Background:
Pokemon Pure & Corrupt was born out of my desire to create a Pokemon ROM hack/fangame since I was a child. It is being developed completely by myself using Pokemon Essentials and all the various incredible resources created by the community for public use. Currently I have up to four badges completed on each path, making a grand total of 8 badges to collect. Estimated gameplay time is about 5-7 hours.

Plot Synopsis:
Set two weeks after a virus infected the Kyrn Region's Pokemon Storage System, the region grapples with their new reality as they prepare to host the year's Pokemon World Tournament. The "MissingNo. Virus", as it has come to be called, was successful in corrupting the data of all Pokemon stored in the PC at the time causing them to "fuse" with MissingNo.

You are set to begin your Pokemon journey on your 14th birthday during this time of mass panic and confusion throughout your region. Shortly after leaving your house, you are presented a choice. Will you take the route of a standard Pokemon Trainer, or will you be tempted by the alluring power of Glitched Pokemon to reach your ultimate goal? Which path will you choose, I wonder...

The Path is Yours to Climb...
Inspired by Fire Emblem: Fates, I've loved the idea of having two different paths to play through in a Pokemon game. Near the beginning of the game you are given a choice of path to take. the "Pure" Path or the "Corrupt" Path.

The Pure Path is more of your standard Pokemon journey. Defeat Gyms, take down the evil team, etc.

The Corrupt Path, however, is intended to deviate from the standard Pokemon format. Not drastically, but it will be more difficult (both literally and lore-wise.)
Your ultimate goal is still to defeat Gyms and become the Champion, but the methods in which you get to that point are different. Due to the MissingNo. Virus the region has closed off many of its doors to anyone who uses Glitched Pokemon. Pokemon Centers cannot heal you, Gyms will reject your challenges, and more. Who will you turn to in order to achieve your goal as the best Trainer in the Kyrn Region?!

Features & Gameplay Mechanics:
  • Mechanics up to Gen 8 (currently) but with all Gen 9 Pokemon, moves, abilities, etc.
  • Two paths each with a storyline that connects with the other. You must play both paths to learn all the information.
  • A huge region to explore, essentially split in half for each main story but free-roam will be allowed in the post-game!
  • Over 450 Pokemon to find throughout the large Kyrn Region. Current demo has around 200 available.
  • A brand new form of Pokemon: Glitched Pokemon. They come with moveset changes and sometimes even new typings and abilities.
  • A new, fitting typing for all Glitched forms: Bird! But that's not all... each of the 18 types in the game has its own Bird variant!
  • The Bird-typing introduces the type-effectiveness chart from Inverse Battles when battling Pokemon of the opposite form as you (i.e. Glitched vs non-Glitched Pokemon.) The type chart is vanilla otherwise.
  • 16 unique Gyms to battle across the region.
  • NEW: Side Quests have been added! There aren't many for now, but they're there!
  • A very long ways away but a Battle Frontier and the Pokemon World Tournament are both planned for the post-game!
  • Level Caps on the Corrupt Path, adding to the difficulty.
  • See a Pokemon's IVs and EVs right on the summary screen!
  • Speedup plugin.
  • Multiple save files plugin; you don't have to lose your progress on one path to play the other!
  • PokeUpdater support, allowing players to update their games right from the main menu!
  • Overworld Encounters in some areas, sometimes aggressive like in Legends: Arceus!

No PokeUpdater version (intended for those who cannot launch the game due to a PokeUpdater-related error or for those who wish to play without needing an internet connection.)

Demo goes up to Gym #4 (Hyades City) on the Pure Path and Badge #4 (Metis Village) on the Corrupt Path. There are two secret battles to find.

Known Bugs/Issues:
  • Custom music volumes are not normalized at the moment; some may be too loud or too quiet.
  • Some custom music does not loop properly at the moment.
  • Some door animations may look weird/not work properly.
  • Visual bug entering Heratta House door.
Weird graphical bug when exiting caves.
Minor stutter lag when nearing map borders. This is an RPG Maker XP issue related to tileset loading.
  • Claw Game might act slow/buggy. I haven't fully checked how it works on v21.1 yet.
  • Graphical bug after going up/down side stairs. Basically displaces the player character on the Y Axis until you enter a new map, should be purely graphical but stuff like Trainer encounters look weird.

Pokémon Pure & Corrupt

Made using Pokémon Essentials v20.1.

Public Demo #1 has been released.
Download Link

Please keep in mind that this is a small, kinda rough demo that ends immediately after defeating the second Gym of each path. There is around 2 hours of gameplay here depending on how you play; if you just speedrun through everything it can be banged out in under an hour. For the sake of playtesting I'd prefer if people took their time.

Please leave feedback and report all bugs you find (but please read the "Known Bugs" section of the main post.)
I am very open to feedback as I am a one-man dev team and this is my first time making a fangame. I know there are lots of unpolished things I can improve on.
There shouldn't be any game-breaking bugs but I playtested it at 5am last night so I might've missed something.

If the game gains a decent amount of interest I might consider opening a Discord server.

EMERGENCY HOTFIX

I'm a clown and I forgot to remove the badge requirement for Rock Smash because in debug mode you can just... use field moves. This mistake made the Corrupt Path impossible to complete.

Please download the newest version here. Apologies to anyone who already made progress; save files should be able to transfer just fine though.

The only other thing I changed is there's now a work in progress intro cutscene that I was in the middle of scripting.

This Game seems interesting. I always liked the glitches in pokemon cuz they give off some glitches with advantages and some that will break a game completely. That being Said, I like where you are going with this fan game and I hope that it: first, gets completed unlike other fan games and second, isn't restricted to only be playable on pc because I really don't like play pokemon fan games on pc and would rather play it on mobile using Joiplay. And third, have fun making this game so the same joy you will have to be shared to the public. You are making something great and I hope you will succeed in the future. Once you complete the game, I will enjoy it as well for the millions of people who will play it and I can't wait to see where this game goes 😊

I thought I fixed the badge requirement bug but clearly not, that sucks. My bad.

As for the warp... what? I'm really confused why that's happening when I set a self-switch for that cutscene event to disable itself once its seen at the beginning of the game. It shouldn't trigger again when entering the building.

I'll fix both of these bugs but I'm knee-deep in developing the next demo so I'm not sure if I can push out fixes until then.

Thank you for your bug reports.

Ah it happens ill prolly try a pure run in the meantime. If youd need a vid of the cutscene glitch let me know if you cant replicate on your end. Also a littel funny glitch: in the first city i didnt follow the person after interacting with the sign on the pokecenter then left the city and came back and they were back at the center but "entered" a building after interacting with XD it was confusig but i figured out where to go.

Mmm, yeah that's just a visual bug thankfully but it's caused by Events "resetting" to their default location when a map is reloaded and I always forget to put a switch preventing that. It's kind of hard to deal with especially if I use "Set Event Location" for stuff.

Thanks. I'm aiming to get something out in the next few days to add one more Gym and fix the game-breaking bugs.

Version 0.4.1 (aka Demo 2) has released.

Download
Key Points to this release:
  • Fixes bugs on Corrupt Path that renders the entire second Gym portion of the path incompletable.
  • Adds a 3rd Gym to the Pure Path.

Full Changelog:
## STORY & DIALOGUE ##
  • Added name windows for all NPC dialogue.
  • Cleaned up several lines of dialogue throughout the game.
- Bugfix: Fixed a typo in Heratta Research Center.

## GRAPHICS ##
- Removed the railway from several locations as the lore for it has changed; some NPC text and various other tidbits have yet to be changed to reflect this.
- Bugfix: Made the Pokedex tile disappear when obtained.
- Bugfix: Fixed tiling error on Sixth Avenue.

## GAMEPLAY ##
- Bugfix:
Player's mom no longer gives Poke Balls, preventing the possibility of trading away a Caterpie/Scatterbug instead of your starter Pokemon.
- Bugfix: Fixed a passability error in Twilight Woods.
- Bugfix: Fixed Team Heratta Grunt Garrett not having a Glitched Scyther.
- Bugfix: Fixed an issue where Black Belt Hyo's post-battle dialogue would prevent his battle from triggering.
- Bugfix: Fixed the "sailing to Iocaste Island" event so that it doesn't replay the cutscenes if you were to white out before visiting the Heratta Hideout.
- Bugfix: ACTUALLY fixed Rock Smash not being usable on the field, thus rendering the Plutonian Stones quest impossible. I messed up last time and also made Cut unusable.
- Bugfix: Fixed an issue where the intro cutscene would replay when entering the Heratta Research Center, sending you back to Twilight Town afterward.

## POKEMON ##
- Bugfix:
Fixed regular form Swellow having Bird-type moves.

## LOCATIONS ##
  • Opened up the rest of Fifth Avenue, added Kalyke Fire Hall
  • Added Tauri Park
  • Added Europa Arena
  • Added Nix Cemetary
  • Added Lake Electra
  • Removed the random Wailord from Chaldene Apartments; it was an inside joke kept in for too long.
  • Revamped Chaldene City Gym; this was a long time coming.
- Bugfix: Fixed some tiles in Mercurial Library that weren't meant to be passable.

## MOVES ##
- Lowered Glitched Fake Out's effect chance to 35%.

Known Bugs/Issues:
  • Lag when nearing map borders, I have no idea what's causing this. I edited down my tilesets (they were getting too big) to prevent future lag and other issues but now it's all wack.
  • Weird graphical bug when exiting caves.
  • There's supposed to be a fade out/in transition when Basil uses his Blastoise during the Orthosie cutscene.
  • Shiny Forms of Glitched Pokémon have not been created yet.
  • Custom music volumes are not normalized at the moment; some may be too loud or too quiet.
  • Some custom music may not loop properly at the moment.
  • Some door animations may look weird/not work properly.
  • Visual bug entering Heratta House door.
  • Some NPCs might slide instead of walk.
  • Tiling error in one small section of Tauri Park that I was too late to catch before uploading the latest demo.

Remember, this demo only adds new areas to the Pure Path. The majority of new areas in development are backloaded into the Corrupt Path this time around.

As always, there may be more bugs or other issues. I am hoping this time around they are minor but admittedly this demo was rushed ahead of schedule in order to put out a fix for the Corrupt Path softlock. I was too far into developing the new areas to go back and release just a small fix. That is to say, the new areas aren't as polished and several things are subject to change when all is said and done.

I'd like feedback on the difficulty of the new Gym. I believe it might be too difficult as it stands.

  • Adjusted all Glitched form movesets for all the removed Glitched moves. Refer to Moves section for details.
  • Adjusted all Glitched form movesets to have all new available Glitched moves upon level up.

v0.4.3 Update!
Updated to Essentials v21.1, a fix for a major bug I somehow missed, other error fixes.
Download here.
Join the Discord Server! I post small updates like this in there first!

Note: Save files from before v0.4.3 will not be compatible with this update.
Note: Please be wary that there may be more bugs than usual. Sideways facing stairs are especially janky right now so proceed with caution. I did my best.

Changelog:
## GAME OVERHAUL ##
- Pure & Corrupt has been updated to Essentials v21.1 as of this update. There may be several unforseen bugs/issues with this update.

## STORY & DIALOGUE ##
  • Adjusted an NPC in Kyrn Region Hospital to have a new line of dialogue.
  • Bugfix: Fixed an NPC in Mercurial Town without a name window.
  • Bugfix: Fixed an NPC in Medical District without a name window.
  • Bugfix: Fixed an NPC in Kyrn Region Hospital without a name window.
  • Bugfix: Fixed an NPC in Isonoe City with a broken name window.

## GAMEPLAY ##
  • The Guardian Pokemon on Iocaste Island have been nerfed from 20 IVs -> 15 IVs.
  • Bugfix: Fixed bad tile passability on the Twilight Town fountain.
  • Bugfix: Fixed a possible softlock during the Umbreon encounter on First Avenue.
  • Bugfix: Fixed an invisible wall on Kyrn Region Hospital's second floor.
  • Bugfix: Fixed the sideways stairs not working on First Avenue thus making the rest of the game inaccessible. No excuse there, I'm just bad.
  • Bugfix: Fixed being able to skip the "Gym Trainers" in the Heratta House.
  • Bugfix: Fixed Io Volcano having a stupidly high encounter rate.
  • Bugfix: Fixed being able to skip the Rock Smash rocks blocking Guardian Shuckle on Iocaste Island.
  • Bugfix: Fixed not being able to access Kalyke Fire Hall.
  • Bugfix: Fixed bad tile passibility resulting in an inaccessible berry in Tauri Park.
  • Bugfix: Fixed an issue where you'd be locked out of the third badge on Pure Path if you said "No" to challenging the Gym Leader.
  • Bugfix: Fixed Gym Leader Illamet not using her doubles team in the doubles format.
  • Bugfix: Fixed one of the Noibat having the wrong nature in the Adrastea Tunnel Double Battle scenario.
  • Bugfix: Also fixed the wrong Noibat holding the Bird Gem in the Double Battle scenario.

## LOCATIONS ##
  • Removed an unnecessary Cut tree on Iocaste Island.
  • Adjusted a different Cut tree for new side stairs-related reasons.
  • Added a new event in the Ruined Temple to help find the Plutonian Stone and other item easier.

## POKEMON ##
- Bugfix: Gave Glitched Tropius "Take Flight" instead of "Wind Rider", as intended.

## ITEMS ##
- Bugfix: Fixed Illamet giving out Substitute instead of Brick Break as her TM.

## ABILITIES ##
- Bugfix: Coded "Take Flight" correctly. It should now boost Speed when hit with moves flagged as Wind moves rather than just Flying-type moves.

## TRAINERS ##
  • Gave Beauty Tana a Glitched Flabebe.
  • Bugfix: Fixed the Trainers on Fifth Avenue not initiating a battle correctly.
  • Bugfix: Fixed some Trainers in Tauri Park not initiating a battle correctly.

## GRAPHICS ##
