Can you handle the cutthroat and perilous trials set forth by the judges?
This is IRON MAPPER: Relic Castle's mapping competition!

Trial 4: Trick House
Deadline: Sunday, June 19th 2022

SEASON 6 DISCUSSION THREAD

Iron Mapper
Iron Mapper is a mapping competition on Relic Castle. Each mapping competition, otherwise known as a "trial", will have a deadline clearly stated, and you will have this time to complete and submit a map according to the theme and criteria of the trial. Once all submitted maps are judged after the deadline (this depends on the volume of entries, usually a few days), the judges will post the results, and prepare for the next trial.

For more information (overall rules, how judging works, a list of trials) please visit the Season 6 Discussion thread.

Trial 4: Trick House

Deadline:
Sunday, June 19th 2022

Let's get one last trial in this season!

The challenge: Hoenns famous Trick Master is looking to move to another region. He can't leave his home region without leaving a worthy successor to test Hoenns fledgling trainers. It is your turn now to show the world that you were born a trickster like no one ever was!

Design a Trick House room. The map has to have a puzzle. As to what that puzzle is? Be creative! Maybe just a maze might be enough for the ultimate challenge. Or you might want to use old acquaintances like cut trees, strength bolders, ledges, pushable walls, conveyer belts, ice, etc or come up with something new and tell us all about the new feature in your notes! This time your trainer positioning will also be judged if you decide to include trainers into your puzzle. A map without trainers will be treated as having no trainers(which is totally fine too!). If you want to put NPCs in your map please tell us about them in your notes.

Try not to confuse yourself building this type of map that isn't too common in Pokémon games!

The following criteria must be met:
  • Any and all assets used in your map must be public or must be shared for public use in your submission post.
  • All public assets used for your map must be credited clearly and properly.
  • You may not use the tiles/tilesets uploaded by another participant for their entry in the same Trial as your entry. You can use the same public tiles, but not the tiles/tilesets that they made or compiled specifically for their own entry.
  • Fogs are allowed to be used. You must provide a fogless version of your map or it will not be judged.
  • Your tileset and fogs will not be taken into consideration when judging, so they will not have any impact on your chances of winning.
  • Your map cannot exceed 120x120 tiles.

Notes: Please refer to the annotated map for a guide on where the warp panels (yellow square tiles) lead to.
Coincidentally I was in the midst of doing some Bell Tower-esque tiles for my game when the trial came out, so of course I'm using them for this map as well. Password on scroll: "Trick Master is extremely lazy incredibly efficient..." 😅😅

Notes and explanations: Welcome to the most homely Puzzle House! Care for a spot of tea with a side of riddles and items?
Pressure plate are in visible groups. When all in the group are pressed, some hidden items become visible. The last plate in the first group is pre-pressed - teaching that if you step on a plate again, it depresses.
Trainers offer you a choice between battle and a riddle\trivia question. Both for the enthusiasts.
If you have potions and put them on the green stools in the same pattern as the cups in the first room, you will get a bonus riddle-off/battle with a teleporting Psychic and more items. Hidden items include potions, so no need to worry about running out.
Talk to the House Lead in a green dress to get an evaluation of how you did and get out.
Critique Requested: Yes.
Credits:[/b] to Ekat and Aveontrainer for the tiles used - School and Interior tilesets.

SEASON 6 DISCUSSION THREAD

Thoughts

Two potential successors designed splendid puzzle rooms! "You're almost my equal in greatness!", was Trick masters comment.

I was debating between making this challenge a gym challenge or a trick master room, as they share similar qualities. In hindsight it might have been better to make this challenge about gym puzzles, as it would have been more accessible. It might also have been pr though. Non the less: I'm very happy with the two submissions!

Now it's time for everyboody to take a break. We will see each other again in Season 7!

Critiques

We decided to give you the feedback of the two judges seperately because we feel that having multiple perspectives can be helpful.

Tiles are not being judged. We might still have left feedback on those if we felt that we had some.

First off, I appreciate the use of the gen 4 Bell tower tiles, I think they are very suiting of a Trick House Style map. The background tiles however, contain a lot of leading lines which can be distracting and take the players focus off of the map itself. Having pokéballs and trainers evenly spread around the room encourages the player to fully explore each corner of the map, which is a really nice addition. The map has a good flow to it and everything is spaced out really well and accommodates the adventurous mind of the player. I would have liked to see more puzzles/tricks used throughout map. Although the map has some minor issues, it was very well done.
  • The map looks very consistent, but is subtile enough to let the player focus on the puzzle.
  • I like the optional rock smash areas. The shortcut also blocks the backtracking option though. Also the only non optional rock smash rock is at the end. If rock smash is mandatory, there should be a rock smash rock blocking the player somewhere at the beginning.
  • I would leave a backtrack option without teleport above the bridge. Forcing the player to look for the right teleport pad when they just want to leave is usually a bad idea.
  • Teleport pads are great to show the player glimpses of future goals like the scroll or hidden items. Leaving the player with some information but not a cohesive map. You incorporated this concept pretty well by havin multiple loops. At the same time I would have wished for a bit more visible help for the player. Like some Pokéballs they can look for or the location of the scroll.

I love the different variety of puzzles on this map, from strength boulders and memory games to mazes and pressure plates! My favourite puzzle would have to be the green stools, since you have to memorize the position of the cups in the last room. Giving the option to answer a riddle/trivia question instead of a battle is a great addition to a Trick House. As for criticism, The map would have benefitted by using a different tile as the pressure plate, making it more easier to tell that it is an actual pressure plate. I'm a little bit confused with what exactly the middle puzzle on the middle room is(partially due to the pressure plates). Overall, I think that this map is fitting for a Trick House.
  • Tile-Error: incosistent floor tile in the right room.
  • Great job of ramping up the puzzle difficulty(strength, pressure plates).
  • Giving the player a baby tutorial for the cups as you did for the pressure plates would have been great.
  • Good variety of puzzles.
  • There is a lot of dead space and some decoration seems a bit random. Why is there a Bookshelf/fridge/couch? Maybe a more interesting room layout might have looked better.
