Pokemon Bonfire Stories is about a group of friends having a night out and trying to spook each other with some creepy storytelling. It doesn't matter much what order you play the stories in, as nothing carries over between them except TMs. If you're going for completion based on collecting all the TMs, there is a text file included to tell you which ones are in each story; it doesn't tell you where to find them though! One last note: you can only play each story once. You'll have to start a new game if you want to go back or play in a different order.

Here is the latest version of Bonfire Stories!
Not sure if you're up to date? The newest version says 4 STORIES on the titlescreen.

Features:
  • Four original stories to play though!
  • Play the stories in any order you choose!
  • Multiple protagonists to play with!
  • TMs to collect in use in other stories!
  • No need to choose starters or grind through any early game annoyances. Jump into the lives of established trainers!
  • Dev feature: The files are open for you to look at and mess around with, and I encourage you to create your own stories if you're interested

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Why won't my emulator run this game? What emulator do I need?
A:
This isn't a hacked game. It's made with RMXP, so no emulator needed!

Q: Can I play this on mobile? Can I play on a Mac?
A:
For mobile you can try JoiPlay, but I haven't tested it myself. For Mac, I believe there's something called Wine? Sorry, the game really works best on PC.

Q: You allways add special cheat code names so what are they?
A:
I didn't really add any this time! Since each story is completely separate, any special gifts would quickly be lost before you could use them. There might be some special greetings, but the only special names really are the storyteller character's names being banned as player names.

Q: Can I rip or take stuff from this game?
A:
No. The game isn't compressed because I'd like to let others add their own stories if they want. It is not an invitation to rip any resources from the files, as they're not all mine. This game was made for a game jam though, and one of the rules of the jam was that any resources I made for the game became public, so here's some free stuff you can use in your own projects. You don't have to credit me for any of these.

Q: So I can edit this game to add my own stories?
A:
Yes! If you took the time to develop a whole new story for the game, I would be glad to release an official update including it. Please don't re-release it yourself! If everyone did that there'd be several incomplete versions floating around instead of 1 game with all the content!

This game was made in one month for the Relic Castle Game Jam 2016, by Aki.

Heck, I hope a double-post isn't a problem, but I didn't want to wait too long after I played to talk about the new features I enjoyed!
Am I correct in thinking you made custom sound effects for this version? Menu, click, save, etc seem to be original, on top of the new sound effects like walking through grass. It's all such a great touch!

A Mew named You is such a perfect easter egg!

Celebi moved so smoothly in its loop, it turned out really nicely! (And really drove home the idea of Celebi being above the laws of reality!)

Boss as a Yanmask was a seriously brilliant twist, I never expected it! (I was a bit sad that defeating Celebi resulted in the same timeline as catching it, but it makes sense-the "good timeline" wouldn't really be spooky)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked all those details!

About the custom sounds, they're not actually custom! I just replaced some of the v17 echo-y sound effects with different rips, I think HGSS ones. I looove having a walking on grass sound, I can't believe how much of a difference it makes.

Man I really wanted to include more endings since there could be any combination of defeating/capturing/losing to Celebi and winning/losing against Ellie, but yeah, I got caught on the idea that I'd want them all to be "bad" endings with spookish tones (I think Destiny is one of the less spooky stories in the first place) and that I wouldn't want to add more gameplay to one of the endings, implying it's the correct choice...hm, maybe I can work some kind of ending with Looker and the officers in the next patch.

It took me a while, but I finally got around to playing Bonfire Stories, and man, was it something. This is so unique and pretty, and the stories are so interesting with twists and turns here and there. There were a few glitches and bugs, but nothing that ruined my fun, it didn't really take much away from the game.

My favourite story by far was "Flashing Lights". It was so interesting and it built up this feeling of unease within me. It reminded me a lot of a book I read when I was younger called "The Watertower" by Gary Crew. And it was nice remember those sorts of interesting stories from when I way younger.

Something I think that is really a testimony to your story telling is how all the stories give off a different atmosphere, and yet they all succeed to tell a spooky story, with maybe the exception of "Destiny" where the spookiness only kicked in towards the end, but it still told an interesting story.

This is really something to be proud of and it is so enjoyable, some parts are a bit challenging, but it doesn't take long to play, so to anyone on the fence about playing this game, just give it a shot. Because the nature of the game you don't even need to play it all once which is great imo.

I also really encourage creators to add their own stories to this game, I think it would really be amazing to see many developers collaborate with this game.

EDIT: Quick edit because I forgot to comment on a few things I wanted to.
"The Changeling" story was very cool, I liked the idea of it, and it kinda made me want to side with the 'bad guys'. Although I don't think what they were doing was right.
"Duplicate", that was a very spooky one, the atmosphere that was built up was done and executed so well, combined with that spooky ending, oh man.
Throughout the game, choice of music was pretty good, especially when around the bonfire and in "Duplicate".

Just found a rather serious bug:
In the story with the haunted mansion and the lost girl, if you lose to A Ditto Maybe? and talk to them to challenge them again, you end up getting stuck as the game tries to make you walk through a bookshelf.
Aside from that I really enjoyed the game so far! Might give a more in-depth review when (or rather, if) I manage to finish it.
