Released Pokemon Storage System

This project has a release available. The full version is still a work in progress.
Project Version
1.1.0
Pokemon Storage System

After a computer virus attack on a Pokemon Center, an Ace Trainer's beloved Pokemon are going wild in his PC! PC boxes 1 and 2 were rendered inaccessible by normal means, so Rotom and their trusty partner Porygon2 are called in to enter the digital world and resolve the situation. However, the dynamic duo already had a long, exhausting work day, so they gather their remaining strength and do what they can.

Notes
A game about double battles that hopefully provide a fair challenge. The length is about 30 minutes to an hour. This is my first jam game, so making this has been an interesting process. I would've liked to polish the game more if I had time, but either way it's still complete.

There were a few minor bugs in the original version that are now fixed in version 1.1.0. This should be the final update unless someone discovers new bugs.

Edit I now plan on expanding the game a bit once the judging period is over.

Change Log
  • Fixed a bug where the victory music was missing
  • Fixed some Gen6+ Pokemon front sprites were either too small or too far up
  • Fixed a bug where losing in certain battles would respawn the player in the wrong place

just finished playing the game! Some thoughts:
I really liked your game, the setting was cool and not really something I'd seen before. Playing as a porygon 2 and rotom duo performing maintenance of PCs was really interesting, and I like the way you tiled the digital world and turned it into something explorable. I honestly wish I had more time with the characters, but I guess at its heart this was a more battle focused game.

I should note I am very bad at pokemon battles, but I thought that you did a good job with making the battles difficult but not infuriating. I had fun figuring out strategies to come out victorious even if I did die like 4 times in some fights :P

But yeah, nice fun game, and defs good for a first jam game. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing porygon2 and rotom appear again, keep up the good work!

I really love that title screen - as simple as it is, the flashing lasers synced with "press enter" looks really cool!

I was super impressed by the following event depending on your party order! Seems like a tricky thing to pull off, and it's such a fun little detail to have! And the portrait system came out great! (Maybe a bit small? But that might just be personal preference?)

Translating the PC wallpapers to maps was really clever!

The battles do a really great job at making the player think about specific strategies with the Pokemon's moves! It almost felt like a puzzle sometimes, making observations like "This team's strategy is AoE moves where the partner is immune, so I'm supposed to use Mienshao's Wide Guard to counter it" or "Limber here means Rotom can't make use of Thunder Wave to power up its attacks, so I need to use another mon to take them out". I think there was maybe one or two matches where I felt like my loss was bad luck, but most of the time I always had the sense that I had learned something about the fight and could adapt my strategy further, which I think is really hard to pull off in a game with as many choices as Pokemon! (I mean, I know the restricted team definitely helps, but still!)

I could very easily see this becoming a larger challenge - the premise is perfectly suited to add more boxes, bosses, and recruits as you like - but it's still perfectly fun as what it is now!

Also, it's minor, but I'm obligated to say it every time - I always appreciate having access to running at the start of a game!
The logo feels a little too simple, especially contrasted with the background being so neat. (I feel like the green is also a bit hard to read over the blue of the lasers behind it.) I feel like just doing the standard Pokemon logo + "Storage System" written in some Pokemon font would look fine?

I was also surprised that the load screen was just the default UI, after all the work with the title!

Lose text still says you "Scurry back to a Pokemon Center", when that's not really what you're doing.

As much as I'm in favor of QoL stuff like multisave, it doesn't seem like there's really any need for it in this game? The only permanent changes are like, consumable held items or moves forgotten while levelling up, and you could get around that by having a move reminder/place to replenish items, so there's not really any need for the player to keep multiple save files. It's ultimately just an extra button to click through when saving.

The level numbers are really hard to see here.

A lot of the default Essentials UI is pretty useless here! You could definitely remove the trainer card from the pause menu - the player doesn't even need to check money - and the badge count from the save/load UI. And since there's only some held berries in the game, you could probably remove most of the bag's pockets, too.

Is it intentional that the boxes are labelled outdoor maps? I personally found the night shading a bit odd for a digital environment, but that may just be personal preference. (Pokemon in the PC need to sleep too, after all)

Weirdly, followers don't actually turn to face you when you interact with them? Kind of a niche situation, though, you have to interact with a follower after changing direction.

Oranguru is floating
1695111694182.png

Vaporeon is floating, but that's as a trainer sprite, so that's kind of a different situation

Noivern didn't have a cry, and I think that might be true for all Gen 6+ mons?

I got this error a couple times - don't remember much of the context, unfortunately. I think it's a base Essentials bug, looks like something to do with the AI deciding to switch? I can't really parse it myself.

This map is still named "public tiles", and you can see it if you save on it.
