Released Stygian Snakewood, a Pokémon Snakewood Remake.

This project has a release available. The full version is still a work in progress.
Project Status
Released
Project Version
0.5.2
- Made with Essentials 20.1 -
Disclaimer: This project has no affiliation with Pokémon Snakewood made by Cutlerine and it's but a tribute to the original work, it intends in no way or form to replace it but to build upon and expand.

Hoenn has been invaded by a zombie plague! Revive the experience of the iconic 2010 ROM Hack by Cutlerine once again as you are the younger sibling of Brendan, who woke up without memory on a devastated region, trying to find the whereabouts of their brother and the origin of the zombie outbreak with the help of Professor Birch while meeting an almost unrecognizable Hoenn, facing zombies, new characters and uncharacteristic humor!

Features

Update for the zombie Pokémon: Many zombie Pokémon are available for the player from the previous only two, furthermore many have also been added from many media such as XtraSnakewood, Snakewood DX, RetroNC's video and our own zombies! Furthermore you can only catch one using a previously unused item, the Necro Ball. Zombie Pokémon are powerful but be careful with your choices as Necro Balls are hard to come by.
High Difficulty: For those who want a challenge, the game has a considerably higher difficulty that was carefully worked to be as fair and competitive as possible, both with trainer battles and a few AI tweaks (Vanilla mode also available! Hopefully more fair than the original game, I think).
A new type, Plague: Derived from the original Disease-type of Pokémon Snakewood (renamed due to UI issues), its main feature is that they do more damage, but are unable to switch (might change in the future)! Plague is also followed by a new weather, Soot.
Pokémon rebalancing: While there are still power differences between Pokémon and some are mostly a second thought after the early game, we've made sure that even if it's specific niche, every single one of our >360 Pokémon have something unique to them, while not bloating the game nor deviating much from the original version.
Lack of grinding: EVs and IVs have been removed, furthermore DemICE's EXP gain system enables for a fast and smooth level curve without requiring level caps (considerable increase/decrease in EXP based on the level difference between the opponent. The game has been adjusted accordingly to all those features. You're encouraged to have a lot of Pokémon early!
Increased exploration: While not required, the player is often rewarded for not going on a straight line, maybe check that rock or behind the tree, a surprise may wait for you!
Ability changes: Giving love to some irrelevant abilities, Stall now skips every other turn, Sand Veil increases Defense during Sandstorm while Damp sets Water Sport on entry!
Graphic overhaul: Most original Fakémon and characters have been redesigned in order to have a more modern look while trying to retain the silly core Snakewood essence, not everything was redesigned though, some familiar faces are unchanged and have (hopefully) just received a higher quality sprite.
Limited resources: (SUBJECT TO CHANGE) One complain of the original Snakewood was how it didn't feel enough like a dystopian scenario. Your decisions matter, use your consumables wisely.
New stuff: As mentioned before, Stygian Snakewood gives it a more modern look to the original game and such adds countless new features such as QoL, physical/special split, Fairy-type, new Zombies, new evolutions for some regular and fake Pokémon and Pokémon that weren't previously available in the original game. And as a bonus, certain unused Pokémon like Demoneon, Toxeon, Crazymadio and Zombified have sprites, regional forms have been added that kinda fit the game i know regional forms are overdone at this point but it wasn't me that came up with them and they look good so take it and a few secrets!

Q: Is there/will there be a Discord Server?
A: Nope. Well, I've heard and experienced horror stories from Fangame Discord servers that my friends own and it's the kind of thing I wouldn't really want to deal with. So unless someone is willing to manage it themselves we will not have a server.

Q: Will I be able to catch "a/b/c"
A: Our plans is to make every single Pokémon obtainable, including zombies and others that were unavailable in the original game such as Boilbasaur and Mutagon. However some things need to be kept in mind, due to balance reasons Pokémon such as A Monster and Stitched will be very late while zombies can only be caught using the previously unavailable item Necro Ball, which is limited in its availability.

Q: Will it be compatible with Joiplay?
A: I have absolutely no idea. It's not my area of expertise and we will most likely not offer support for it themselves.

Q: What's up with the inconsistency? Why is X sprite different from Y sprite? Why does A have a new design and B doesn't? Why is Z missing?
A: It's a work-in-progress with a few artists working in (that my dumbass is too awkward to properly introduce to each other) with different styles + my own stuff that I gotta admit ain't the best.

Q: Is this game meant to be completed with a challenge run (ex. Nuzlocke or Monotype)? Could you make it so? What about Lunatic mode?
A: Stygian Snakewood (Mostly Lunatic Mode) is not designed around the player following Nuzlocke rules and restrictions, meaning many of these types of challenges are likely impossible. I did not balance the game around extra rulesets and no changes will be made to accommodate them. Be free to either try them in the Vanilla difficulty or prove me wrong, I would love to see it!

Q: What the hell happened Wurmple? How does its evolution work now?
A: Read the sign in the south part of Route 104 then check Wurmple's name in other languages. Wurmple also now evolves based on Day (Silcoon/Beautifly) or Night (Cascoon/Dustox).

Q: What is Plague's type chart?
A: It's super-effective against things considered alive (Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Grass) and Psychic, it's weak to Bug, Poison and Psychic and it's resisted by Ghost, Steel and Ice (depending on feedback, might make it so that Fire also resists Plague)

Disclaimer: Credits might not reflect the final version and are subject to change. If any of the current features or screenshots shown contain any stuff that you believe it's yours and has no credit, please contact ASAP me on Discord #aaleven.

It's here. After a lot of procrastination and real life issues, The first Stygian Snakewood demo has been officially released!

This demo goes up to Sage Longwei in the Shakya Monastery (around level 38) and about half of the evolution lines are available to the player. (I was going to list the total hours but I suck at that so no). Reminder to read the FAQ on this thread and the DOCUMENTATION folder in the game folder (also Q is for Speed Up, it stacks up to 5 times)

Link: https://mega.nz/file/XOxg1RbJ#UzBkA1t4lROv9B5ASqpPjdaVO1pSUM6iqMbzrQGqw-s

  • A lot of sprites are inconsistent or have placeholders, one major story trainer has no battle sprite whatsoever.
  • You can landsurf in quite a lot of areas
  • The female character has a few missing sprites.
  • Cutscene characters may behave weirdly.
  • Some maps have exposed void. It's not my fault, I grabbed a sketchy map pack and it was all over the place.

Also some things that I want to add to the game in the future (that are NOT in the game yet)
  • Third, androgynous protagonist (might age them up to 18)
  • Every single thing with a redesign (except most trainer classes, they will just be updated)
  • More devs
  • Fix every single map that is a bit bad.
  • Maybe some custom or remixed soundtracks.

And as I mentioned in the main thread: Credits might not reflect the final version and are subject to change. If any of the current features or screenshots shown contain any stuff that you believe it's yours and has no credit, please contact ASAP me on Discord #aaleven.

Although there is a thing I wanted to say: Stygian Snakewood might not be for everyone.
It's kinda gotten a complicated history, first it started as kinda like a "Kaizo" or "Hardcore" enhanced version the original Snakewood, as a minor edit of the binary ROM hack, then I tried to expand further on it but a Ruby edit from 2010 isn't exactly the most stable or easy to use so I had migrated to a decomp hack, after a while I was making little progress because I honestly had no idea how to use decomp so I migrated to Essentials, I had changed its version like 5 times and remade it once or twice. It was never intended to be a remake of the original Snakewood, only a little thing I would've shared with my friends, but as I got more and more annoyed by the limitations of it and the more I tried to change stuff it kinda became a remake, specially after I got a redesign for almost every single Fakémon and character. The problem was, it was still only supposed to be a mod of Snakewood originally, a lot of the gameplay was built around that, hell, the Vanilla mode was only added very late into development. It went way too fast from something to that was supposed to only be a few balance and battle changes to a full blown revamp of the game and it wasn't a smooth transition.

TLDR: Due to its origins as a "kaizo-like", Stygian Snakewood has some unique gameplay experiences that may or may not be someone's cup of tea.

Also some projects worth keeping in mind in the future in case you're interested in more Snakewood content and you turn out to not be a fan of Stygian Snakewood:

Snakewood DX that was used for TwitchPlaysPokémon;

Snakewood: Rebirth or something that was on Twitter;

Pokémon Snakewood Remade or something I think it was on Reddit

# NEW PATCH 0.5.3

- Vanilla has been renamed to Normal. It's probably too far away from the original game to be considered Vanilla.

- Normal mode has been somewhat nerfed up to Laura (Normal-type trainer). Minor changes here and there could be done as well.

- A certain Pokémon line has been adjusted, this could be seen as a nerf to an infamous fight.

- Zombie trainers now have more a diverse roster of undead Pokémon.

- Fixed a bug that allowed you to skip Zabulon.

- Minor dialogue changes and flavour text (also foreshadowing).

- Growlithe's sprite has been fixed.

- Slightly updated Roteen sprite.

The dev blog I promised but that I never actually delivered is here yay!

First of all, thanks for all the support on the first demo even with all the struggles. I'm honestly quite surprised so many people saw this thread and how many people played it in their channels, I know it wasn't very polished (trust me when I say this, during beta testing it was a lot worse, it wasn't the lack of beta testing but instead the sheer amount of problems)

But what does the future bring to Stygian Snakewood? Well, for one the next update (0.6) intends to improve a lot of what was lacking in the original demo such as designs, inconsistencies and specially the maps. One thing that deserves mention is the "Zombie Redesign Project", basically a way to rework many of the old designs both from the original Snakewood and from other sources such as XtraSnakewood and Snakewood DX in order to give them a more interesting look, specially since a thing that I slowly started to realize: Do all of the "zombies" need to be zombies? Such way would be quite limiting so we've decided to expand upon and beyond the concept of zombie, exploring stuff such as other pieces of modern culture and myths, creating more of a Halloween experience than anything really. And someone that was essential to it was our new spriter, Raffs (also a sprite of his that I couldn't fit with anything else so it is there)!
1731370653950-png.168187
1731370646000-png.168186
1731370668180-png.168188

Zombie Electabuzz I had the idea to be based on Frankenstein's monster and other chimeric monsters due to a previous old sprite of mine for a zombie Electivire based on such thing. And "zombie" Clefable based on Gargoyles, the idea wasn't mine, coming from another Snakewood project but which had a rather... underwhelming sprite that didn't make it justice. Then at least some protag redesigns. The ponytail on the male protagonist may have come from nowhere but he wanted it and I didn't mind the idea. But the female sprite had quite a heavier change with a blue and longer hair, intending to resemble more the original female protagonist from Snakewood (reminder just in case I aged up the protagonists from 16 to 18 as it was getting a bit weird to me).
Of course, it's not going to be some .5 update or whatnot, it's intended to add content as well, not as much as the release demo but enough to feel like meaningful project. Currently the plan is for it to go up to Route 119 and the Security Vault (previously Weather Institute), going on with content such as the final Alicia battle, Fallabor and the second S.S Cangrejo visit along the way but anyway here are the images.

1. Yes, the infamous Wattson battle is somewhat back. You can even get a reward for beating him (and before you ask I disabled both Exp gain and Money gain on victory)!
2. Final place in the demo, the visibility is a bit bad though so I might change it. it also features more of the female protagonist.
3. Funny puzzle to get either Lileep or Anorith. I suck at these so I hope it looks good.
4. Just a battle image, showing stuff such as a custom Claydol shiny (you might recognize where it is from) as well as my takes on Zombie Venusaur and Zombie Blastoise
5. Obtaining the Maw Fakemon owned by Asimov. Fun fact the origin of it is that when I was looking at the Snakewood data and I saw that for some reason Sneasel replaced Mawile, even though Sneasel wasn't a new Pokémon, when I looked at Sneasel's slot there was a second Sneasel with the name of "Maw". So I had the idea to make it so that it was a fusion of both in a unholy mess.
6. ???

Anyway, reminder that any screenshots here are subject to change but be free to give feedback on the game overall and these changes for it is of utmost importance! Also, we are recruiting! Look for the Recruitment Section on this respective forum for more info.
