PokeGodot Needs Your Help!

We are currently prioritizing programmers, sprite artists and animators, project managers that can help organize the project, and discord managers that can help improve our discord server. But we are also looking for game designers, 3D modelers, social media managers, and discord mods to help keep our server safe and fun. Our team currently consists of our head developer, RandomAccess, as well as a few programmers and a sprite artist. We hope to increase this number as this project is very ambitious.

What is this project?

This isn't a game, but a full blown game engine. Specifically one utilizing Godot, an open source game making software that anyone can download and use with its full features right now for free. Pokemon Essentials is a great engine, but there are plenty of limitations that come with sticking with the 2D grid-based Game Boy Advanced style Pokemon games. We plan to make this a Pokemon fan game engine for making games in a 2.5D artstyle (that being 2D character sprites in 3D environments) as its default feature. We believe this will make creating games in multiple styles much easier, not to mention completely sidesteps the issue of map layering. Our engine will have a 3D grid based level builder perfect for making games in the DS style, but it will also have free multi-directional gridless movement like in the modern games. We also plan to have both classic and modern mechanics available through toggles, including an option to have real time attacking Pokemon on the overworld that you can directly throw PokeBalls at like in Legends Arceus, and having battles taking place in the overworld rather than a separately loaded arena. If you're not into that, we also plan to have toggles for classic random encounters and grid-based movement. You could even have both random encounters and overworld encounters on. Long term plans include following Pokemon, riding Pokemon, and the highly ambitious goal of having animated sprites for every existing Pokemon.

What have we done so far?

Not much honestly, but a promising start. We currently have a functioning level builder, basic character movement, and loads of data sheets containing essential Pokemon game data that can be converted into readable JSON files. We're recruiting more people for a reason, we are few and overworked. Below you'll find examples of what we have so far below. (player character sprite is an edited player sprite from Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and will be replaced by a unique sprite in the final build, as provided by The Spriter's Resource)

How can I join this project?

For questions, contact the lead dev at
his discord - randomaccess.
his twitter @RandomAccess64
or join our public server at this invite - https://discord.gg/MDBZRNU5JD

Even if you don't want to join the project as a dev, feel free to follow us anyways if you're interested in keeping track of our progress.

Why are we doing this?

This project was created to give future aspiring fan game devs a chance to make their own dream Pokemon game the way they want. We plan to do big things with this project, many we're saving for future reveals, but it will need a lot of support. We will be very grateful for any contribution, as this is a labor of love and passion. We hope to see to this project's completion so that fans can enjoy it for years to come.
