Introduction
Pokémon World Summit EX is a Pokémon Essentials v20.1 expansion and overhaul of an existing Pokémon fan-game made for the Relic Castle Game Jam, released earlier this year. I highly recommend checking out the completed games page here to see the general idea of what Summit EX is built upon. Otherwise, please check out this playthrough of the game by Tomix9tomix to see what the game is all about.
We had tons of fun creating World Summit in a month for the Game Jam, but feel that the concept of a multi-generational battle simulator, with iconic characters and easy to jump into gameplay, had more to give than what we achieved for the Game Jam.
All-New Features and Additions
Our main goals with World Summit EX are the following:
- Add both Generation 9 Pokémon and both Legends: Arceus and Scarlet/Violet characters to the line-up
- Expand Generation 1-8 trainer rosters, with more special characters (Rivals, Protagonists, Professors and more)
- Add a new hub world, to interact with other characters like never before. Shops will be moved into this courtyard hub area.
- Major rebalancing of both the Pokémon and trainers from the first game.
Role Recruitment
We are currently recruiting for the following roles:
Competitive Pokémon Expert
We are looking for people who are familiar in Competitive Pokémon to give guidance and assist in creating sets for each Pokemon, suggesting new moves, abilities and items and assisting in balancing and team building where appropriate.Character Writers
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that dialogue and character writers might be the most needed role as of right now. We have a intensely large roster of trainers to fight against, with that number ever expanding in World Summit EX. Their current dialogue is limited to before and after battle speech, however, with Summit EX, we hope to have the player interact with these iconic characters more. This does require new text written for familiar characters. Plenty can be taken from their original games, but it won’t always be a solution. However, getting to write dialogue and fun conversations for all of these well known characters could be a fun challenge for a aspiring writer!Scripters
As we have decided to rebalance the entire lineup of fully-evolved Pokémon, we have created concepts for many new moves and abilities that need to be coded into the game for the Pokémon and trainers to use. We are also working on new systems and internal mechanics to make the game's pacing and content smoother and would love any assistance we can get on the coding front.Team Builders
There are already over 100 teams in Pokémon World Summit. However, with World Summit EX adding even more trainers and even more ways to fight old trainers, many more teams must be created to support this goal. If you decide to take on this role, you would mainly be creating a team with EVs, Items and strong move sets whilst still sticking true to the character you are working on.Generation 3 Styled Overworld Sprite Artists (Potential for commission work also!)
For the original release, we commissioned sprite artist Horo for Generation 3 style overworlds for characters that did not already have public resources. However, we only commissioned them facing one direction for the fight room, limiting what we could do with the entire cast. In Summit EX, we would like to have these characters existing in the courtyard, with players able to approach and talk to them. This means we have to greatly expand our overworld output. This is in addition to making new sprites all together for Legends: Arceus and Scarlet and Violet characters. So this role is for those who want to make exciting new resources for famous Pokémon characters, that already have plenty of reference shots to work with!Generation 3 Styled Map Artists and Tile Artists (Potential for commission work also!)
In our original Summit game, we had only a few maps in the entire build. These were a lobby map, an arena map and variations of those two. We would like to go much further with our environments in the future, including a full courtyard area for trainers to shop and hang out in. We would also like to create battle arenas themed around each type, so battles feel different to the last visually. We would also like to create individual lobby rooms for each Region of the Pokémon world, showcasing its culture and unique appearances.
Conclusions
We are really thankful to all of the Relic Castle staff for hosting that original game jam, which forced us to buckle down and really create something special. Something, we believe, so special, that it has far more potential than what was seen a few months ago. As of this post, we are officially listing Pokémon World Summit as completed and consider this next game to be its sequel and successor.
