Notes:

This game is made in the newly released PSDK .25, which isn't as developed as Essentials. Every bug reports are appreciated as it would help the development of the engine!

We made this short game to experiment with the engine, as well as playing with the idea of "how to make losing acceptable", “make a game entirely in one location”, “write an ensemble of characters".

It’s not exactly intended to be a complete Pokemon game (no capturing, no exploring, no leveling up). For us it’s a quick project to test PSDK battle system. We don’t really intend to win the game jam spotlight. Besides we already included "Spotlight" in the title wink wink

UPDATE: The game won 1st place in Game Jam Community Spotlight lol

Resource Pack:

Known Bugs:
  • No, Masquerain is indeed a Water/Bug type now.
  • First Impression can be used more than once. We ended up switching Durant's moveset.

  • Toxic Spikes fails if used against a Steel type.
  • Sky Attack still cloaks the user in harsh light even if they flinch.

I haven't played a Pokemon Relic Jam game in such a long time; this was excellent! The characters were amazingly fleshed out, and it's a fun pick me up. Loved the sprites for the characters that you had!

Update for 1.5 has been released!

  • Updated PSDK version from 25.4 to 25.10
  • Added intro cutscene by Ranko
  • Making each trainer use different battle theme from the official game
  • Opponent team shuffle feature, which randomizes the first Pokemon sent out by the AI
  • Updated the ending to show if you won all matches and eligible for a special badge
  • Music shutting down randomly fixed (?) (we need people to confirm this due to the seemingly random nature of this bug)

Also, if you're a composer looking to practice making battle theme, this project is open for that! We have 10 different trainers, which in theory can support 10 unique themes. You don't have to wait for development time and get feedback immediately!

Patch incoming! The game has been updated to 1.5.1
  • Improved the AI
  • Fixed issues related to the audio bug (fingers crossed!)
  • Deleting more unnecessary audio files

I meant to finish sending this feedback back when I played it, but I straight up forgot to, so here I am:

I really enjoyed this game! I'm not normally a big pokemon battler, but being given a bunch of pokemon with nice movesets and fun abilities from the get-go was a good time. I had a bunch of fun battling and it all felt really well balanced, I won some, I lost some, and there were some really close matches! So for me the battling felt really well done, and the the whole tournament experience felt really well structured.

The story was great, all the characters were fun, and then having their little ending summaries were really cute. The story felt like it was somewhat serious, I was able to treat the characters who the main story revolved around and their motivations seriously, and it was nice that the ending was something uplifting. It felt like a nice complete story arc. The side stories also provided lots of entertainment with memorable characters. It was a pretty large cast, yet despite that there are only like two characters I'd describe as mid at worst.

And going on from the characters, the game and its tiles and battle backgrounds were all quite well done in a consistent, pleasing to the eye style, however artistically the real stand out were the character portraits. They reminded me a lot of the battle portraits in X&Y which was nice, and really helped me 'know' the character. I don't know if 'know' is the right word, but like being able see the character so clearly and nicely in that portrait, it made it easier for my brain to comprehend the character as a whole. I think these portraits play a large part in why the characters are so memorable.

I think that is all I have to say, I don't really have anything else, or anything to complain about. The game is a good length and doesn't overstay its welcome. It serves as a great battle tournament styled game while also providing a compelling story and fun characters which do not detract from the battle experience.

I've downloaded this twice now but malwarebytes goes crazy over it, says there about 49 viruses in it? Is this just a false positive or something?

We tested it on our end and it seems good as usual. We haven't updated the link in a few months now, so it's very likely just false positive.

Thanks to PokeAJ and DemonetizationMan, this game is now available in Spanish!

We also updated the game to the latest PSDK version (v26) which came along with more bug fixes and QoL changes.

While this might seem to be the last update for the game, please look forward for our next project!

I streamed this game today (June 30, 2023) as part of my pride month charity spotlight, and I'd like to do a little mini-review of the game!

It was very much a short but sweet type deal, a small but refined experience that knows what it wants to be and delivers on that well. As far as team customization goes, you're a bit limited, but given the context of the game, that's acceptable. No TMs or move tutors or anything of that nature, you're working with what you've got right from turn one with no knowledge of how the rest of the game will go.

It was a little hair raising near the end, but I never really felt like the odds were considerably stacked against me. I think more of the pressure came from wanting to keep my win streak going than anything else (which I did, thankfully).

Overall, this is a fun one to blow through with a surprising amount of character depth, and the short playtime (roughly 60-70 minutes) I'd be hard pressed not to recommend this to anyone who wants something fun but short.

One of those great games that leaves you craving more. No wonder it won the jam. I'd love to see more or a sequal
