"My life is dope and I do dope shit."
Welcome to the West.
You blew it. You absolutely blew it, dude. You could not have screwed this up harder. You've been arrested, booked, charged, found guilty, and sentenced. As a juvenile offender, you've won yourself a one-way bus ticket to Ms. Tibbleson's Center for Juvenile Delinquents and Other Wayward Miscreants, located in the West. That's your past. Your future, however, is up to you.
Who Are You?
The main character has been held legally responsible for an incident in their home town, but it's up to the player to decide what that means. Are you playing as someone who feel guilty even though the truth is more complicated? Does your dude refuse to take blame for something they clearly did? Was this all a big misunderstanding, or something she definitely planned? Do they approach every situation with a chip on their shoulder for no reason, or are they justified in being bitter? It's your character. You decide. I don't care. I'm over here, eating trail mix. You do you. It's my trail mix, though.
What Do You Want?
Once you've figured out your yee-yee-ass roleplaying justification, you have to figure out what you're doing going forward. Given that you live in a 2d linear Pokémon game, you probably don't have a million options, but there are certainly choices. Are you trying to catch 'em all, or just the powerful ones? Do you want to get revenge, make an impact, or just gobble some good gabbagool at Alfonso's? Do you even care about Pokémon? Pick a lane. You're going to end up wandering around a bunch of Gen 3-ass routes, so it might be good to have a reason for all that cardio.
We goin' (Pokémon) Platinum with no Features
West is notably devoid of classic Pokémon game\Pokémon fan game features like Gyms, Badges, the Elite Four, the Battle Tower, your mom, following Pokémon, grass/water/fire starters, edgelord violence, weeb bait, battles you're supposed to lose, Dynamaxing, Gigantamaxing, BigBigCrabMaxing, Pokémon Rangers, the Kool-Aid Man (pending), official NPC cameos, anime grunting, Mega Evolutions, women written by horny bridge trolls and preteens, custom tilesets, HM Slaves, tolerance for furries, fan service, Heatmor, I lied about the crabmaxing, level scaling, level caps, HMs, the fourth wall, Cynthia, Pokémon Contests, Pokémon daycare, Pokémon ribbons, Pokémon dolls, tutorials on how to breathe, tax-filing minigames, tile puzzles, creepy gym advice guy, Braille puzzles, shorts jokes for the ten trillionth time, Kanto references, and fake Pokémon. Instead, it has the following grab bag of random bullshit:
- Narrative (Personal): You begin the game as an incarcerated juvenile offender. Some characters will want you to stay that way. Others may want to see you free, but only for their own political gain. Well, except for Helpful Hector. He's chill. But most people are kinda opportunistic. You'll have to contend with them as you travel the West in pursuit of your own goals, ultimately looking for a way to stay out of the correctional system forever.
- Narrative (Region): The all-powerful Homeowner's Association, Farflight Property Development, better known as "FLIGHT," and others are angling to make sure that the West fits their respective visions, and you might be part of their plans. Over the course of your adventure, you'll have to pick a side, or a course of action, or at least get out of the way of people who do.
- Multiple Endings: Not every decision is a world changer. But many of the choices you make may leave a lasting imprint on small parts of the region.
- Dialogue Choices: West features enough branching dialogue options to give the developer carpal tunnel.
- Dialogue Consequences: Opportunities may close off or become available depending on what you say, and who you say it to. Some people don't care. Some people mean it.
- Roster: 151 Pokémon from Generations 1-8 that give the West a specific vibe. Choosing to catch 'em all is now a reasonable decision.
- Quality of Life Evolutions: All evolutions are level-based.
Trade stones and happiness meters are for cucks. - Side quests that vary in length and tone.
- 4th Generation-Style NPC Sprites
- The wackest MIDI selection of all time.
- Kareem Abdul Jableveland
- Occasional NPC "portraits" You'll understand when you see it.
- Hopejack. You aren't ready for Hopejack. But Hopejack is ready for you.
