Essential Doc (Pokémon/TM Locations)

Plot

A life of poor decisions has led you to this moment, the moment where you commit your greatest transgression. In the final moment, you are saved by a mysterious figure and given a chance at redemption. Can you, with your memories wiped and true goal unclear, fulfil the terms of your unbreakable covenant and be born anew? You must traverse the ethereal land of Varia and overcome the seven Vices that represent the aspects of your shattered heart, endeavoring to collect the mementoes along the way that will allow you to piece together your forgotten past.

Features
Stunning Generation 2 style Graphics and systems, built with Essentials GSC.
New regional forms that match the narrative themes of Varia, with some cameos from Pokemon Rosen!
A tight, well-thought out Pokédex numbering only 251.
Custom trainer battles that make the epic moments more challenging and memorable.
Edited tilesets to make every location distinct. A world that changes as you progress. Revisit old locales for new suprises!
Missable adventures that incentivise exploration.
A story that alters course based on what you discover.
Old characters from other generations are holidaying in Varia!
Several hours of content up to the third Vice.

Notes

The team decided during the game-making process that we want to make this a full game at some point, but there should be at least 2-3 hours of content for the time being, up to the third Vice. We wanted to do something in Gen II's style since we all love that era while also incorporating this Game Jam's theme in some way. The protagonist of this game has been "reborn" into a dream world to figure out their past and what they have done. We included forms from our other game Pokémon Rosen as well! We drew inspiration for the beginning scenes from the Persona series as well as Spirited Away for events you'll encounter towards the end of the game. Final Fantasy as well! We did as much playtesting as we could, so there may be some bugs still. Please let us know if there are any issues or things we could improve on! Thank you for reading.

Heyo! I've played up through the second vice, and had a bunch of fun! Here are my thoughts:

First, I think the visuals are really fun in this game. I love how each area has a different tint to it, which helps to bring to life the "feeling" of each area (i.e. fear, depression, laziness, etc). I think it was presented in a really engaging way. You had a lot of cool puzzles too, which were varying degrees of fun and annoying [the spa took a me while to understand what was going on]. The general difficulty curve was good, although the Vices provided a challenge that was a little too steep in my opinion (with having perfect IV pokemon at the same level as your own level cap).

Characters were fun, I like the Indeedees. The story set up was interesting, with the redemption of the protagonist through a "deadly sins"-style exploration. Because of the set up, the story and NPCs and world can end up being a little dour. That makes the moments of levity in dialogue stand out more (and I would encourage more of them!). I'm definitely curious to see where this continues to go, and it looks like the scope of the full game will be just that--a full game!

On a quick visual note, some of the maps did not have sufficient tiles around the sides which un-centers the player character at points (generally interior maps but some at the edges of the exterior maps too). It took me out of my immersion a little bit, so I figured I'd mention that too. No biggie.

Anyway great job to the team for creating this, it is clear to me that a LOT of work went into it and I'm very impressed!

Many thanks for the review, pal! As with Ruru, feedback always appreciated.

First, more than happy you loved it! On behalf of the squad, we really hope you'll tune in again when we have our updates.

It's a shame I didn't get to watch the whole playthrough, or I'd have noted down the maps that were the issue. In the next release, we'll remove the 31 IVs from the teams of the Vices too, for balance sake.

On behalf of the squad, thank you so very much indeed for the review! The only great shame on my part at least, is that I didn't get to see you play it. All feedback is good feedback in my eyes, so many thank yous again for providing some.

If I may, how would you go about adding more depth to the areas we have so far? Each area changes with a substantial number of NPCs having evolving dialouge based on if the Vice effect is still active or not; are you meaning we need more important NPCs that do so? :]

Oh, and I won't spoil anything about what will happen next, but I will ask: did you ever revisit where a Vice was after you beat them? If so, you may have noticed they were no longer there. An NPC in the Big Bang Boom notes that he can't find Plutus anymore, for example. Something is happening behind the scenes indeed...
I think you should definitely take my review with a grain a salt and that it is totally up to you, as the game so far isn't actually complete and things could definitely work better going forward. I am merely telling you how I personally felt playing the game, but I don't want to dictate or affect y'all's overall vision of the game.

I also didn't go back to every map, I remember talking to the NPCs in the bathouse area and the casino, but not much else, but that's quite cool!

I started this game back in August and was having fun, but real life got in the way of me finishing it. I've finally returned to it, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. I've beat the second vice, but don't know how to progress. Any help would be appreciated it.

Hey there buddy! After the second Vice, you need to go to
and then return to Vivifica Town :]

I've made it to the third trial and I've been told I've missed nothing, but I feel like I have missed things. For example, I know I still haven't managed to deliver a single letter. Would it be possible to get a list of side quests or at least some help with the pelipper post quest?

There are three mementos to collect, and two of them are missable. The third one you can miss by choice when talking to the third Vice; don't worry though, when the full game is out there will be a function to collect them via the Time Capsule.

There isn't a list of sidequests, though you may have noticed after defeating a Vice their area usually changes pretty substantially in terms of NPC dialouge. The first letter for instance, is give to an NPC in Otiossum Town who before beating Bushyastra laments losing touch with their penpal; talk to them after Bushyastra and they'll accept the letter (if you have a Wingull/Pelipper in your party as per the rules).

Ah I don't think I've had wingull in my party that must be my problem.

Also...
I just went back down the stairs from where Indeedee would have spoken to me and the trainer is now a lechonk! Its unsettling yet not entirely unexpected and I just love it!

So far as I know, you're the first person to notice that little moment. It's super missable too, as after beating the Vice it won't be there anymore :]
