Welcome to the celestial land of Tenno! Known for its futuristic technology and advanced space program, the Tenno Region thrives thanks to the ambitions and benevolence of Team Planetary, an organization dedicated to the region's betterment. You start your Pokémon journey in the Tenno Region like many other trainers, but soon you and your childhood friend/rival witness a more sinister side of Team Planetary. They steal property and take Pokémon, all supposedly in the name of saving the region. Can the ends justify the means? As the only witnesses to these heinous acts in a region that idolizes the villains, it’s up to you to stop them while striving to become the Tenno Champion. Blast off on an out-of-this-world journey of astronomical proportions!
sol-version-switch-2-cover-2.png
Pokémon Sol Version is a fan project that aims to create a traditional Pokémon experience using Pokémon Essentials on RPG Maker XP. It is a part of the Cosmic Quest Project, and is technically the "third version" to the hypothetical Luna and Terra Versions. Currently released is a work-in-progress beta test/demo. What's a beta/demo? I explain in detail here. The main campaign is essentially complete and you can play the entire story up until the credits roll, but there is currently no post-game content. That will come in future updates, as discussed here. But, feel free to keep on exploring the region and completing missed optional content until then.

Important Notes
  • This game is in beta and is an unfinished product. While playing, expect to encounter glitches and game crashes. If you do, please report them, as explained in the "Reporting Issues" section below.
  • Due to the chances of encountering a game crash, I recommend saving your game frequently, especially before and after difficult or important battles or after long story events.
  • The game is essentially complete up until the credits roll. That means you can play the entire main story, but there are no post-game elements added yet. Future updates to come.
  • This game is designed to be a traditional and authentic Pokémon experience. It will not contain features common to fan games, such as a speed-up button.
  • This game is designed to play more like the earlier Pokémon games (Gens I through V), rather than the more modern ones. As such, it may require more effort and thought to beat than you might be used to from modern Pokémon games.
  • The game features the classic version of Exp. Share, rather than the modern version which distributes experience among all Pokémon in the party automatically. An Exp. All item, which functions like the modern Exp. Share, does exist in the game, but it is a reward for a side quest that spans the entire region and cannot be obtained until the very end of the game. It is better to think of it as a post-game item.
  • One aspect of real Pokémon games that could not be replicated by this game is interactions with other players. This means it would usually be impossible to evolve Pokémon that require being traded. However, if you want to evolve such a Pokémon, just show a Pokémon that evolves through trade to the woman on the second floor of any Pokémon Center and she'll give you a special item that can evolve these Pokémon instead.
  • Certain aspects of this game may be incompatible with JoiPlay. I have received reports of graphic display issues, random lag, and missing sound effects, all coming from JoiPlay, rather than any specific issue with the game.
  • JoiPlay prevents players from skipping the opening movie. Players using JoiPlay should either delete or rename the folder titled "Movies" within their "Pokémon Sol Version" folder. This will cause the game to automatically skip the movie. This will have to be done every time the game is updated.

Download v0.1.7 Here
(Updated 9/10/25)
No Hotfix Currently Required

If you need help getting things working after downloading from this link, see here for instructions. Once you've downloaded the most recent version, apply the the most recent hotfix (if applicable) as explained below.

Update Instructions: If you've already downloaded an older version of Sol Version and are looking to update, simply delete your outdated "Pokémon Sol Version" folder and download the current version from the above link. Your save data will transfer over automatically.
Hotfix Instructions: If and only if there's a hotfix download link listed below the regular download link, then you'll need to apply the hotfix to Sol Version to play the most up-to-date version. Click the link to download a file called "Game.rgssad" and move that file into your "Pokémon Sol Version" folder. When it asks you if you want to replace the existing file, say yes. Now your game is up to date. You should always try to have to most recent hotfix applied to your game. If you've just installed Sol Version for the first time and a hotfix is available, you should apply the hotfix right away.

Reporting Issues
As this is a work-in-progress beta build of the game, expect to find glitches and other issues. Please report any issues you come across while playing. You can report them here, or send me an email at CosmicQuestProject@gmail.com. As much information as you can provide on the context of the issue, as well as screenshots if possible, is very helpful. If there's an error message, a picture or copy of the exact message would be of great assistance. The game's error log, with a list of all error messages you've received can be located in your file explorer under Users>[Your Name]>AppData>Roaming>Pokémon Sol Version. AppData is only visible if you first click the "View" tab, and then check the box labeled "Hidden Items." From there, you can copy and paste the exact error message, with the newest errors on the bottom. It is my hope that working together we can remove all of the issues that remain undiscovered in this game and we can move it ever closer to a final release.

Known Issues
  • Sometimes when an ability's name displays in battle, it will instead display the name of the Pokémon's other ability. This is a purely visual bug. The proper ability is still activating.
  • Sometimes the game will crash when transitioning from the opening movie to the title screen. If this happens, you can simply relaunch the game and skip the movie to circumvent the crash.
  • A handful of Tenno Pokémon are still a work in progress and do not yet have certain graphics. For a complete list of Pokémon missing some or all of their graphics, see here.
  • Any Mega Evolved Pokémon not listed here is not yet available in the game, even if a Mega Stone is obtainable. The Mega Stone is a placeholder and will not work.

Mystery Gift
Sol Version has a rotation of Mystery Gift distributions. To learn how to unlock the Mystery Gift feature in Sol Version, see here. The currently running Mystery Gift is a special Galapaglobe. This Earth-themed Pokémon has its Hidden Ability, Cold Blooded, as well as Seismic Toss as an event-exclusive move. Only available until October 3rd, 2025!

Well, The Pokémon Company just unveiled Mega Dragonite. The awkward thing is, Sol Version already has a Mega Dragonite of its own. There's even some suspiciously strong design similarities between the two of them. If you're interested in hearing my thoughts about what I'm going to do with Mega Dragonite going forward, I wrote a post about it that you can read here.

Came with more bug reports:
1- The left vendor at the Fight floor of the Department Store crashes your game
2- When I changed Rotom's form to its Lamp form, it kept the typing, but it didn't change form and didn't learn its move
3- The Food court floor actually leads to the "It" floor and the "It" floor sends me back to the elevator (also, asking for a friend: is there another way to get "It" without getting the ridiculously difficult to get 1 million bucks or is there a way to make money fast? Like, say, mining or something?)
4- The static Heracross at the Park Zone crashes your game. I assume there are other static mons in there that also do the same. Better be safe than sorry
Before I forget, where's the Itemfinder? Need it for the ring quest
Also, I've seen those Lillie and Lance cameos. Those were nice touches I did not expect and yet accept with open arms. Although, to be fair, I probably should've expected more after meeting Looker. After those, I was like "Who's gonna be next? Cynthia? Red? Giovanni? Larry, for some reason?!"

Thanks for the reports.

For "It," the idea was simply to give you something to do if you ever max out your money. It's more of a joke quest than anything, and I wouldn't worry too much about it if you don't want to spend that much money.

The Dowsing Machine can be obtained in Starcore City, were a Camper gives you a quest called "Item Finder Finder." The reward is the Dowsing Machine.

Glad you're enjoying the cameos. There isn't that much else left in the main game, but the post game will have some more.

Bug report: Seems any time I face a regional Grimer via a trainer the game crashes, and unfortunately a lot of trainers have em in the nuclear power plant it seems. With that said seems the wild Grimers are fine funny enough.
Otherwise having a good time with the story, Kudos

Thanks for reporting that. I'm surprised it hasn't been reported yet. I'll make sure to get it fixed before the next update, which is coming soon.

And thanks, glad to hear you're enjoying it.

Another bug report: When you go back to the Den of Mega Evolution's final room after dealing with the Mega Abomination & leave that room, the game crashes (I went there, just in case there was an item I missed, which, spoiler alert: there's none)
Also, if I can suggest something about what to do with your own Mega Dragonite, you could keep it and make it its X Mega form and add Gamefreak's Mega Dragonite as its Y Mega form when it's eventually available in Essentials, so long as you don't make it too similar to Gamefreak's Mega Dragonite, by, say, changing its colors and making it somewhat thinner, similar to how Mega Charizard X looks almost nothing like Mega Charizard Y. It is a suggestion and you're more than allowed to dismiss it, though. Whatever you do with it is entirely up to you. Even then, this does come with a problem: what ability would Gamefreak's Mega Dragonite have?

Thanks for telling me. Turns out I had left behind some outdated script for controlling the partner trainer on that door.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is essentially the direction I'm leaning in right now. It's a bit strange, but I think it will work. I did get lucky that my Mega Dragonite was designed in a completely opposite direction of GameFreak's Mega Dragonite. Where I went with the fierce/cool design, GameFreak with the silly/whimsical design. This is similar to how X and Y Mega Evolutions were already handled with Charizard and Mewtwo. The fact that my Mega Dragonite change type, while GameFreak's will likely remain the same helps things as well. I've just got to decide if it makes sense to label them as X and Y when neither one of them came out in the X and Y games. Regardless, I'm going to wait until the game's release to make any definite choice, especially since this very well could happen again with any number of the Mega Evolutions I've made.

My guess is that abilities won't be an issue. Assuming that Z-A doesn't have abilities (I'm not sure if they've confirmed that or not yet), things will probably work the same that they did in Legends: Arceus, where the abilities of all the new Pokémon were still programed into the game and were datamined soon after the game's release, even though they were unusable in the game itself. Even if that's not the case, I could throw a placeholder ability onto it easily enough with the intention of changing it once the actual ability is revealed.

First of all, I have to say that I'm in love with this fan game, but I have few things I have to add, as for bugs or to improve some stuff. I've made this account just now, because I wanted to give feedback to the game.

  • I'm trying to make a Fire-type monotype, but I find a lot of issues in the early game, when I was up to the second gym, I find myself stuck with only two Pokemon (or Fakemon), Turtsol (starter) and Larvesta (mystery gift).
  • Ditto is not obtainable until late game, which is an issue the life of the players that want to breed Pokemon, like my male Solurtle that has Careful nature and the Beldum I've been trying to get in the Safari Zone (which is hard to catch in first place) with a good nature and Attack IVs (think about maximum Attack in a Metagross or something).
  • I can't find a way to change the nature of my Pokemon and have no idea if these are in game. Sometimes I have to resort to get Elgyem to get a good nature from wild Pokemon, but they're very rare. And then...
  • When I talk to the day care woman after registering her number to add Pokemon in the day care, there was a crash when doing so. Which sucks because I wanted to breed the Elgyem to get something like Adamant with Synchronize to get the Adamant Beldum.
  • In the department store in Kanaveral City, I can't talk to the guy in the food shop because it crashes my game.
  • I wish there was a fast-forward keybind to increase the speed, because I feel like I've wasted many hours in the game just yet, over 20 hours before the fourth gym.

But otherwise, the game is amazing, the Fakemon look pretty nice, and I love the fact that this fan game has a Steel/Fire Metagross, which was a dream I had for ages now to get my favorite Pokemon of such typing. The game has a lot of potential, and I really appreciate this game exists, despite my suffering to get the Beldum I want for over a day, which I still couldn't find or catch (I want a Metagross with 400+ Attack at level 100).

First of all, I have to say that I'm in love with this fan game, but I have few things I have to add, as for bugs or to improve some stuff. I've made this account just now, because I wanted to give feedback to the game.

Thanks for speaking up. Feedback and bug reports are always welcome, and I'm always glad to hear that people are enjoying the game.

I'm trying to make a Fire-type monotype, but I find a lot of issues in the early game, when I was up to the second gym, I find myself stuck with only two Pokemon (or Fakemon), Turtsol (starter) and Larvesta (mystery gift).

I could take another look at Pokémon distribution, but there really isn't many great places to put Fire-Type Pokémon earlier in the game than that. I strived for natural placement on encounters, and would rather not force Pokémon into areas where they aren't the best fit.

And, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I am not really concerned with balancing this game for self-imposed challenges. I think it's great that you're finding your own way to enjoy the game, but I have to design the game with general play in mind.

Ditto is not obtainable until late game, which is an issue the life of the players that want to breed Pokemon, like my male Solurtle that has Careful nature and the Beldum I've been trying to get in the Safari Zone (which is hard to catch in first place) with a good nature and Attack IVs (think about maximum Attack in a Metagross or something).

I've got to admit, I am not min-maxer or a competitive battler, so things like natures and breeding is not something that weighs in my design process much, if at all. When I put Ditto towards the end of the game, I was thinking of it more as a fun little thing to make breeding easier as you enter post-game territory, rather than as a necessary tool. I'll consider if there's anywhere earlier in the game that might be a good fit for it.

I can't find a way to change the nature of my Pokemon and have no idea if these are in game. Sometimes I have to resort to get Elgyem to get a good nature from wild Pokemon, but they're very rare. And then...

This game is a bit old fashioned and overall plays closer to a Gen IV or V game than a modern one in a lot of respects. This is one of those. There are no mints or anything like them. While I admit that this is easy for me to say as someone who doesn't care what nature their Pokémon has, I do tend to believe that if you want the perfect Pokémon, you have to put in the work for it, so I was never really a fan of the idea of things like mints anyways. And, personally, as a lore-first kind of person, mints that you can feed your Pokémon to change their personality has always struck me as a bit messed up.

Thanks for those reports. I have an update coming out soon, and I'll be sure to get those fixed for it.

I wish there was a fast-forward keybind to increase the speed, because I feel like I've wasted many hours in the game just yet, over 20 hours before the fourth gym.

This is something that's been suggested by others, but is something that I am pretty firmly against. I hope you can understand that my primary goal when creating this game was to create as a realistic of a Pokémon game as possible, something that you could almost forget isn't an actual Pokémon game. A speed-up button just isn't something that I can see ever existing in a real game, and having it here would just ruin that illusion of authenticity that I'm going for. Sorry.

Overall with everything, I really hope I'm not coming off as dismissive of your playstyle. I'm really trying not to be, it's just so utterly different from my completely casual playstyle that there were bound to be compatibility issues between how you play and how I designed the game.

v0.1.3 Update
This time around, we've got a big update consisting of a lot of little things. Thanks to some dedicated reporters, we've got a large plethora of bug fixes this time around, as well as a handful smaller content updates, but all together this is the most changes of any update yet. We also have our first new Pokémon graphic being added with Saws, the Saw Shark Pokémon, having its front sprite added to the game (as well as Lamp Rotom and Gigastar, which were accidently left out of the original release).

saws.png

This is a full update, so a new download is required.

Changelog:
  • Added a front sprite for Saws.
  • Added the missing front and back sprites of Rotom Lamp Form and Gigastar.
  • Added a new move called Caustic Acid, a special Poison-Type move that can inflict burn. It can be learned by Pokémon such as Venimbus, Miltaint, and Flapple.
  • Added two of Professor Pine's aides to the region. One at the Orbitz Gate and the other at the Starcore Pokémon Center. These NPCs can check your progress on the "Meteoric Hunt" side quest and give you rewards so that you don't have to walk all the way back to Launch Town before obtaining Fly.
  • Added an NPC to check the type of a Pokémon's Hidden Power. A Pokémon Breeder at the Day-Care Center will now do this.
  • Tyde can be found at the Marine Society, where he will buy the Relic treasures at a high price. He'll only buy Relic Copper, Silver, and Gold before defeating the Champion. After, he'll buy anything.
  • By request, it is now possible to encounter Ditto earlier in the game. It can be found on Route 12.
  • Fixed a softlock that would occur if you rematched the Security Core in the Planetary Research Facility after losing a battle against it.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause you to skip the battle against the Mecha-Suit Grunt in the Starstreak Mountains if you lost a battle against it.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the Tusk and Saber Fossils from being revived at the Pokémon Research Lab.
  • Repaired the functionality of the Link Cable item so that it properly works and allows Pokémon that normal evolve through trading to evolve.
  • Fixed a crash that would occur when attempting to interact with the special hidden overworld encounter Pokémon in the Park Zone.
  • Repaired the Pokémon Day-Care Center so that the game doesn't crash when speaking to the Day-Care Lady.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when attempting to complete the "Ghost Busting!" side quest in Ort City.
  • Repaired an issue with the side quest "Fly High" on Route 16, where the quest would not show as completed in the quest log after finishing it. If you've already completed the quest but it isn't marked as completed, you can now speak to the Birdkeeper who gave the quest again to have it marked as complete.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the line for the Cosmic Cruise ride in Cosm City to not move if the "Those Who Wait" side quest has been started.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause the "Where's Waldon" quest to advance to the Opti City stage if the "Archeology Breakthrough" quest entered stage 2. If your Quest Log says Waldon is in Opti City but you can't find him there, you encountered this glitch and Waldon will instead be where ever he told you he'd be going next instead.
  • Fixed an issue with the elevators in the Kanaveral Department Store and Grand Tenno Hotel that would either cause it to bring you to wrong floor or not allow you to exit.
  • Fixed an issue with one of the bridges on Route 15 not allowing you to walk across it.
  • Fixed an issue with the breakable walls in the Brutal Cave that would cause the game to freeze if Rock Smash Level 3 is used on them.
  • Fixed a problem with overworld encounters such as bird shadows that would cause an infinite loop of battles if two different encounters are touched simultaneously.
  • Fixed a crash when speaking to the clerk on the right hand side of Floor 10 of the Kanaveral Department Store and to berry shop in the Food Court.
  • Fixed a crash that occurs when exiting the boss battle room of the Den of Mega Evolution.
  • Fixed a crash that would occur if you speak to Cosmo in the Den of Mega Evolution under specific conditions.
  • Fixed a problem with the "A Whole Different Level" side quest that prevented it from being completed.

There's a pretty big bug when you get given your Pokémon back after the mega evolution den where there's only a raichu in your party and a raichu gets ent to your box meaning your Pokémon are gone

Hmm... That's extra nasty. Thanks for bringing it up. I'll look into getting it fixed right away. I just need to figure out why that issue hasn't occurred previously. Is there anyone else out there that had this happen, but didn't report it?

Yeah and unfortunately until it's fixed I can't continue as I can't use debug to add my team back and don't fancy spending time grinding a whole new team from scratch 😅

Nor should you have to. I'll do my best to figure out a fix as soon as possible. Did you receive the private message I sent you on the topic?

First thank you for making this game.!!

I'm having a blast playing this game and it takes me back to my early childhood of playing the old Pokemon games (red, gold, emerald, etc... ) I wanted to ask you, are you going to update your website on where we can find certain Pokemon locations? For example, I'm trying to find the Pokemon Galapelago, and i don't know if I'm doing something wrong. The pokedex said that i can find it on route 6 (in the water I assume ) but i'm not sure if its a fishing /surf encounter. Or is the spawn rate low?

But keep up the great work, and i can't wait for the came to be completed oneday.

p.s. For the opening song of the sunride tide, did you write the song? it's so good.

I must be missing something, I cannot find the HM for Hidden Trek so I cannot continue through route 13.

You can actually find it in Route 6's grass, but it's quite rare. I remember it took me a while before I got one of my own

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game. I do plan on updating the website to give more specific details on where to find Pokémon in the near future. But, I can confirm what Ironman55555 said, it is in the grass of Route 6 as a rare spawn.

The lyrics to Starlight Tide actually came from AI originally, then I modified them to get it just right.

I must be missing something, I cannot find the HM for Hidden Trek so I cannot continue through route 13.

The Terrain Trek path on Route 13 is an optional side path. You can make it through the route using the upper path without Terrain Trek and make it to Ort City, where you can get the HM.

Emergency Hotfix

This new hotfix attempts to address a massive issue discovered recently where some people (but not all, or even most) would have their team completely deleted during the event in the Den of Mega Evolution.

I have to be completely honest about this one. I was never able to replicate this issue myself, so I cannot be 100% that this hotfix will actually solve the issue. I feel pretty confident that it will, but without being able to test it against the actual issue, it's impossible to say. And even if this fix doesn't work, I've added a failsafe backup method that should ensure your team is not deleted.

Unfortunately, if you were already playing through the Den of Mega Evolution, but have not yet completed it, it is possible that this glitch has already affected you. If you find that you're still missing your Pokémon after you were told they've been returned to you, then please reach out to me either as a private message or through email at CosmicQuestProject@gmail.com. The same goes for anyone who may have experienced this glitch in the past. I can't promise I will be able to restore your original team, but I can help somewhat restore them.

With that being said, if you get this hotfix, complete the Den of Mega Evolution event to the point where your Pokémon are returned, and they're still missing, then reach out to me as described above.

I am extremely sorry to anyone who encountered this glitch. I always form a personal bond with my Pokémon, and I would be devastated to lose them to a random issue like this. Unfortunately, this is just the nature of a beta release of a game. Hopefully this issue is now solved.

Changelog:
  • (Hopefully) repaired a glitch with the Den of Mega Evolution story event deleting the player's team.
  • Fixed a few broken tiles on Route 7 that would lead to a softlock if you stepped on them.
  • Stopped the game from crashing when attempting to purchase Mail from any Mail Center.

Thank you both Bguy7 and Ironman55555!! Time to start looking for my new team member. Also, when I try to download the new update, it seems that due to how large the data is I'm unable to download the game. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you!!

Ok, thanks. Not exactly sure where the upper path is. When I go to route 13 the swamp blocks all progress. Maybe its through the cave above Penum City
