Can you handle the cutthroat and perilous trials set forth by the judges?
This is IRON MAPPER: Relic Castle's mapping competition!

Trial 0. Wild
Deadline: Sunday, June 20th 2021

SEASON 6 DISCUSSION THREAD
Iron Mapper
Iron Mapper is a mapping competition on Relic Castle. Each mapping competition, otherwise known as a "trial", will have a deadline clearly stated, and you will have this time to complete and submit a map according to the theme and criteria of the trial. Once all submitted maps are judged after the deadline (this depends on the volume of entries, usually a few days), the judges will post the results, and prepare for the next trial.

For more information (overall rules, how judging works, a list of trials) please visit the Discussion thread:

Trial 0. Wild

Deadline:
Sunday, June 20th 2021

Season 6 will officially begin after the Summer Game Jam, but how could we possibly wait that long?!
We're kicking off the Iron Mapper hype with our first and only Pre-Season Trial! Buckle in and get ready to warm-up!

Find your wild side! "Wild" can mean lots of things to each individual, and fits perfectly with the increased challenge of Iron Mapper Season 6! No matter what idea comes to mind, your goal is to create a map that captures the essence of "wild" while still being a cohesive game map.

Have a wild time mapping!

The following criteria must be met:
  • Any and all assets used in your map must be public or must be shared for public use in your submission post.
  • All public assets used for your map must be credited clearly and properly.
  • You may not use the tiles/tilesets uploaded by another participant for their entry in the same Trial as your entry. You can use the same public tiles, but not the tiles/tilesets that they made or compiled specifically for their own entry.
  • Fogs and NPCs are allowed to be used. You must provide a fogless version of your map or it will not be judged.
  • Your tileset, fogs, and NPCs will not be taken into consideration when judging, so they will not have any impact on your chances of winning.
  • Your map cannot exceed 120x120 tiles.

Your judges for this trial are:
@VanillaSunshine
@aiyinsi

A tip from the judges:

"Remember that 'wild' does not inherently mean 'chaotic'. Try to make a wild map that is still functional and easy to navigate!"

My first Iron Mapper! Hoping this season goes well and I get some nice mapping experience and a win.
This map was 50 x 50 and based on a historic location gone wild near me. I think I pulled off the wild theme relatively well. Good luck to everyone else!

Critique Requested: Yes, absolutely!

Credits:
  • Zeo254 for the ground tiles, bushes, trees, signpost, lake, water, stairs, hills, rocks, flowers, lilypads, and anything else I may have forgotten to list
  • Kyledove for the grass tiles and small palm plant
  • XDinky for the small bush house
  • SailorVicious: For the wooden bridges
  • NocTurn for large amounts of recoloring within the tree tiles and grass, along with other small edits
Notes: I wanted to include an NPC rendition of this map with fogs and such, but I figured there would be no point if I have no plans on using this map and also if it doesn't matter for judging purposes. The original idea for this map was a small lakside retreat with the bush house used for viewing wildlife up-close without disturbing it inherently. Eventually I realized that wasn't enough for a whole map submission, though, and I expanded it to include a small route attached as well! I thought it matched with the wild theme because it's something human-made being integrated into the wild, and I also tried to make things look a bit overgrown as well to match the wild theme.

Here's the tileset if you want to use it for yourself (it has some other tiles that I didn't use, but feel free to use them too! Everything not used should be credited to Zeo254, though, and myself for the fence edits:

Notes:
I'm still a little bit conflicted with what I wanted to achieve with this map. Initially, I had this concept of this town being abandoned after a fire... But I wasn't fully content with that... However, I truly did like how this turned out and I do plan on incorporating this map in a future project of mine. :)

here's the compiled tileset if anyone's interested in using it. i made a bunch of edits to the original tiles, so;

Notes: First iron mapper! The thought of a jungle just came to me, and i found some nice tiles. I decided to add the ruins and temple because it felt more interesting than just a normal map. I had to do a couple recolors, but nothing much! This was really fun and im excited for future trials!

Notes:
I was going to add trainers & stuff just to demonstrate where they would be if this were an in-game route, but I thought...no, probably not just for the sake of judging. I imagined this as a slightly more fantastical take on a city, where you would be ducking in and out of buildings, like the one on the top right - running into groups of trainers on the way. You would also be able to Surf under the bridge! Maybe the river was always here and the city's melded into it, or maybe it was flooded relatively recently, and this part has been a ghost suburb ever since - you decide.

Notes: When thinking about the theme, I considered what things "wild" can describe. One idea that came to mind is a wild party. From there, I had to decide what kind of party to make. I wound up going with a sleazy speakeasy. If I were to expand on the idea, I would include a secret passage to the area. And perhaps the game's evil team would be lurking around...

Notes: I spent so long on these tiles... aaaaa. Hopefully someone will find use of some of these. I also found the desert extremely difficult to map, because I found decoration tiles occasionally being placed at random. I eventually tried a strategy of grouping categories, such as multiple rocks together, or cacti together. I had a blast mapping this!

Notes:
The idea behind this map was that there was an old civilization, and the civilization worked harmoniously with the environment and wilderness, but when the land was invaded, and the civilization destroyed, the land was abandoned and the wilderness took over. I originally was going for a small map, I started with something like 25x25, and very slowly expanded it as I went, and it ended up being almost 4x that, at 48x48, not my largest map, but definitely one of my more detailed ones.

  • Pokémon Emerald Tiles - Ripped by Heartlessdragoon
  • Color edits - DawnBronze, me
  • Tent - me

Notes:
Nestled deep within the vast, and largely uninhabited, area known as simply "The Scrub," Cragcombe is a small river valley that is home to a wide variety of Pokémon species suited to its rough terrain including Rhyhorn, Phanpy, Cubone, Skarmory, Geodude, and Duduo. The Lazy Rill River, a slow and shallow river that has carved a deep path through The Scrub over the course of centuries, is home to Magikarp, Wooper, Mudkip, Poliwag, and Yanma. Curiously, nearly all the Pokémon found in Cragcombe remain in their basic form for the entirety of their life cycles. The area briefly garnered attention from prospectors after the discovery of mysterious stones in its hills. The discovery launched something of a stone rush as prospectors and adventurers alike swarmed to the area seeking their fortunes along the northern rim of Lazy Rill River. The stones pulled from the mine were examined by Pokémon Professors from every region, as they were suspected to cause some Pokémon evolve, or at the very least boost rock type attacks, but after training his beloved Bidoof to level 100, Professor Rowan of the Sinnoh region (grandfather to the Prof. Rowan of DPP) concluded that these stones did nothing of the sort, and, in fact, prevented evolution altogether. This discovery led to rapidly fading interest in the now named Everstone Mine. The prospectors hurriedly left the inhospitable terrain, leaving behind drilling equipment and many items to rust within Everstone Mine; some even left their Pokémon, and now Drilbur and Machop populations have exploded within the abandoned mine. Further into the hills, intrepid hikers will find the Warrens, a network of tunnels burrowed by Bunnelby, now home to a population of Nidoran as well; it is theorized that the Nidoran seek shelter in the tunnels as there are no Nidoking or Nidoqueen in Cragcombe to protect them from the hungry Skarmory that patrol the skies. In the northernmost area of Cragcombe lies a research camp. A lone scientist works to discover a centuries-old secret buried within the heart of Cragcombe. Ever eager for willing research assistants (they rarely last long), the scientist relays that deep within the Warrens, a path to Bullhead Bottom can be found. Bullhead Bottom is an ancient limestone cavern that opens into Lazy Rill River. The walls of the Bottom are rich with fossils, as the area is barely explored by humans as it is completely dark, making navigation difficult without HM assistance. The scientist is not searching for fossils, however. Rumors tell of a further danger lying deep within the Bottom; Hikers and Fishermen have told tales of a huge Pokémon that resides within a pool at the center of the cave; the Pokémon is said to have grown so large it cannot escape the cave and can swallow a man whole; it is said to be older than Cragcombe itself and has thus avoided the evolutionary curse of the area; it is known simply as "The Deep One."
To capture the heart of the "Wild" theme, I wanted to focus on the interactions between Pokémon species in the wild (Bunnelby/Nidoran/Skarmory), interesting scenarios that might take place in the wild (Everstones preventing evolution, an eons-old Whiscash forever locked in the dark awaiting its next meal, abandoned Pokémon repopulating an area that was undoubtedly just a Zubat plague before their introduction by humans), as well as nature retaking what was once controlled by man until they saw no more value in it. I tried to make the map story-driven with multiple sublocations to explore, lore to discover, and items to find. Since there is so much to explore, I tried to include rapid cutbacks to the map exit or potential healing points to make gameplay fun rather than a chore.

Credits: I used the Outside tileset from Pokémon Wayward, the resource pack for it is available here.

Notes: I didn't get too creative with my interpretation of "Wild" here, it's a jungle-y hilly route zone mostly untouched by human people. I considered showing where the items would be on the map, but then I didn't. If this map were in a game, there would be items on it. And NPCs, too. I think the map turned out pretty neat.

Zaffre: Some edits and compiling the tileset.

Notes: This was honestly super fun to make. I got to try out an entirely new style to me, which comes with its own limitations and challenges, but also payed homage to some of my favorite games. I mostly only used tiles from Link's Awakening DX, but also took some trees and flowers from Ambi's Castle from Oracle of Ages. I tried to make it so the map could be played as if in one of the GBC Zelda games, so in a 10x8 grid. In this case I have 6 sections, and I tried my best to make every section have something interesting, while at the same time not having everything feel too cluttered.

This is my first Iron Mapper! I started creating this map a week ago but gave up because it was trash, but today I continued to work on it and I'm pretty happy I did! It's also the first time I compiled a tileset, so it was a nice learning experience. I'm not 100% happy with the map, but I'm glad I submitted something!

Notes: Ah, the Neversad. Just talking about this place brings a smile to my face. Ain't no place as untamed as this here. The Donphan and Rhyhorn roaming these lands have made sure to -quite literally- stomp every attempt at building here. That doesn't mean the lands are particularly hostile, mind you. Everyone who treats nature with respect is almost guaranteed to have a blast here. Every tale from visiting adventurers was a happy one, leading up the name of these lands, the Neversad.

The lush grasslands gradually get drier and drier before you reach the desert at Sand's End. Despite Ground type Pokémon dominating these hills, Pokémon of a staggering 17 different types can be found here. From Sigilyph and Numel around the desert to Swampert and Skuntank near the waterside, everyone is bound to come across a species they love.

This map gave me a lot of trouble. I originally intended it to be a crossroads with 4 distinct paths, but that was just too ambitious for the time I was able to spend on this. In the end I have mixed feelings about my entry. Wish I had more flashy tiles to spruce things up some more, but oh well.

I wanted to sprite everything myself in aim of gaining some pixel experience.
I ran out of time, and so decided to just put some pixels together for some component of the map.
To in least try to 'get the design idea' across.

This map was started around 9am on the weekend start. and I was like, I'll see if I what I can manage with the weekend.
It is now 11:57pm on a Sunday night. haha. and I'm spent.

The tileset for this isn't organized yet. When I have some free chill time, I'll spend it on that so it can be released in a format that's easier to use.
Via non-commercial.

It's 11:59 now. and so I can't finish my thought. LOL. till next time
