The Story

Zazael team.png

Every hero has a hero, this is the story of a man who has yet become that inspiration for others. Set 10 years before the start of the main game, you are Agent Azure in conflict with the remnants of Neo Team Rocket and rumors of powerful new generation Shadow Pokemon. Infiltrate and eventually descend into the conspiracies to reveal the truth, put an end to a conflict, many battles overdue, and choose how you face your fate. But do not be afraid, you will be accompanied by Azure’s team of strong personality Pokemon you will not be alone in this decisive battle.

Pokémon Fated Destiny is a fangame developed in RPG Maker XP using the Pokémon Essentials v19.1 and RPG MakerXP.

While this may be a first game, I hope you’ll enjoy this preview of what is to come as you venture forward and grasp destiny in your own hands.

Loved it! I basically loved everything about it! The presentation, the framing device, the detail to make sure almost everything could be interacted with. I love games that encourage this by having dialogue for when the player examines everything and talks to everyone. Azure/Zazel and his party not being silent heroes really works to the game's/prologue's favor, and the detail of letting almost everything have interaction potential works in Azure/Zazel and his Pokémon's favor in turn. All of this has really done its job to make me hyped for the main game. The strong characterization and story potential chief of all.

Other things I loved:

* Loved that we have, because I am always for having, a canonically dark-skinned Black/Black-coded protag/player character in a Pokémon Game. We need more of that in general, including in fanworks!

* Loved Azure's/Zazel's character design, including his beautiful buffness!

* Enjoyed the prologue's use of "A Taste of Power" via Azure/Zazel and his team, as well as all those juicy items at the player's disposal!

* Loved the relationship between Azure/Zazel and his party. By the end, and indeed well before, you got the sense that he's been with his party since his journey began, presumably when he was a young kid/teen himself. The story and dialogue conveyed this superbly. Shout out once more to the detail given to emphasize and encourage environmental interaction.

* Loved the interactions between Azure/Zazel and the various Neo Team Rocket Grunts and Scientists. Especially in the Breakroom and the Waste Room.

* There's something so liquid-metal cool about the Pokémon Trainer having the power to utilize their Party's moves, including moves the Party once knew. So many awesomeness factors can be mined from that potential. (Looking forward to it being a way to incorporate the use of HMs and other HM-like equivalents during the main game. Indeed, kudos on the foreshadowing.)

* Other things I'm forgetting to mention at the time of this writing! Like the setup for main game events and stuff, including the new Pokémon Academy in the region.

Things I'm iffy on:
* Archer's reasoning is kind of difficult to take at face value; he fronts as noble and accuses Azure/Zazel of naïve myopia, but Archer's own foolishness, pride, and ego led him and those alongside and under him to work for a morally and ethically bankrupt entity that ultimately was (and presumably will continue to) making their lives all the worse. I don't think Archer and most of the NTR folks understand the depths of the damage they've all done and permitted to be done going further. So while Azure/Zazel's rage, even from a righteous foundation, needed to be tempered and his perspective perhaps more allowing for nuance than it had been through most of the prologue, Archer being the one to "scold" Azure/Zazel on this comes off as dishonestly patronizing from a narrative standpoint. Archer doesn't have the legs to stand on that he thinks he does.

* Opposing Trainer Battle Sprites would glitch in certain circumstances, often at the end-of-battle dialogue and especially likely in double battles.

* Players can't use Full Restores in battle. (Opponents can, but only very rarely and after significant effort on their AI's part.)

* The dialogue loses polish the later the demo gets. Most notably with the insistence of referring to Archer as "Arthur". I think there are other examples, but I'm not sure/don't quite recall them like I do the Archer misnaming.

Other things of note:
  • I hope we can continue to learn more about Azure/Zazel throughout the main game. The prologue does an excellent job of laying the foundation, but there's a lot more to know and learn. Chief of all, I'm interested on learning who Zazel was growing up.
We know he lost his own dad, Xidorn and Zaya's paternal grandfather, young, and we can infer this effected his outlook and influenced his trajectory into becoming the Super Agent and highly skilled Pokémon Trainer he becomes. I'd love more insight on how he was feeling and what he was like because of that, as well as what specifically led him down the path, including which opportunities opened to him, that allowed him to become a Super Agent. Like, I'm assuming he gained the eye and favor of someone who recruited him/became his mentor? Things like that.
  • I am curious how old Azure/Zazel and his twins are in the prologue. I think it was mentioned somewhere that the main game takes place a decade after the events of the prologue, so we can extrapolate how old the twin protagonists are by knowing how young they were then. Plus, I just wanna know how old/young Zazel is. (This is the Pokémon world, so I peg him an early-to-very-early twenty-something.)
  • I'm not sure what the takeaway was meant regarding Azure/Zazel and the mother of his twins (Xidorn and Zaya). Is he referring to Professor Cypress? Is Cypress the "ex" he alludes to regarding having bad cooking? I'm very curious to know more about these two, as you can see.

* Will there be any Fanmade Pokemon and/or Fated Destiny-original forms of any kind?

Well, that's about it for now. Once again, I love the Fated Destiny prologue! I'm looking forward to the next demo's release and seeing more development progress! :D Thanks so much, Ze and MetaSolaray, for making this as awesome as it is!

Thank you very much for the well detailed review of the Prologue! This really means a lot for my first project and fan game. I can answer a lot of those questions but can't go into full details as there would be a lot of the answered questions within the main game. Also all the bugs and some of the technical errors the Prologue had will not be in the main game.

So to answer your question
  • On Zazel and his past, there will be a lot told within the main game to explain who he was and some of his backstory.
  • The twins, Zaya and Xidorn will be ages of 17 as the main game does take about 10 years after the Prologue. You are correct, Zazel was around his early-mid 20s. :)
  • Professor Cypress is a very important character within the Fated Destiny series. She is the lover of Zazel and the mother of the twin protagonist. There is references of her and pictures of her looks on the Fated Destiny's discord.
  • As for another fanmade Fated Destiny forms I am unsure on that answer yet, I can talk to Meta on that.
Thank you again for playing our game and I'm glad to see you enjoyed it! :)

Thanks for your response!

It's good we'll be getting to know Professor Cypress in more detail as well as Zazel. That said, I do wonder who the "ex" Zazel referenced for having bad cooking was? Was it Professor Cypress?

I also see you're going for the "older teen"-as-Pokemon protagonists here.

Fanmade Pokemon and/or forms/evolutions/etc. do help spice up and give a game an additional layer of identity and playability enticement. So that's why I ask if they were gonna be a thing.

Another thing I realized I wanted to ask: which Pokemon will be available from which generations in the main game? I ask this primarily because, personally, I prefer games that have a curated Pokedex. I think the urge to include literal all available canonical Pokemon in a fangame "just because" often isn't as wise as many seem to feel it is, for various reasons that often crop it. Some issues include:

  • It can easily and frequently muddy the game's region's identity as an ecosystem.

  • It tends to cause overpopulation issues that ends up stuffing tons of Pokemon in every inch of the game, including in cities and towns were most wild Pokemon are kept absent from.

  • In tandem with the above it also makes it difficult to find any single individual Pokemon.

  • In contrast to a curated Pokedex, a kitchen-sink Pokedex makes it difficult to impossible highlight certain Pokemon via giving them new learnsets, new/buffed stats, and/or new forms and/or evolutions.

  • It can often lead to a homogenization of both gameplay and player choice.
Just a few follow-up thoughts and responses. :D I'm happy my review was useful and helpful to you! Keep up the awesome work!

Can I check, is the part where zazel left all his pokemon (except lucario) to escape and head back into the base the ending? I am stuck at level 3 with only lucario with no where to go. (I cant enter the doors), is this a bug or has the game already ended?

When it's just Zazel and Lucario, you should be able to go to the southwest portion of the Recreation Room where the Machop is. (Make sure Lucario isn't a follower Pokemon, to avoid a soft lock). Once you've done this event, go back upstairs and back to Archer's control room through the secret passage behind the Rhydon statue..

Hello Good Morning! Sorry I am just seeing this, I was informed by a member of the discord about this (for some reason I don't get notifications on this post.). First I would like to say thank you very much for taking the time in playing the game! <3 I have heard of this bug from another person. If you don't mind joining the server I can assist you much further on this bug. I am sorry you have been caught by this bug.

For all of those who get the soft-lock bug on after "split". Please contact me on discord ZeT0ken#0009 (best way to contact me) or join the Fated Destiny discord server and I can give you the data for the fix. 😁

How can I solve this unavoidable frozen
Before approaching that area with the Machop, make sure your follower Pokemon isn't out. It being out is what causes the freeze, as a "second" Lucario approaches behind you and the scene can't continue until it's standing right behind Zazel, which can't happen with your follower out.
