Extract the game files into a new folder rather than overwriting the old files. You can then delete the old files.

After updating the game version, your updated save file will be incompatible with previous versions of the game. Always play on the latest version of the game, and create a backup of your save file (usually at "C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Roaming\Pokemon Zero\Game.rxdata" or, for older versions, "C:\Users\[your name]\Saved Games\Pokemon Zero\Game.rxdata") if you are unsure about updating.

Changelog
0.13.1 — 2023-08-06
  • Fixed: Fixed a bug that caused the game to crash when using a PP Up or PP Max, or when using a Rare Candy on a level 100 Pokémon.

0.13 — 2023-07-27
  • Added: Gym Leader rematches are now available. Simply speak to a Gym Leader after defeating them to rematch one of their teams. More teams are unlocked as you acquire Badges and Gym Leaders may initially face you with one of their more powerful teams if you fight them later than usual. Gym Leaders can be fought in any order except for Giovanni, who must be fought last. Giovanni cannot be rematched at this time.
  • Added: The version of mkxp-z that Pokémon Zero uses has been updated, resulting in large performances increases, especially when using the speed-up feature or in busy locations.
  • Added: You can now access your Pokémon Boxes from almost anywhere using the Boxes option on the menu. Be aware that boxed Pokémon are not automatically healed upon capture but are healed when visiting a Pokémon Center. The adviser at the Pokémon League will inform you that you cannot access your Boxes when challenging the Elite Four.
  • Added: You can now sort your Bag pockets by type or name (or number for TMs). The option to sort will appear when you select any item in your Bag. Now you can tidy up your pockets instantly!
  • Added: Another teleporter will now appear in Sabrina's Gym after you have defeated her, so that you can quickly return for rematches.
  • Changed: The Bag pocket order has been rearranged to match later generations.
  • Changed: The Itemfinder has been renamed to the Dowsing Machine to match later generations.
  • Changed: Mina's team will change depending on the number of Badges the player has and how many times they have beaten the Elite Four.
  • Fixed: Mina will now correctly battle the player daily, resetting at midnight, instead of after each defeat of the Elite Four.
  • Fixed: Ability Capsules and Ability Patches now appear in the Items pocket rather than the Medicine pocket. Honey now appears in the Treasures pocket.
  • Fixed: Corrected the Treasures pocket icon which appears when obtaining an item belonging to that pocket.
  • Fixed: Transistor's damage multipler is now 1.3, down from 1.5.
  • Fixed: Fixed a number of sound effects not playing when interacting with the Pokémon Box.
  • Fixed: Fixed a bug that caused weather and terrain Ability splashes to disappear too quickly.
  • Fixed: The Exp. Charm is now named correctly.
  • Fixed: Corrected some text formatting.
  • Fixed: Corrected some out-of-bounds water tiles on Treasure Beach.
  • Removed: The Item Storage System has been removed in line with later generations, since the Bag has enough storage space for all items. Any item in the Item Storage System will be automatically placed in the player's Bag. The player can interact with the PC in their bedroom to receive the game's starting Potion, however.
  • Removed: Now that the Item Storage System has been removed and Pokémon Boxes can be accessed from anywhere, all PCs except for the one in the player's bedroom have been removed from the game.

0.12 — 2023-07-21
  • Added: Almost all non-Legendary Pokémon from Generation I—IV are now obtainable within Kanto, including any Pokémon related to them by evolution. This brings the total number of Pokémon in the Kanto Pokédex to 486.
  • Added: Mr. Hyper now resides in the Pokémon Day Care on Route 5 and offers Hyper Training for Pokémon at level 50 or above in exchange for Bottle Caps. The player can now buy Bottle Caps on 4F of the Celadon Department Store for $20,000 after earning 6 Badges, or from the Trainer Tower for 4 BP, in addition to the previous method of defeating Mina in Vermilion City.
  • Added: Similar to Generation IX, a large number of items are now available for purchase at the Celadon Department Store depending on the number of Badges obtained, including the Power items, Mint items (after 6 Badges) and PP Ups and Ability Capsules (in the post-game). A few items such as Evolution stones and vitamins are now only available for purchase after obtaining 3 Badges. More items are also available for purchase at the Trainer Tower using Battle Points, including Oval Stones, Razor Claws and Razor Fangs.
  • Added: After rescuing Mr. Fuji, a Spiritomb encounter will occur if the player returns to the top of the Pokémon Tower.
  • Added: A few Rock Smash rocks were added to Mt. Moon so that Nosepass can be caught.
  • Changed: Tweaked the items available at Poké Marts to be more in line with Generation IX but with the inclusion of Repels. In particular, Repels are now available immediately, which can help with passage through Viridian Forest or Mt. Moon. Many different Poké Balls can now be bought at standard Poké Marts depending on the number of Badges obtained, while the rarer Apricot Balls are now available—albeit at a high price—from the Celadon Department Store.
  • Changed: Many items at the Trainer Tower have had their BP cost reduced to be more in line with their regular purchase price.
  • Changed: All items have had their buy and sell values updated to match the latest mainline games they appeared in.
  • Changed: Some of the items available as prizes in the Celadon Game Corner have been changed, now that many of those items are available to buy in the Celadon Department Store. The Celadon Game Corner now offers the five Flute items as prizes instead, which cannot be found elsewhere.
  • Changed: Following trends in the latest generations, the Items pocket in the Bag has been renamed to Other Items. Many items which used to belong in the Medicine pocket, such as vitamins, have now been moved to the Other Items pocket. The defunct Mail pocket has been replaced with the Treasures pocket which contains items such as Nuggets and Fossils.
  • Fixed: Corrected a number of incorrect battle backdrops. Battles should now look much more suited to their environments, particularly at night.
  • Fixed: Mint items now appear in the Items pocket rather than the Medicine pocket. The Blue Flute, Yellow Flute and Red Flute now appear in the Medicine pocket instead of the Battle Items pocket.
  • Fixed: Fixed a bug where the player's earned Badges would not appear on their Trainer Card outside of Kanto.
  • Fixed: Fixed a bug where using in-battle items such as the Red Flute or Persim Berry would incorrectly take the player to the Pokémon party screen if the item failed to take effect.
  • Fixed: Tweaked some text for clarity.
  • Removed: The Nectar seller in the Seven Island Pokémon Center has been removed as these items can now be purchased in the Celadon Department Store in the post-game.

0.1 — 2018-05-14
  • The game is playable up to just after the Elite Four and includes Sevii Islands One, Two and Three.

Gameplay changes
  • Slightly reworked story. Some characters play a larger role and Leaf/Red (the opposite gender of who you're playing as) is also involved.
  • Most Trainers, including Gym Leaders, have updated Pokémon teams to reflect the extra Pokémon in the expanded Kanto Pokédex. Important battles against your Rival, Gym Leaders etc. will have harder teams than the original games, and later on they will start to use Mega Evolution.
  • Day and night cycles return and have an effect on a few things, mostly what wild Pokémon you'll encounter and some evolution methods.
  • Move Tutors appear in Pokémon Centers across Kanto, who will reward you with Battle Points and offer to teach you certain moves in exchange for said Battle Points if you complete tasks for them. These moves are from Move Tutors and TMs across games in the series.
  • The Key Stone, required to initiate Mega Evolution, will be given to you during the story. You will also be able to find or purchase all Mega Stones except for Diancite during your adventure.
  • The Exp. Share, which functions as it does in Generation VII, will be given to you when you receive the Pokédex.
  • You can play Voltorb Flip at the Game Corner for Coins instead of the slot machines, if you so wish.
  • Fight in battles reminiscent of Pokémon Yellow against Team Rocket at various points in the story.
  • Beating Blaine's Gym will get you the National Pokédex.
  • Taking a feature from Sword and Shield, there is now a man by the PC in every Pokémon Center, who acts as a Name Rater, Move Relearner and Move Deleter all in one. Relearning moves is now free, and can remind a Pokémon of level-up moves and its initial egg or event moves. He will also offer to trade your own Pokémon back to you, so that you can evolve Pokémon that require trading to do so.
  • Tackle the Gyms in any order you please, except for the last one.
  • Mr. Hyper now resides in the Pokémon Day Care on Route 5 and offers Hyper Training for Pokémon at level 50 or above in exchange for Bottle Caps. The player can now buy Bottle Caps on 4F of the Celadon Department Store for $20,000 after earning 6 Badges or from the Trainer Tower for 4 BP. You can also earn one daily by defeating Mina in Vermilion City.
  • Similar to Generation IX, a large number of items are available for purchase at the Celadon Department Store depending on the number of Badges obtained, including the Power items, Mint items (after 6 Badges) and PP Ups and Ability Capsules (in the post-game). A few items such as Evolution stones and vitamins are now only available for purchase after obtaining 3 Badges.

Pokémon availability
  • The Kanto Pokédex contains 486 Pokémon, almost all of which are available before the Elite Four. This includes every Pokémon in the original Kanto and Johto Pokédexes, plus the non-Legendary entries from Hoenn and Sinnoh, as well as every Pokémon related to them by evolution.
  • Many, many more Pokémon outside of the Kanto Pokédex are available as well during the later stages of the game.
  • Alternate forms for every Pokémon in the Kanto Pokédex are included. This includes Mega Evolutions along with Alolan, Galarian, Hisuian and Paldean Forms.
  • Meltan and Melmetal are part of the Kanto Pokédex. Meltan is given away by a man near the Pewter City Poké Mart. To evolve it, speak to the girl in the Safari Zone entrance building.
  • Regional Forms are catchable in a special area in the Safari Zone. This area also allows Pokémon such as Pikachu, Exeggcute and Cubone to evolve into their respective Regional Form evolutions under the right conditions.
  • The Safari Zone is now just a normal area where you can catch Pokémon without having to play the Safari Game, much like in ORAS.
  • As in Generation VIII, Eevee can now evolve into Leafeon with a Leaf Stone and Glaceon with an Ice Stone, and Pokémon that evolve via special magnetic field such as Magneton can now be evolved with a Thunder Stone. Crabrawler can evolve with an Ice Stone.
  • Affection (which is different to friendship) does not exist. Eevee will instead evolve into Sylveon at high friendship while knowing a Fairy-type move. This takes priority over the evolution requirements for Espeon and Umbreon, so if you want one of those two Pokémon, be sure that Eevee does not know a Fairy-type move when you attempt to evolve it.
  • All Evolution stones can be purchased in Celadon City.
  • Celadon City is also home to some new stalls where you can purchase Fossils and Incense items. The Fossil stall will have expanded stock after the Elite Four is beaten. Note that, as in Generation IX, Incense items are no longer required to breed for specific baby Pokémon such as Munchlax.
  • Other evolution items such as the Magmarizer can be found in the overworld.
  • The in-game trades have been altered, and now come at a fixed level as in Generation VII.
  • There are more Pokémon available as prizes in the Game Corner.
  • The Sevii Islands contain Pokémon outside of the Kanto Pokédex, from across all generations.
  • Silph Co. now has a basement level where Rotom's form can be changed.
  • Nectars to change Oricorio's form can be purchased from the Celadon Department Store in the post-game.
  • Kleavor can be evolved by using the Black Augurite on a Scyther in the Regional Biodome when it is emulating Hisui. Similarly, Ursaluna can be evolved by using the Peat Block on an Ursaring at night in the Regional Biodome when it is emulating Hisui.
  • Annihilape, Overqwil and Wyrdeer can all be evolved from their previous form by using the right move (Rage Fist, Barb Barrage and Psyshield Bash respectively) 20 times before gaining a level. Psyshield Bash can be taught to Stantler by a woman in the Pokémon Fan Club in Saffron City.

Mechanics
  • Journey and battle using up-to-date mechanics like the Physical/Special split, the Fairy type, Mega Evolution and Hidden Abilities. Note that Z-Moves and Dynamaxing are not implemented.
  • Pokémon have been updated to have their Generation IX types, level-up movepool, stats, abilities and TM/Move Tutor compatibilities. Moves have been updated to function as they do in Generation IX. Pokémon and moves that do not exist in the latest games are instead taken from whichever mainline series game they most recently appeared in, going as far back as Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
  • Inconsistencies in how Pokémon can learn certain moves are corrected. For example, in the official series the Bellsprout line can learn Leech Life via breeding but not via TM. This has been changed. This even extends to event moves such as Zoroark learning Sludge Bomb and Gengar learning Sludge Wave.
  • Mega Evolution takes place before turn order is decided, as in Generation VII.
  • Experience points are handled as in Generation VIII: each participating Pokémon gets the full share of experience points when the opponent faints, and experience point gain is scaled so that you receive more experience points for defeating higher level foes, and fewer for defeating lower level foes. You will receive experience points for capturing a Pokémon, and Trainer Pokémon no longer award 1.5× the experience points of an equivalent wild Pokémon. Pokémon that are able to evolve via level up but have yet to do so will gain a 20% boost to their experience.
  • Items function as in Generation IX, generally. The catch rates of Balls, the two stage stat boost from the X items and the healing potency of Potions are among the updates. Item prices are also largely based on Generation IX, so Ultra Balls cost $800.
  • Wild Legendary and Mythical Pokémon have three random IVs set to 31, as in Generation VII.
  • Breeding works more-or-less as in Generation VII. The Day-Care doesn't level up your Pokémon, and withdrawing them costs a flat $500. The only difference is with breeding regional forms of Pokémon. Breeding two non-Kantonian Pokémon together will still result in the Kantonian form unless a non-Kantonian parent in the same evolutionary line as the child is holding an Everstone. For example, breeding a female Alolan Sandslash and male Tauros will result in a Kantonian Sandshrew. However, if the Alolan Sandslash holds an Everstone, then the child will be an Alolan Sandshrew.

Quality of life changes
  • You can toggle the speed-up feature to go fast (2×) or very fast (4×) with the Q button. This button is configurable through the F1 remapping feature.
  • TMs are infinite use instead of single use.
  • HMs no longer exist. Moves that used to be HMs, such as Surf and Cut, are still available but do not have a field effect. A new Key Item, the Poké Summon, instead fills the role of HMs in a similar manner to Sun and Moon's Poké Ride feature.
  • You can access your Pokémon Boxes from almost anywhere using the Boxes option on the menu. Be aware that boxed Pokémon are not automatically healed upon capture but are healed when visiting a Pokémon Center. The adviser at the Pokémon League will inform you that you cannot access your Boxes when challenging the Elite Four.
  • The Day-Care Center on Route 5 now allows you to deposit and breed two Pokémon. The final ledge on Route 5 also has a gap in it to make the Day-Care easier to visit.
  • There is no limit on the number of different items you can have in your Bag and so the Item Storage System no longer exists.
  • You can sort your Bag pockets by type or name (or number for TMs). The option to sort will appear when you select any item in your Bag.
  • You can swap Pokémon into your party immediately after capture if your party is full.

Minor changes
  • There are some NPC text changes to reflect changes to gameplay, including proper capitalisation and renaming of some Trainer classes like the Ace Trainer.
  • Pokémon sprites have been updated to Generation V. For Pokémon beyond this generation, suitable fan works of a Generation V style have been used.
  • TMs are sold in various Poké Marts.
  • Pokémon cries have been updated to Generation VIII.
  • Badges follow the OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire mechanics, but have no effect on your usage of HM moves. The first Badge makes Pokémon up to Lv. 20 obey, then 30, then 40 etc. The eighth and final badge makes all Pokémon obey.
  • Receive one Premier Ball for every 10 Balls bought in a transaction.
  • Pokémon received from in-game trades come at predetermined levels, rather than matching the level of the traded Pokémon, in line with later generations.
  • There is no tutorial in the first battle with Blue.
  • Pokémon Centers have no upstairs, as there is no external trading or battling.
  • After getting the Pokédex from Oak, he gives you twenty Poké Balls instead of five. You also start with more money, in line with later generations. This is to help with the fact that there are more species of Pokémon early on.
  • You start with the Running Shoes, and can toggle them on and off in the Options menu.
  • Poké Marts sell items to you based on the number of Badges you have, as in later Pokémon games.
  • No Pokémon catching tutorial from the old man.
  • No Teachy TV, Fame Checker, Powder Jar or Berry Crush.
  • No profile from the girl in the Pewter City Pokémon Center.
  • The Bike Shop's new sale price for the Bicycle is [imath]10,000,000, to reflect to new maximum money of[/imath]9,999,999.
  • The Team Rocket Grunt on Nugget Bridge only hands out one Nugget, even if you lose and re-battle him. This sidesteps what is likely a bug in FRLG.
  • The girl who trades one gender of Nidoran for the other in the Underground Path (Route 5–6) will now accept either Nidoran and trade you a Togepi in return.
  • No questionnaire in the Vermilion City Poké Mart.
  • There is no requirement to catch a certain number of Pokémon to receive rewards from Professor Oak's aides.
  • Celadon Mansion is now called Celadon Condominiums, as in Generation IV.
  • Vending machines have a chance for extra drinks to drop down according to the mechanics in Generation VI.
  • The Arceus type-enhancing plates can be purchased in Fuchsia City.
  • Instead of the Exp. Share, the Aide on Route 15 gives out the Lucky Egg instead.
  • A teleporter has been added to Saffron Gym that takes you from Sabrina's room to the exit. Another one appears after you have defeated her, so that you can quickly return for rematches.
  • Hidden items on Treasure Beach and berries in the Berry Forest respawn after 24 hours have passed.
  • The boulders in Victory Road will stay on their switches once moved into place.
  • Azurill will not change gender when evolving, as in Generation VI and beyond.

Spoiler changes
  • The Kanto starters that you didn't choose are gifted to you in a similar manner to their giveaways in Pokémon Yellow. You will also be given a type-enhancing item by these NPCs, regardless of whether they give you the Pokémon or not:
    • Bulbasaur and the Miracle Seed are given away by a girl in Cerulean City. She resides in the north-west of the city, in the house on the right, instead of the Berry Crush man. Unlike in Pokémon Yellow, you do not have to show her a Pokémon with high friendship.
    • Charmander and the Charcoal can be received from a man at the top of Route 24.
    • Squirtle and the Mystic Water are given away in Vermilion City by an officer in the middle of the city. Unlike in Pokémon Yellow, having the Thunder Badge is not necessary here.
  • You'll encounter Professor Birch on Route 25, and he will give you and Leaf/Red a choice of the Hoenn starter Pokémon, as well as their respective Mega Stone. Leaf will choose before you, opting for the Hoenn starter of the same type as your Kanto starter. She'll give you a bred copy of her starter later, and you'll get the final missing starter from an Egg on Five Island's Water Labyrinth.
  • Leaf/Red meets and fights you on Route 25, at the end of Rock Tunnel, on Cinnabar Island and in Cerulean Cave. They can be rematched daily after the Cerulean Cave battle in Cerulean City.
  • You also team up with Leaf/Red during the Rocket takeover of the Pokémon Tower.
  • Mr. Fuji will give you the Key Stone and a Mega Stone for your starter Pokémon. If you picked Charmander, you will be given a choice of either Charizardite X or Charizardite Y.
  • You will team up with Blue to take on some familiar Rockets and Giovanni in Silph Co. You will then solo fight a Mewtwo holding Mewtwonite Y.
  • Entei replaces Moltres on One Island. Moltres is back on Victory Road as in Red and Blue. Suicune and Raikou reside somewhere on Islands Two and Three respectively.
  • Receive a starter Pokémon of your choice at Professor Oak's Laboratory from across different generations after beating the Elite Four.

How to get to the 8th gym. I did the Sevii islands, and that's typically when the 8th gym opens, but it's still locked for me. Also, I have a bug to report. Sometimes, it says I caught a Pokemon, but the game doesn't register it, so I have to catch it again.

Edit: Nevermind about the gym. I realized I never actually challenged Lt. Surge.
