Pokémon Perilous Heights

You've been up and down this mountain probably a thousand times. You know every tunnel, every crevice, every crack in every rock. And a nice story or five, to tell to the tourists who book your hiking tours.

So the tour for the married couple who want to let her father relieve some old memories should be smooth sailing, right? There's always some danger involved, but nothing that's not manageable. Rampaging Pokemon, paths that are blocked by sudden rockfall, irregular weather or giant unmarked tunnel systems that lead deep into the mountain.

Play as Hiker Henry and discover that there lies more beneath the surface of Mount Ygaros than he previously expected.

About

I realize quickly that I actually don't have too much to say about this game in particular, and I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. It's mostly a story-driven adventure, and I've been starting to play around with mid-battle scripting a bit to maybe provide some challenging battles along the way, but that's basically all I want to say for now.

As for the theme of Rebirth... I'm not sure if this counts. I tried to center it around it, but it came out more about immortality than rebirth if you break it down. But I'll... well, I'll let the judges judge that.

The game is nice. I like the music choices.
I also enjoyed the battles. Even though I blacked out in three or four battles, every black out gave me an information about how to get through that battle and I always managed to find a way through them. The number of items were perfect also as by the I almost used them all.
The only minor bug I encountered was at the start of the act v :
If you go back in the building before taking the elevator key, the animation with the old man and the image showing the name of the act plays again when you leave the building to go back into the forest.

Thanks for reporting that. I see the issue, and I'm gonna upload a fix for it soon-ish. In the meantime, this Aggron will actually flee from the battle after the turn you bring it below half health, and if it does, the cutscene will play out normally.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but I had a lot of fun. It definitely fits what I consider to be a classic game jam formula of nice short story with well implemented pokemon aspects; well-executed with few bugs. I also thought the music choices and maps were great too. Most importantly the story took lots of turns I wasn't expecting and it was fun! I would make one suggestion though.

It would be good to clarify that you don't need to constantly inject yourself with the serum for the rest of your life to keep the hallucinations at bay. Since that's what stopped them in the first place and the one journal says it's a treatment not a cure, I thought Henry would be needing to keep the suitcase and constantly injecting himself.

Thanks for making a fun game.

Really really fun time, I'm a big believer in short but high quality, and this game is exactly that. Pokemon choices felt carefully considered, items weren't too numerous but weren't scarce either. And the story was similar, well considered not anything nuts but a good story start to finish. I haven't gotten a chance to play through every game in the Jam yet, but thus far this is the one I had the most fun with!

This is the perfect kind of jam game imo, a short but very focused experience, that tells an interesting story.
I'm a bit too sleepy to write out detailed thoughts so I'll try to keep it brief.

I really love your games, your "formula" of taking a normal pokemon and extrapolating its abilities to imagine spooking scenarios is really really fun. So I once again loved this game and what you did with parasect. Story was great and interesting, as soon as the intro finished and I was pushed down the mountain I was fully invested, and the story kept snowballing from there. It was great

A small thing to note that I found kind of cool is how "iconic" each location in the game felt. There were 3 areas for me, and they all had pretty big story implications behind them, and were all visually diverse. The snowy mountain, the science lab, and the fungi forest. It just makes for a really memorable setting, super awesome stuff.

Nothing bad to comment about the game, but I guess it did leave me wanting to know more about the fungal virus and what happened in that lab all those years ago. Was the project just shut down and everyone of those researchers now happily leaves with a parasect? Or did they suffer a worse fate and all lose the ability to control their brain and die from lack of nutrients while the Professor somehow escaped? But I guess at the same time, having these details be a bit more vague makes it interesting and allows for the player to think some more when making the final choice.

Thanks again for making a great game!

This was a well-paced adventure!! I had a good time playing through it! The story and concept is handled really well, and I have a soft spot for established characters with an occupation. I think the idea of just taking a Pokemon and then expanding it is an excellent idea for a game jam, and I think you hit all the proper notes really well.

My critiques would be the encounter rate, general Pokemon diversity, and a biiit on the pacing near the end. I was really well invested pretty much the entire game. I was caught between the weird cycle of the very high encounter rate, combined with not wanting to use the max repels 100% of the time (due to wanting to catch Pokemon), and Pokemon diversity being a little underwhelming. While technically max repels given partly solved the issue, I think I would've preferred a less crazy encounter rate and slightly better Pokemon variety (a lot of pokemon had very high rates of encounters and others had very low resulting in 7 arons in a row before I saw some other Pokemon) to really balance out the way encounters worked, instead of going all or nothing.

The storyline was actually pretty solid, and the battles were fun to play through without anything being too overwhelming. Pacing was excellent and the game was a perfect length, albeit I felt was cleared up relatively too fast near the end. I think the dialogue writing/styling for all the characters felt a little samey, bar the old guy.

This was a great project overall though, and I had a really good time with it!
