Can you handle the cutthroat and perilous trials set forth by the judges?
This is IRON MAPPER: Relic Castle's mapping competition!

Trial II. Mountain Map

Deadline: Monday, May 29th 2017
RESULTS
SEASON 3 DISCUSSION THREAD

Iron Mapper
Iron Mapper is a mapping competition on Relic Castle. Each mapping competition, otherwise known as a "trial", will have a deadline clearly stated, and you will have this time to complete and submit a map according to the theme and criteria of the trial. Once all submitted maps are judged after the deadline (this depends on the volume of entries, usually a few days), the judges will post the results, and prepare for the next trial.

For more information (overall rules, how judging works, a list of trials) please visit this thread.

Trial II. Mountain Map
Deadline: Monday, May 29th 2017

Ah, mountains. Everyone seems to hate mapping mountains. Naturally, every trial would be about mountains if we could have our way, but our sponsors would cut our funding. Pity. Either way, your task for this trial is to make a map that involves at least one mountain. You could even have more than one if you so desire. It's entirely up to you!

Good luck!

The following criteria must be met:
  • Your map can be made with any tileset you want provided the tiles are public. You must include credits for the tiles with your submission if they aren't your own.
  • Your map cannot exceed 90x90 tiles.

Your judges for this trial are:
@Deo
@Atomic Reactor

A tip from the judges:
"Having a different tile for traversable areas can help break up repetitive textures on a mountain."

Notes: I decided to do something a little different, so instead of making a mountain, I made a mountain town. I don't know if it fits the theme enough, but I think the concepts are still similar. Anyways, this mountain town has a gym, many houses (some of which are inaccessible) and the usual mart/PC. It's my first trial, so I'm not expecting anything big.

This is the first map I've done in 6 months! Hopefully I haven't lost my touch...

Critique Requested: Yes, please!
Credits: Default Gen 3 tiles included in Essentials.
Notes: After beating the 4th gym leader, you take a boat ride from a harbor town onto this route to continue foward on your journey! You start off at the bottom and work your way up the mountain battling trainers and continue left which leads to Route 8 while making a turn leads you into a cave you can explore. On the bottom part of the map, you can find some hidden items!

Critique Requested: i actually like how this one came out so sure, why not

Credits: spikyearedpichu's DS Map Editor for some of the textures (it gets complicated after that), again

Notes: I basically just started dragging things around in Voxelish and somehow ended up on either a meteor crater or a volcanic crator, it's up to you. either way, it's long dead and the middle's filled up with rain water. I like the idea, sort of like Mt. Chimney in Hoenn, I guess, and actually want to use an area like this in a real live game now. Needs a bit if work though, like mountain flowers (which I completely forgot about) and probably a larger area since, come on, 256x256 is way more interesting than 90x90.

Also discovered a failure in my little tool set that ended up being a real pain when it came to reshaping some of the upper parts of the map. Grr.

Also also I cheated again, it's 96x96 instead of 90x90.

Credits: Spherical Ice for the mountain and rock climbing tiles. The rest are in the stock Essentials.
Notes: The Mountain lives on its own little island just south of Kanto. Trainers travel there to battle and capture the strong Rock types that live on its slopes. There are some cave systems to get up the mountain or a rock climbing route to take as a shortcut. It is unknown who built the shrine.

Also, I know we don't need to give tiles away but I may as well. Give credit to Spherical Ice for the mountain tiles. The flowers and grassy rocks were edited by myself.

Notes: Included some NPCs in this one, four of them are intended to be trainers while the one in the top-left isn't and maybe gives you an item or gives some info or something like that. The cave entrance on the bottom of the map isn't intended to lead you to a separate map. It's a small tunnel to allow the player to move underneath before coming out the entrance on the other side, like there's a bridge above. The other cave entrances would lead to other maps as normal.

Had fun with this challenge, I'm not usually much good with mountainous terrain so I'm glad at how this turned out.

Notes: Wow! I'm really glad how this came out. So, what should I say? This is the longest path in the region, and the player starts at the bottom of the map, after going through a long forest. Then, the player has to traverse one of the highest points in the entire Pokémon world, Mt. Nyperees, and it's mazy caves. Mt. Nyperees is really difficult to hike, and one of the reasons for that is because people can't climb it using the widely known HM Rock Climb. It is also home to many strong and aggressive Pokémon. At it's peak is the legendary Dragon's Village, once a beautiful city, now in ruins. I wish I could have had more tiles to make the map even bigger, but it's already at the limit, 90x90! Oh, also, it's said many legendary Pokémon inhabit Mt. Nyperees; hence the whirlpools, dive spots, cave behind waterfall, etc, etc.

Notes: This is what happens when someone who sucks at anything even a little bit related to graphics makes a map. The small "route" is especially bad, in my opinion. The house/laboratory/whatever is supposed to be a research/mining/museum facility for the many fossils found within the mountain caves. Some claim to have seen a mythical creature atop the holy mountain, which is supposed to grow steeper as you get higher.

Ahhhh I haven't mapped in well over a year. Hope I didn't lose all skill I had

Map Name: Nievalta Mountain
Trial: Trial II: Mountain Map
Critique Requested: Yea sure
Credits: Default Essentials tileset
Notes: Supposed to be a mountain road which leads to an icy peak. The insides of the caves are filled with puzzles and mazes that lead you to the top of the mountain. Nievalta is a mix of the Spanish words for "Snow" and "High"

Notes: I tried my hardest to come up with a unique idea that wasn't just another mountain map so I took an anime-exclusive location and mapped it. Metagross Mountain is from the Diamond & Pearl series, episode 117; Noodles! Roamin' Off! which is an almost entirely Team Rocket followed plot where they all split up to aspire their own dreams leaving James alone. In hopes to get Jessie and Meowth back he goes to capture the different colored Metagross he heard rumors of while spying on the 'twerps'. If you don't want to watch the episode, south of the mountain is a town famous for their noodles. I didn't have room to map said town so I just included the two stands.

Notes: I really entoy doing this map. There aren't any event yet but I think that it looks good. There is a principal rute (at the center, after you get out from the cave), you have to go around the center crater, and to the end of the rute, you have three alternatives ways (this give you some free time).

I'm mainly using the Game Boy Advance - Pokemon Emerald - Exterior Tileset by Heartlessdragoon.
I altered it a little though (turned tiles, made some parts transparent and imported the pokeball and rocksmash rock from Pokemon Essentials)
the map is made in RPG maker XP with Pokemon Essentials
Pokemon essentials is created by Poccil, based on Flameguru's Pokémon Starter Kit and managed and updated by Maruno
not to forget Nintendo, Game Freak and the Pokémon Company who have the copyrights for the Pokémon Emerald tileset
Notes:
I tried making the map in a route style that could actually be part of a 3rd gen Pokémon game. I really want to know how I did, for I just started making Pokémon games and some critique from experienced people would be really appreciated.
Plus I don't know how to properly include images ... so sorry for the link ...

Notes: The first time the player comes up here, they're coming from the south and exit in front of the grunts. The grunts prevent them from passing that way, and attack when they approach from the other side. After those battles, an NPC appears and leads them to the top where there's a villain team boss encounter followed by the version legend fight. In the postgame, the player can return here to catch Solgaleo and Lunala depending on the time of day.

Made in Tiled, 3 layers. I now know why people hate mapping mountains.

Notes:
The foot of the only "real" mountain residing in my yet-to-be-named region.

The bigger cave entrance leads to a natural tunnel, which eventually branches off into the Victory Road.

Some of the areas are gated off by Rock Climb, which is one of the later HM:s - the goal here is to encourage back-tracking later on to explore the old cave labyrinths for some juicy lore and other rewarding experiences. The house is home to an older man who tells the player some hints regarding this, which hopefully will pique the interest of the player to come back later.

Notes: This took me about 3 times longer than it should have because I recently fractured my finger and I couldn't map. Luckily I had finished most of the map before hand and just needed to add some finale touches. The map could probably do with some more touch ups but I know if I didn't do it when I did, I would've forgotten.

Also this is the link to the tileset I complied for the Iron Mapper events.

Critique Requested: Please, it's the main reason why I participate. =)

Notes: So yeah, lots of ideas, little time to implement them. In the end, I figured it'd be for the best to keep things simple. As you probably could've guessed, the map's entrance is in the south, gradually climbing upwards as you venture north. Though the route itself isn't particularly challenging, there's a serious challenge present at the northern end. One of my main focus points of the map was to minimize the "cramped" feeling while you'd traverse this map, even with such minimal space for exploring. I liked the results, I hope hear y'all's opinions! =)

I guess it kinda symbolizes my comeback, (you get it, Comeback Pass?), starting of slowly, with hopefully a whole new region worth off maps to be published near the end.
