copy to make your own fun with what's been created so far.

In this fangame, you're a typical trainer starting your Pokémon adventure and exploring the world. You meet many helpful people.
As of v0.1.0 the approximate playtime for one playthrough is about seven hours.
I wrote a simple guide that's packaged with the download in case you get lost.
Report any metaphorical bugs you encounter in this fangame in this thread. I've done a lot of testing myself already but there's always more.

Pokémon Citrus Orange is unrelated to Pokémon Orange. Pokémon Orange is a romhack created by PiaCRT.
If you found this thread by accident while looking for Pokémon Orange or Pokémon Orange: Island Walker, here's a couple links:

v0.2.2

v0.2.0 (in case 0.2.1's changes cause you to be stuck)

Changelog:
November 3 2025, v0.1.0 release
December 24 2025, v0.2.0 release! Changelog for v0.2.0:
  • Magma Bomb uses the wrong move function code. Base power is supposed to be up to 80, but instead is 150 because I forgot to make a separate move function code.
  • Cheri berries are available too late. Paralysis starts to appear in Viridian Forest with the rare Pichu encounter, but becomes more prevalent with Mareep on Route 3. I'll replace some of the Chesto berries from Pewter City's innate berry trees (which are there to help against sleep from Team Rocket's trainers using Drowzee and Route 3~Mt. Moon trainers' Jigglypuff) with Cheri berry trees.
  • Easter egg north of the Pewter City museum can produce an error message. This easter egg calls upon a variable and displays a number currently stored in that variable, but that variable is used for a lot of other things so it might contain something that can't be displayed as a number.
  • Added a couple NPCs in Viridian Town's Pokémon Center that explain the rules for capturing during a double encounter. If you're currently inside there, you'll need to stay off the comfy cushions before playing with the updated version of this game or you might get stuck!
  • Flaaffy evolves at level 27 instead of 33.
  • Golbat evolves at level 27 instead of 31.
  • Nuzzle is rebalanced to have more power and PP in exchange for lowering the paralysis chance down to 20%. Frequent paralysis is annoying to deal with.
  • Changed one of the environmental overworld items (eowi) in Turquoise Town from Health Feathers to Muscle Feathers. There was already a Health Feathers eowi there when there's supposed to be one for each stat, and Muscle was missing.
  • Rebalanced some moves that may have been accessible already. This includes Hex, Psycho Cut, Night Slash, Shadow Claw, and Wake-Up Slap + type variants of this move.
  • Reduced valor cost for the tutor moves offered by the karate master in Vermillion City from 30 to 10 per move.
  • Added NPC's that talk about local Pokémon evolution conditions.
  • Removed the speed multiplier effect of the ability Crystal Claws. It causes a hard crash when entering battle. I tried reworking it but that also crashed, so instead I'm restoring the base speed for Sneasel (70 -> 91) and Weavile (97 -> 126) and getting rid of the speed multiplier.
  • Swinub evolves into Piloswine at level 21 instead of 24.
  • Starters evolve into their third stage at level 30 instead of 32.
  • Burn status no longer reduces physical attack if the bearer's ability is Quick Feet.
  • Burn's physical attack penalty is changed from dividing by 2 to 1.5; reduces attack by a third instead of half.
  • Brawls reward 2 valor instead of 1 if your favorite type is fighting.
  • Issues with Bulbasaur, draining moves, and the ability Overdrain for Bulbasaur's evolutions. This is a significant enough issue to warrant releasing a patch before v0.2.0 is ready since Bulbasaur is one of the starters. I'll test to find more issues before making that available.
  • The smashable rocks inside Diglett's Cave are supposed to contain Larvitar, but I mistakenly set it up for Larvitar to be in headbutt trees. There aren't any trees inside Diglett's Cave.
  • Sneasel learns Night Slash instead of Sabotage at level 19.
  • Changed Rhydon's type from ground+rock to rock. The whole Rhyhorn line is supposed to be mono-rock.
  • Increased max PP for Needle Arm from 15 to 20.
  • Murkrow learns Night Slash at level 19 instead of Knock Off.
December 30 2025, 0.2.1 patch:
  • Rematch battles against trainers in the Pokémon Tower cause a crash because I spelled something wrong.
  • Quick Feet doesn't negate the attack penalty from having the burn status. I thought I made it so it does, but apparently not. I can't get this to work and I don't think I'll get help in time before the new year so I'll settle for leaving it as is for now.
  • I forgot to set up the safe zone channeler in the Pokémon Tower to help you skip to the highest safe zone you've achieved.
  • The hiker in the Rock Tunnel mining room doesn't check if you have at least five cards to play.
  • The two water move tutors in Lavender Town compliment your rare psychic-type Pokémon when you show a rare water-type Pokémon.
  • The biker byeah that rides horizontally has a part of his move cycle where he rides vertically.
  • The officer in Lavender Town says the Rocket truck is "headed to either Saffron City." Before that period he's supposed ot say "or Celadon City."
  • At the end of the spooky quest, a certain character instantaneously appeared instead of spookily fading into visibility.
  • The female Team Rocket grunt along the east road in Burgundy Ranch has blue text instead of red.
  • S.S. Anne pirates not rolling their trainer variant correctly. Some were set up to call upon the wrong variable.
  • Hyper Cutter is supposed to grant +10% damage to the user's slicing moves in addition to preventing the user's attack stat from being lowered during battle. I might've forgotten to create this additional effect.
  • Buffs to Smeargle's base stats: +20 HP, +40 defense, +30 special defense.
  • Change the factory/power plant tileset so you can't walk under certain walls. If you're in one of these locations prior to updating your game, either leave the building or avoid standing where you can't fully see your character. I'll intentionally leave the game version before this change available for download in case you get stuck.
  • Encounters from headbutt trees, smashable rocks, and environment-based overworld encounters (eowe) will be 2v1 instead of 1v1 to make it easier for you to catch the Pokémon that pop out of them, and also to match the Sudowoodo/Bonsly weird trees.
  • Improve the accuracy of Thunder Wave and Will-O-Wisp to 100, but lower PP to 10.
  • Rock-type versions of the moves Infestation, Bug Juice Spill, and Bug Juice Blast for Shuckle as signature moves.
  • Shuckle's Bug Juice Blast move is incorrectly named Bug Juice Spill. That's the name of the lower power variation of the move.
  • I forgot to write the effect chance line for Rage so that it raises the user's Attack by 1 stage.
  • One of the Pokémaniacs in the middle part of Route 10 is incorrect when rematched.
  • Changed the Pokémon used by the gamblers on Route 8.
  • Rebalanced base stats for the Hoppip line to reduce speed in exchange for raising both attacking stats a bit.
  • Corrected Yanmega being bug and dragon type. Used to be still bug and flying type.
  • Raised Sneasel's base attack from 65 to 75. Raised Weavile's base attack from 92 to 100.
  • Updated the internal game version setting. I don't think this affects anything but I forgot I left it at 0.1.0.
  • Changed the Route 9 boulder to no longer appear always on top, causing it to float above your head if you approach it from the south.
  • Replaced Smeargle's ability Moody with Mundane: halves the power of foes' psychic and fighting type moves.
  • Talking to the channeler in the safe circle in the Pokémon Tower lobby should offer to transport you up to the highest safe zone whose miniboss you've already defeated.
  • Great Ball seller in Burgundy Ranch now correctly offers the mart merchant handling if your hobby is catching.
  • Great Ball seller in Burgundy Ranch has lower prices: Great Balls are [imath]400 if your hobby is catching,[/imath]800 otherwise. This is down from 500 and 1000.
  • Great Ball price in Lavender Town's mart is [imath]400 if your hobby is catching and[/imath]600 otherwise. This will be true for future marts as well.
  • There's visible black map in the southeast corner of Route 8. There's supposed to be Route 12's water there but I haven't started building that yet. I'll make a placeholder when I complete act 2 in the upcoming v0.3.0 update.
December 31 2025, v0.2.2 patch because there's a mandatory game-stopping error:
  • Fixed which variable is rolled for the pirate at the Vermillion docks. I don't know why this was changed since it used to work correctly.
  • The bird keeper in the east Route 2 transition building will no longer offer the tutor moves Peck and Gust. There's a lass on Route 3 that already gives these tutor moves after defeating her.
  • Changed Pewter City's eowe from Rhyhorn to Bonsly. Rhyhorn is very strong this early on and it's not similar in power with the other two options.
  • Changed the Pokémon inside the Viridian Town gift egg if your favorite type is rock from Bonsly to Rhyhorn.
  • Increased max PP for Mega Drain from 15 to 20.
  • Erased the northward handrail on the museum stairs on the upper floor. If you're standing on the window, use the v0.2.0 download and step down from there, then save and load in the later version.
  • Increased experience value for Blackbelt Dan's Machop line.
Known issues that I'm currently unable to fix:
  • Displayed game title on the window while the game is open. Displayes "Pokémon Essentials v21.1" but it should display "Pokémon Citrus Orange"
  • Sudowoodo animated battle sprite not displaying.
  • Non-crashing error pop-up when an opposing trainer uses Houndoom or Ninetales in a double battle alongside certain other Pokémon. This error doesn't crash the game or prevent you from skipping over it to continue playing normally but is annoying to experience.
  • Using the Lantern in a dark map after you've already used it causes the game to crash. Using it in an area that's not a dark map doesn't crash the game.
  • After you save your game, press F12, and load a different save file, the playtime from the previously active save file overwrites the playtime in your currently saved file.
  • Quick Feet should be exempt from the attack penalty for having the burn status, but it doesn't work.

Highlights of features in this fangame:
First, going through the list of features copied over from Dustbowl:
Limited Pokémon roster. This fangame consists of Pokémon from Kanto, Johto, and their evolutions from later generations.
All individual values (IV) are set to zero for everyone.
Pokémon have one possible ability. There are no secondary or hidden abilities.
Pokémon have rewritten move sets to make sure everything gets useful STAB attacks.
Many changes to the base stats and types of Pokémon. There aren't as many changes compared to Dustbowl.
Trainer battles are all double battles.
Taller grass has 100% chance of double encounters instead of 30%.
The max total effort value (EV) is 500 and the max effort per stat is 200.
Unobstructive tall grass. You don't need to trudge through tall grass to progress through areas. There are still some caves.
There's a recurring book with more detailed information including changes to the type table.
You can rematch trainers for experience.
Level caps.
Some overworld Pokémon you can battle as an encounter.
Developer room that's accessible in-game if you're interested in reading my notes.

Second, new features for Citrus Orange:
Three difficulty settings: easy, normal, hard. Affects level caps and some interactions. Hard mode is considered similar in difficulty with FireRed/LeafGreen.
Nuzlocke guideline information if you're into that sort of thing.
Berry trees. Every route, town, and city has soil for planting berries. They grow quickly and produce up to ten berries per tree.
Tutor.net with groupings of moves based on type or category (biting, punching, etc).
Progress:
This fangame is being developed with three main "acts" for development:
Act 1: Start ~ Vermillion City + S.S. Anne
Act 2: Route 9 ~ Saffron City <- about half of this is available so far
Act 3: Route 16 ~ Viridian City again ~ Pokémon League
Postgame: anything after Pokémon League
Maybe more after this.

v0.2.0 update is here!
See the main post for the full changelog of content that was already available in v0.1.0.

What's new in this update? The first half of "act 2" which starts after the S.S. Anne and ends in Lavender Town + Route 8 including access to the east part of the Underground Path for easier backtracking. There isn't much repeatable content at the end of this update's playable content but it's also the point where you can fully evolve most species obtainable so far in this game.

Merry Christmas!

v0.2.1 patch is here!
See the main post for the full changelog. This patch fixes a few game-crashing mistakes and a bunch of small details.

v0.2.2 patch is here...
I found a game-halting error that didn't used to exist, but must've been created when I was fixing some of the S.S. Anne pirates not rolling their trainer variant. I also made a few small changes. This is an edit instead of a new post because this is starting to feel as if I'm spamming.
