I added a speed up button in Pokémon Gemme long time ago, it was for people who found the game too slow (40FPS was slow, I can't play any fangame that runs at 40FPS). The only matter with that for me was about the Pokemon info. I wrote a simple thing that detect if your savestate is cheated or not by calculating the amount of time you should have spend battleling to get your Pokémon at their level (considering the start level?). I had to disable the speed up during battle otherwise the detector could have been triggered ^^ (I calculate Game Time using real time.)

I think in general its a good thing to let the player the oportunity to speed up the game if he wants to.

It's more for if the game has a competitive scene. There's not many, but some do, like Reborn, Uranium, and Insurgence.

main reason i am considering it in my fan game is to really challenge the player even further than normal, but make it more voluntary rather than forcing challenge onto casual players.

i mean i know there probably wont be that many, considering most of us want a better challenge with pokemon games, but there is probably some casual players who wont want battered with difficulty.

also another reason is to promote the game's longevity, i want my fan game to be something that ppl will play with for tons and tons of hours, so in order to make that happen, enough content is of course required to keep folks interested long after the main story.

A Speed Up Button. Pretty much every Rom Hack and even some fan games have them. But are they really that necessary?

For content creators?
- Certainly

Pretty much every content creator I've seen playing fan games were always complaining about the same thing.
"Damn, I wish this game had a Speed-Up Button."

Yet why?! Well, okay. That's a stupid question. I know why. It's easier to get the grinding in those games done that way. Battling can be done much faster and video's can be produced much faster. That's good!!!!! (right?)

For me?
- Nah

I personally feel like speed up buttons take away from the experience in the game. Just speeding up every battle (and perhaps even dungeons in the games). What good does it do to your project?
Would you prefer people rushing though your game, because it's time consuming?
I personally wouldn't. Yet I've been given this question. "Will your game have a speed up option?"
When I say no, people seem disappointed. Is rushing through the game really everything these games are good for these days?
Playing very fast, sharing it and being the first to say: "HEY! I finished the game first!"

(Sorry if this was a little ranty)

What do you think?
I'm curious what your thoughts are about Speed Up Buttons in fan games.
Even though I dislike them, I am open to hear what others have to say and I'd really like to have an honest discussion about whether it should be considered or not.

Do you think Speed Up Buttons are a DO or DON'T for games?
I think it should have a button, it shouldn’t be way faster than the normal speed just a bit faster for battles because to me and probably many people who want it for battles the attacks happen a bit too slow. When I was little I didn’t feel annoyed by it but the past couple of years I’ve always liked a speed up button on gba and nds pokemon games to make the attacks a bit faster.

For debug is a must. It makes testing a lot easier.

For games, like people said, this is a bad and cheap way to solve game parts that are slow. This mess a lot with game feel.

In my game, I:
  • Increased run/bicycle speed
  • Increased text speed
  • Put an option to raise HP/Exp bars speed
  • Put a skip text button in battles
  • Speed up several screen fades (like when open bag/pokédex)
  • Increased battle start animation speed
  • Speed up some small things like the switch at party screen
And, if my game have too many cutscenes, I probably put a skip button in these scenes.
