Hi everyone! I’ve always been interested in making a Pokemon fan game, especially one with fakemon; I even came up with a pretty in-depth premise, but never found the time to actually start any progress, until now. You might have seen my earlier post that was also calling out for fakemon artists. Through that post, we were able to get one person to help out, but 200 fakemon is a lot for just one artist to do! That’s why we’re putting out this post. I’m also happy to announce that we have made progress from the basic sketches that were in the last post. We hope to have a demo that goes up to the second gym done by July of 2023!

Pokemon Cloudburst takes place in the Kalma Region! You, along with your friends and pokemon, will explore a beautiful land full of icy tundras, lush forests, majestic fjords, and bustling cities in your quest to defeat all 8 gyms and compete in the Pokemon League. A wondrous new technology has also just been discovered! It will allow you to change your pokemon’s typing with an item called the Transfigurum, and shows a lot of promise in changing the scene of battling. Everyone is excited to see how this new technology will be used by the upcoming trainers in the Pokemon League.

But not everything is as perfect as it seems. There have been reports of vicious attacks, of these new forms of pokemon running wild. Could the Transfigurum item not be as safe as it’s creators have promised? And who are these strange figures who call themselves Team Cloudburst, and what are their goals? As these questions arise and the people of the Kalma region look for answers, we must all ask ourselves, is this technology really the beginning of a new era? Or is it the beginning of the perfect storm?

Here are the starters and a couple of fakemon lines that our art director Alex has designed:

Our fire-type starter: Charcabra is very clever, and is constantly trying to prove itself by taking on and outsmarting much larger, stronger opponents. They frequently use gathered food as traps against foes, and cache the rest of their food, leading to an excellent memory.
STARTER_water.png

The water-type starter: Seaglet are considered to be royalty, and are one of the most famous pokemon in the region. They were commonly given as pets to members of the royal family, and as such many rulers grew up and formed strong bonds with them.
STARTER_grass.png

The grass-type starter: Lantler often play-fight with others of their species, using their antlers and hooves. While they are usually calm and laid back, they can be provoked into aggression, especially when frightened.

Sea serpent line:
  • 1st stage: Snakesea uses its multicolored stripes as camouflage to hide in both forests of seagrass and on land. It’s small size means that it’s hard to catch, but someday it wishes to grow big enough to encircle the globe.
  • 2nd stage: Wurmarine uses its sleek and strong body to propel itself through the waves. It is incredibly vain, and attacks anyone who dares to touch it’s horns.
  • Dragon type 3rd stage: Swiviathan flies so swiftly that it is said to be able to circle the globe in under a day. It hunts in the clouds and uses its powerful hands and tail to grab onto prey midair.
  • Fairy type 3rd stage: Serpenarr are frequently used as transport for both human and pokemon families. As such, it is incredibly friendly and well mannered around most creatures, only lashing out when it’s passengers are in danger.

Sukimingu rarely backs down from a fight, even with a much larger foe, however, they are solitary creatures and if too many gather in one place, they are prone to panic and are easily distressed.

And here are some beta maps of the first two towns, Mosslet Town and Bergen Town, that I made (tile set credits to LotusKing, Aigue-marine, and Kyle-dove):

My main inspirations were other fan games like Pokemon Sage, Pokemon Solar Light and Lunar Dark, Pokemon Ethereal Gates (now Sea and Sky), and Pokemon Spectrum, among others. I’m hoping to create something similar. If any of this sounds interesting to you, please keep reading, because I’m going to need help if I want to end up bringing this idea to life!

First, to get some things out of the way: there’s no obligation to continue to work on the project for any set period of time. I’d rather not keep people shackled to a creative endeavour that they aren’t interested in, so if you end up getting chosen, working on the fan game a bit, and then decide you’d like to move on to something else, that is totally fine. You’ll get your name in the credits for any work you do. Again, you’re under no obligation to sign on unless you truly want to! Also, just to make this clear, you will not be paid for your work on the fan game, so please keep that in mind.

Now to get onto the actual submission process. It’s fairly simple: you’ll be given a list of fakemon ideas and then will have to create art for one line chosen by you from said list. Then, please either DM me the art or send it to this email address: fangamesubmissions@gmail.com; do whatever is most comfortable for you! After your submission is entered, we’ll look it over and see if you’d be a good fit. I’ve linked a PDF of the list of fakemon ideas, as well as more detailed instructions, below. Good luck to any who decide to enter!

At some point I’ll also need people to create the art of the trainers, do sprite art, create the tiles and maps, compose the music, etc. so if you are knowledgeable in any of those things, keep an eye out because I’ll put out other calls like this one! I look forward to all of your submissions, and thank you all so much for helping me make this dream a reality!
