Welcome to the celestial land of Tenno! Known for its futuristic technology and advanced space program, the Tenno Region thrives thanks to the ambitions and benevolence of Team Planetary, an organization dedicated to the region's betterment. You start your Pokémon journey in the Tenno Region like many other trainers, but soon you and your childhood friend/rival witness a more sinister side of Team Planetary. They steal property and take Pokémon, all supposedly in the name of saving the region. Can the ends justify the means? As the only witnesses to these heinous acts in a region that idolizes the villains, it’s up to you to stop them while striving to become the Tenno Champion. Blast off on an out-of-this-world journey of astronomical proportions!
sol-version-switch-2-cover-2.png
Pokémon Sol Version is a fan project that aims to create a traditional Pokémon experience using Pokémon Essentials on RPG Maker XP. It is a part of the Cosmic Quest Project, and is technically the "third version" to the hypothetical Luna and Terra Versions. Currently released is a work-in-progress beta test/demo. What's a beta/demo? I explain in detail here. The main campaign is essentially complete and you can play the entire story up until the credits roll, but there is currently no post-game content. That will come in future updates, as discussed here. But, feel free to keep on exploring the region and completing missed optional content until then.

Important Notes
  • This game is in beta and is an unfinished product. While playing, expect to encounter glitches and game crashes. If you do, please report them, as explained in the "Reporting Issues" section below.
  • Due to the chances of encountering a game crash, I recommend saving your game frequently, especially before and after difficult or important battles or after long story events.
  • The game is essentially complete up until the credits roll. That means you can play the entire main story, but there are no post-game elements added yet. Future updates to come.
  • This game is designed to be a traditional and authentic Pokémon experience. It will not contain features common to fan games, such as a speed-up button.
  • This game is designed to play more like the earlier Pokémon games (Gens I through V), rather than the more modern ones. As such, it may require more effort and thought to beat than you might be used to from modern Pokémon games.
  • The game features the classic version of Exp. Share, rather than the modern version which distributes experience among all Pokémon in the party automatically. An Exp. All item, which functions like the modern Exp. Share, does exist in the game, but it is a reward for a side quest that spans the entire region and cannot be obtained until the very end of the game. It is better to think of it as a post-game item.
  • One aspect of real Pokémon games that could not be replicated by this game is interactions with other players. This means it would usually be impossible to evolve Pokémon that require being traded. However, if you want to evolve such a Pokémon, just show a Pokémon that evolves through trade to the woman on the second floor of any Pokémon Center and she'll give you a special item that can evolve these Pokémon instead.
  • Certain aspects of this game may be incompatible with JoiPlay. I have received reports of graphic display issues, random lag, and missing sound effects, all coming from JoiPlay, rather than any specific issue with the game.
  • JoiPlay prevents players from skipping the opening movie. Players using JoiPlay should either delete or rename the folder titled "Movies" within their "Pokémon Sol Version" folder. This will cause the game to automatically skip the movie. This will have to be done every time the game is updated.

Download v0.1.7 Here
(Updated 9/10/25)
No Hotfix Currently Required

If you need help getting things working after downloading from this link, see here for instructions. Once you've downloaded the most recent version, apply the the most recent hotfix (if applicable) as explained below.

Update Instructions: If you've already downloaded an older version of Sol Version and are looking to update, simply delete your outdated "Pokémon Sol Version" folder and download the current version from the above link. Your save data will transfer over automatically.
Hotfix Instructions: If and only if there's a hotfix download link listed below the regular download link, then you'll need to apply the hotfix to Sol Version to play the most up-to-date version. Click the link to download a file called "Game.rgssad" and move that file into your "Pokémon Sol Version" folder. When it asks you if you want to replace the existing file, say yes. Now your game is up to date. You should always try to have to most recent hotfix applied to your game. If you've just installed Sol Version for the first time and a hotfix is available, you should apply the hotfix right away.

Reporting Issues
As this is a work-in-progress beta build of the game, expect to find glitches and other issues. Please report any issues you come across while playing. You can report them here, or send me an email at CosmicQuestProject@gmail.com. As much information as you can provide on the context of the issue, as well as screenshots if possible, is very helpful. If there's an error message, a picture or copy of the exact message would be of great assistance. The game's error log, with a list of all error messages you've received can be located in your file explorer under Users>[Your Name]>AppData>Roaming>Pokémon Sol Version. AppData is only visible if you first click the "View" tab, and then check the box labeled "Hidden Items." From there, you can copy and paste the exact error message, with the newest errors on the bottom. It is my hope that working together we can remove all of the issues that remain undiscovered in this game and we can move it ever closer to a final release.

Known Issues
  • Sometimes when an ability's name displays in battle, it will instead display the name of the Pokémon's other ability. This is a purely visual bug. The proper ability is still activating.
  • Sometimes the game will crash when transitioning from the opening movie to the title screen. If this happens, you can simply relaunch the game and skip the movie to circumvent the crash.
  • A handful of Tenno Pokémon are still a work in progress and do not yet have certain graphics. For a complete list of Pokémon missing some or all of their graphics, see here.
  • Any Mega Evolved Pokémon not listed here is not yet available in the game, even if a Mega Stone is obtainable. The Mega Stone is a placeholder and will not work.

Mystery Gift
Sol Version has a rotation of Mystery Gift distributions. To learn how to unlock the Mystery Gift feature in Sol Version, see here. The currently running Mystery Gift is a special Galapaglobe. This Earth-themed Pokémon has its Hidden Ability, Cold Blooded, as well as Seismic Toss as an event-exclusive move. Only available until October 3rd, 2025!

Hey, I have been enjoying this game so far but I have found a run ending bug. After fighting the first trainer in the Atomos Gym, my character is unable to move at all. I tried a reset but my character is locked in place. Hate to have to stop there but I will be checking back for new updates.

how rare are innate abilities? My starter has 2 abilities, but only 1 of the mons I caught on Route 1 has 2 abilities.

Also, is there a way later on to get 2 abilities on mon that currently only has 1?

Thanks for the report. I'll see if I can replicate it and look into getting fixed. An update should be coming soon.

Pokémon with two abilities is a near universal feature, and Pokémon should typically have two abilities when captured. The only exception is a handful of Pokémon that only have one ability total in their ability pool. Which Pokémon did you catch with only one ability?

Apprentichick and Chipmunch. I have a Chipmunch that has 2 (Run Away and Pickup), but all the other Chipmunch and Apprentichicks I caught on route 1 had "no innate" and then another ability. I have yet to catch an Apprentichick with 2 abilities, in fact.

All the others on the early routes I've caught have had 2 abilities, like Zubat, Cleffa, Geodude, Kittainer, etc.

Huh. That definitely shouldn't be happening. Even a Pokémon saying "no innate" shouldn't be possible, because that's leftover from the plugin I use to enable two abilities, but I don't use the term "innate" in my game. I'll have to see if the same thing happens to me and work from there. Thanks for reporting.

hmm, so I just reloaded and now it isn't happening anymore. Just caught an Apprentichick with two abilities, and another Chipmunch with 2 as well. Just an oddity in game compiling maybe that a close and reopened fixed? No clue honestly, but I guess to those that read this, if you save and close and re-open, it doesn't happen anymore it would seem.

Version 0.1.1 Update

Sol Version is receiving it's first (non-hotfix) minor update. Players over the past few days have been extremely helpful in submitting bug reports for me to fix, and now I've implemented fixes for all of them. Generally speaking, I don't plan on putting out updates this fast, but since this is the release period and a lot of more common issues are being reported, it seemed right to correct them as soon as possible. Here's a look at what changed.

Version 0.1.1 Changelog
  • Fixed a crash upon returning to a Pokémon Center after losing a battle.
  • Fixed a crash when completing Mom's "Souvenir Shopping" side quest.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when advancing Hal's "Server Maintenance" side quest to stage 2, if the player had a full team when first receiving the previous stage's reward.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when saying "No thanks" to buying an item with coins at the Game Corner after viewing the available items or TMs.
  • Fixed a crash when speaking to the bottom Atmos and Celes Cities PokéMart employee.
  • Fixed a bug that caused double battles including certain species of Pokémon to result in an unending flow of error messages.
  • Fixed a soft-lock that would occur if stepping on a certain tile in the Atmos Gym. Anyone who was soft-locked there should now be free to move again.
  • Corrected a typo on the name of a Wepear Berry plant on Route 6, which caused an error when picking it.
  • Fixed a visual bug that caused Turcell and Apprentichick to jump to a different position on the screen after playing their entry animation.
  • Fixed a glitch that caused the story event at Pine's Lab to start over if the player loses a battle during it.
  • Repaired a spot in Kanaveral City that allowed the player to walk past the intended boarders of the map.
  • Removed a minor oversight that turned the player invisible when they read the sign outside the Horizoport Gym.
  • Removed the sound of rapid footsteps while flying or diving with the wingsuit in the Atmos Gym.
  • Added a new background theme to the Mt. Corona summit area, to give it a different music from the cave area.
On top of all that, I've got good news for players using JoiPlay! Up until now, an incompatibility has prevented players using JoiPlay from being able to skip the opening movie. While this project does not officially support JoiPlay, and I cannot promise I'll fix every JoiPlay issue that comes up, I have created a workaround for this one. Any players on JoiPlay should go into the "Pokémon Sol Version" folder and locate the folder inside named "Movies." They can then either delete or rename this folder. I've made a change to the video player that will cause the video to skip if there's no "Movies" folder, rather than crash. It's not an actual solution, but it is a serviceable workaround. Do note that JoiPlay players will have to repeat this step every update, as the updated version will always come with the "Movies" folder.

If you want these issues fixed in your copy of Sol Version, updating is easy. All you have to do is delete your current, outdated "Pokémon Sol Version" folder, and then repeat the initial downloading process from the link in the original post. Your save data will remain intact and be automatically applied to this new version.

I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who's been reporting glitches and other errors. I realize at times it can feel like there's a lot of them in Sol Version, but that's the entire point of running a beta test. Only with your help from these reports can I track down and remove these issues. If you ever encounter any kind of issue, even a minor one, don't hesitate to report it. I may never know it exists if you don't.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I just found a massive and game-breaking error in v0.1.1 that I accidently left in. The download links have been removed until this is fixed. As it is very late in the night for me, this will have to wait until tomorrow. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Huh. Good luck with fixing it, pal. Also, I wanna ask: is there any way to rematch trainers we've previously fought? Like, a VS Seeker or something? Cuz unless there isn't, that'd be a great way to grind experience and money. If not, might as well pick a god and pray that grinding will be successful (currently fighting lvl 13 Dashilisks, since they give about 350 exp)

We're back from emergency maintenance. I decided to stick it out and stay up to get everything up and running again. The download link for v0.1.1 is once again available. If you somehow managed to snag a download before I took down link, I suggest you redownload now for the current version. As I had to redo the update process anyways, I also fixed a rather annoying issue I discovered just after updating with footstep sounds being made in places they shouldn't, such as while surfing or sliding on ice.

Fun Fact: Fixing the game took less than 10 minutes. The rest of process (compiling the game, zipping the game, and uploading the game) all took about 2 hours.

If you're just coming in now, be sure to take a look at my previous post for information on the v0.1.1 update to Sol Version.

Currently there is no way to rematch trainers, but it is a feature I'm considering for a future update.

Can I check if we can get a lucky egg in this game? To help with grinding so to make leveling up faster

Not to dogpile, but would agree that the xp is stingy in this game. It makes it tough to try out all the new cool mons you created! Not to mention all these creative ability combos to be had, it just feels limiting. Like you need to plan stuff out so you aren't wasting tons of time grinding mons that will not be useful long term, or start grinding mons you know will be terrible until you get the stone or to level 60ish (e.g., Larvesta). It is kinda forcing you to pick 2-3 mons early and stick with that core until you get XP share.

Not trying to force you a certain way or stick fingers in your creative process, thankful that there are so many cool people that share their projects with this community in general of course. I am sure this will open up a bit later on, but the early game does feel like that meme with the miner that quits before getting to the gold.

The Lucky Egg is also available through the the Meteoric Hunt quest. The theme of the rewards for that quest is training-based items.

No worries. I can understand why some may not like the way I have things set up. For whatever it's worth, the way I look at this is if you always arrive at the next gym or challenging battle at or over their level, then you're always going to have an easy time beating it. By having some training required, it encourages the player to try to beat challenging battles at the lowest level possible, which makes the battle difficult and adds an aspect to the battle that encourages the player to come up with more creative solutions. Personally, while I was doing my test playthrough, there were only a two or three times in the entire game that I honestly felt I had to grind against random wild Pokémon. The rest of the time I was always somewhat under-leveled, but not so much so that I couldn't win battles.

Regardless, I am taking this feedback into consideration, and will try to think of compromises that don't go too much against my vision.

Guess I can't catch a break. I've just been made aware of another game-breaking bug that prevents story progression past the Planetary Research Station in Versal City. I'll be putting out another hotfix as soon as I can.

That's making a game for ya. Bugs are really like the Hydra: you get rid of one bug, more show up to ruin your mood

Okay, hotfix is out. Here's what changed:
  • Fixed a crash introduced in v0.1.1 that occurs whenever battling a Team Planetary Mecha Suit, preventing story progress in multiple places
  • Fixed the game crashing when encountering a Pokémon in the Park Zone.
  • Repaired the "Send Me a Ring" side quest at the Rest Stop so that it can be completed after finding the lost ring.
If you've updated or downloaded your game in the past 12 hours, I suggest you update again. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Also, given all the feedback I've gotten about the amount of grinding in this game, I've started making plans on how I might find a compromise solution for the issue. I should have something for the next update that will help in that department.

Where's the Soothe Bell at? I'm assuming Pine gives it to you as a reward for the Meteoric Shards? If not, where else? Having it would make grinding friendship evos significantly easier

For once, no, you get it somewhere else. In Versal City there's the Pokémon Fan Club. There you'll find the side quest "My Best Friend," where someone want you to show them a Pokémon you've reached max friendship with. The reward is the Soothe Bell.

Yup, I've found the issue. Guess we'll be getting another hotfix today. However, I have an idea I want to test out to make the process easier for me.

New Hotfix and Hotfix Update System

It's time for day three of hotfixes. But this time, things should be a little easier to update, as I'm experimenting with a new update method. Instead of having to delete and redownload the entire game every time, I now have one file for you to download. All you have to do is download the new hotfix file here. As this is just one single file, the download will be much faster and easier. Once you've downloaded the file, titled "Game.rgssad," drag and drop the file into the "Pokémon Sol Version" folder. You will be warned that there's already an existing file with that name. Just replace the old one with the new one, and your game will be up to date with all the current glitch fixes. Hopefully this makes the update process much more tolerable for both me and you. So long as there doesn't prove to be issues with this method of updating the game, all future hotfixes will use it, and a download link for the most recent hotfix will be located below the primary download link in the original post. This does mean that people downloading the game for the first time will have to download the most recent hotfix separately.

Changelog
  • Fixed an issue where the graphics for the Opti City Gym puzzle weren't displaying properly, effectively making it impossible to complete.
  • Fixed (for a second time) an issue that caused the story event in Pine Labs to repeat from the beginning if the player loss either battle during the event. Apparently some weirdness with the compiler added the issue back after I fixed it last time.
  • Fixed a crash on the "Surprise Inside" side quest when trying to show a Minior to the girl.
  • Fixed a crash on the "I Want Candy" side quest when trying to give the girl a Rage Candy Bar.
  • Fixed the display of Starter Pokéballs on Professor Pine's table, which wouldn't be removed in some situations.
  • Added a sky background to the hot air balloon cutscene when traveling to and from Atmos City.

If all these updates are getting a little annoying, I do apologize. It was never my intention to update this frequently. The problem is that I keep getting reports of various issues that stop progress through the story, and I can't just let issues like that stick around. Fingers crossed that this time we can go a little longer without a big problem. (Which is not to say that you shouldn't report such an issue if you find one.)

Also, there's something I meant to point out earlier, but completely forgot. While this game is meant to be as authentic of a Pokémon game as possible, there is one aspect of real Pokémon games that can't ever be duplicated; Interactions between players, including trading. And that means that certain Pokémon that evolve through trading would be impossible to evolve. In order to circumvent that issue, Sol Version contains a special evolution item that can evolve Pokémon that evolve only through trade. The way to get it is to talk to the woman who would normally let you into the Union Room on the second floor of any Pokémon Center. If you have a Pokémon on your team that evolves through trading when you talk to her, she'll give you one of these items.

How's the leveling/exp in this game? Honestly I don't know why some developers are still holding onto the exp share, at this point exp all pairs better and even helps with accessability. Even when I was a kid I didn't enjoy the round robin of getting each pokemon levelled up and usually ended up with two or three mains and that's all the way back to Pokemon yellow. As an adult I want to enjoy the story, challenging battles/etc but I just don't have the time to be grinding/scrounging around for exp. Then to possibly see another Pokemon id be interested in to pick up but have to now train, pair that with ADHD it's just hard to want to bother. Il even take the audino trainers. I mean plenty of fan games/rom hacks have used different methods to ease the grind, I enjoy Tectonic for example. But to have Exp all at the end(near) of the game? What's the point? And honestly if the quest takes up throughout the whole map and exp.all seems like a sub reward.
