Release
Hello! You can call me Radicalraptr, you may know me from Litharreon, Diamond and Pearl Therian Episode, or even the first ever Relic Castle Game Jam, where I initially released Golurk Rising!

Its been a long time coming - 10 years since the first Relic Castle Game Jam!
One of the games required to achieve the first ever Game Jam badge had seemingly been lost to time when the old site was ported to the new server before Eeveeexpo had taken over.

Despite winning the community showcase, I never felt like this was my best work, and off and on over the years I had tossed around the idea of picking the story back up and doing better. I tried remaking the in ever generation style possible and rewrote expanded revised and tweaked the story in ever way imaginable. However, I never got anything off the ground. I never intended on working on this game until I was approached to upload the game on the new site for posterity but my own pride got in the way, and I instead took it upon myself to remaster the first chapter of the game from the ground up. All the work I had done over the years, all the designs, all the story beats, all the tricks I had learned and all the work that had gone into the engine in the past decade allowed me to release the game in a condition I can feel proud of. And with that in mind, I give you Pokémon Golurk Rising!

Out of respect to the original work and guidelines set by the Game Jam rules, I have uploaded this remastered work without encryption, if anyone wants to poke around and see what I did, or use the GBA screen size for their own works you're more than welcome to.

Plot summary

Welcome to the beginning of the Reckoning. Enjoy the classic Generation 2 style graphics as you embark on a quest to truly be the best, like no one ever has before.

Teamed up with Golett, you will come across many foes, and even a few Pokémon! Some old, some new! With your Pokémon and Golett at your side you'll battle your way to the top!
The game focuses on you and your rival working for the Professor as her Research Assistants. In your first expedition you stumble across an Odd Pokémon and are introduced to the villains of the game, roving bands of hooligans that differentiate their gangs by color.

Travel across Lasai to understand the mystery of your odd discoveries in the ancient ruins scattered throughout the region and stop the schemes of the evil Gang members trying to take over the cities!

There is a myth of an ancient evil. During the Before Times there was an endless cycle of destruction and rebirth. During one of the cycles, the constructs that governed the cycle and its rebirth were devoured. The Old Ones who ruled over the cycle were toppled and the One Who Came Before began the cycle anew. No more destruction. A world where the hunger lives and power is consumed by all. Or at least that is what they say.

Characters

yooooooooooooooooooooooooo a fangame where you tote around what is empirically proven to be my favorite pokemon duo (golett/golurk)?

i'll have to check it out at some point.

Welcome back. Hope to see you again in other game and even if you not making game, please stay healthy

Seeing this come back is like seeing Dinosaurs being resurrected, this is amazing man and I can only hope for more fortune in your journey making this game.
Although I do have some sliiiiight issues.

Those 3 being:
  • No running (although the game does run smoothly and the game moves fast enough to the point that running shoes aren't that 100% necessary so this becomes more like a nitpick)
  • Level jumps, like the levels jumping from 25 to 28 was pretty wack
  • Pretty huge encounter rate, it's quite annoying to go 2 patches of grass and be bombarded with so many pokemon

Other than that, this is an amazing first chapter, and I can't wait for more

Thank you so much for playing!
I never wanted to include running shoes, since it wasn't a gen 2 thing and I could never get the sprites to look right, and while I could just make running shoes available and have it be the same sprite but moving faster, something about that just looked weird. It wouldn't bother most people, or even the average player, but as a developer and personal preference, something about it being the same sprite just moving faster looked off. I did increase the avg move speed to be just under running speed, so I feel that I hit a happy medium. I did take careful consideration with regards to the movement though!

I will say the game was put out fairly last minute, I had a week to work on the game, and the levels were set high because starting at low level like most games around lv 5 would be too slow, and since this is a smaller game in scope to a full 8 gym badge (there are 3 bosses and a final post game boss) a higher level starting felt appropriate. I assumed with the gauntlet you would fight leading up to the boss would be sufficient to get you up to the challenge, and in my personal playthrough, I realized I needed to lower the levels from what I set originally. Certain trainers only have 1 Pokémon , or certain Pokémon are quad or weak to Golett's main moveset and those Pokémon I raised the levels to make them more of a challenge, that and you get the EXP share early on, there is a trainer in the hideout that will battle you infinitely, and there are a handful of Pokémon variety to choose from I felt like it was appropriate! I'll take it under consideration though - one thing is there are a lack of regular trainers to fight or encounter and the path between the second town and the 3rd town is a single map, so expanding the mountain pass and adding in more trainers would definitely help with the curve!

I honestly don't know how encounter rates work in Essentials, I will need to reevaluate and look into that, the encounter rate was kind of the lowest priority compared to everything else, especially since resizing all the menues took so much time and effort and some of them weren't ever finished! The Pokeball you throw out is cut off and I couldn't figure out why lol. The encounter rate is just default essentials, I didn't adjust anything from what is vanilla, I watched a few people play and I agree it can be a bit too high so I'll look into lowering it. I think the distribution of the encounters was about where I wanted it to be, some more rare than others but not impossible to find and the levels had a decent range! If you have any more feedback I would love to hear it. I have a few personal gripes I didn't think of before release such as the reward you get from the hideouts, currently you get 1 set reward from defeating a specific hideout, and a second reward when you defeat the final one whichever that is, meaning if you play a specific way, you beat 1 hideout and get nothing - then defeat the second and get 2 rewards. This has been changed to be 1 each, so when I fix a few other bugs and get around to expanding the map connection between the 2 towns I'll release 1.1 version!

I have updated the links for the 1.1 update! Download it here!
A few things in the changelog are:
Music should now be equalized to 1 central volume
Added an unreal time clock for day/night encounters
Reduced encounter rate
Changed the player backsprites for male and N/A
Fixed the issue with the Pokeballs on the battle screen
Extra maps and more trainers in the Passway
Made changes to map transitions and doors that caused issues with the following pokemon
Added a new evil team encounter before the final hideout
Defeating the hideouts in any order will result in 1 item per defeat
added a few backsprites that were missing
Made minor changes and fixed a few map connection issues or typos

Hello! I started the game a little while a go, and while I havent played much of it, I've been having a lot of fun! It looks gorgeous, I love the "between gbc and gba" aesthetic!

However, since I've updated it to 1.1, I've been encountering a strange glitch:

9ytQTRl.png

When I'm outside, the battleback is always just pure black, no matter where I am (At least where I've played so far).
I don't really know what's causing it.

Also, since I'm here, I just wanted to say that the Pachirisu in the first battle of the game is beyond annoying: In my experience, it just spammed charm and endure, prolonguing the fight way more than it should have.

(One last thing! I saw that the code is free to use, and wanted to know if some battle UI elements could be used too if I were to make a project using this screen style, if not directly then in layout. Sorry if I'm overstepping my boundaries, I've just been really inspired by the game.)

Damn, thanks for the report, that's a little annoying! I was trying to fix the issue of it not showing up the proper battleback, and instead made it show nothing lol. If you wanted to fix it yourself without downloading anything new it's an issue with the map_metadata.txt in PKMN GR2025/PBS/map_metadata.txt. It should be "field" instead of "field_bg"

Really appreciate the kind words! I'm glad the reception has been positive, it's a bit of a passion project and seeing it executed so well and everyone enjoying it makes it worth while!

Pachirisu is fairly easy to defeat despite taking so long, but I might remove one of the 2 moves, I think charm isn't the worst, but endure can be annoying especially if you lost accuracy fighting Poochyena.

And yes, feel free to poke around and use what you want. I prefer the GBA size over the GBC size for a gen 2 aesthetic personally, the GBC size is too cramped and makes it harder to make a modern game, but GBA feels like widescreen. If the project can help you make something of your own, then feel free to use what you want! Just make sure to give proper credits for anything you use!
