Gimmick Types. How to make them work?

So I think we might already be used to types such as Shadow and Nuclear that try to do something with system and they have their features (disobedience, SE against everything, their own weather...). But how could this feature be expanded?

They could get different downsides and upsides. Rather than disobedience and hitting everything super-effectively. The new gimmick type could make the Pokémon unable to switch or be unable to use items or status moves.

One could also try to give them lesser side-effects but try to make them -almost- regular types, with decent enough weaknesses and resistances both offensively and defensively (which could allow more Pokémon to have the type naturally or higher BP moves) while trying to retain the special shtick of gimmicky types.

So what do you think? Could these sorts of Types be any different while still being entertaining enough to be a core feature of a game and, maybe, achieve some sort of engagement or balance?
