EVs on Pokémon - limits?

This is a brief one - I'm looking to have some Pokémon yield higher/different EVs when defeated. That said, I've never seen anyone mention if there's a limit to how many EVs can be granted from defeating a Pokémon. Most things stop at 3 total or less, so I was wondering if anyone's messed around with certain Pokémon yielding 4 or 5. Too much? Does anything outright stop this from happening, like some sort of internal cap?
