Let me begin by saying that this is in its infancy, the majority of this is just the idea and has not been created. The purpose of this recruitment is really to build a team who want to work on this project and create a game that goes beyond traditional Pokémon and provides a lot of replayability.
Roles Currently Needed
While I have the skills to do the following roles, I find that working within a group and delegate helps to progress the project more quickly.
- Tileset Artist(s) – for various environments including swamps, fjords, salt flats, seagrass meadows, and more
- Sprite Artist(s) – for Pokémon variants and character/trainer designs
- World Builder(s)/Writer(s) – to bounce ideas around and to build out the region, its main adventure, and subquests, based on the story and map provided
- Script Writer(s)
- Interested persons who feel they have something to offer
Pokémon Climate Redux is themed around climate change and takes place in the Morinet Region (Morinet is a mashup of two Latin words, "moriens planetae," meaning "dying planet" which I thought was appropriate). The overall goal is educational; however, there’s nothing better than a solid adventure that brings some doom and gloom while being secretly educational. This region is divided into 3 subregions – coastal, continental, and oceanic. For this first segment, we’ll be looking at the coastal subregion which consists of a wide variety of coastal and wetland environments (fjords & mangrove swamps) and anomalies (tide islands & coastal dune lakes).
Kit: Latest version of Pokémon Essentials
The Adventure
You find yourself coming of age in a world where the climate is running rampant on environmental, social, cultural, and economic cornerstones. Different climatic events are occurring all over the region, in large part due to dangerous practices implemented by rogue scientists, businessmen, and politicians known as the Noxin Society. During a small celebration in your town, a terrible climatic event occurs directly after a sighting of the Noxin Society was reported. As a new member of Professor Aero’s Regional Protectors, the Professor and their assistants have tasked you with bringing the Noxin Society to justice.

- Physical Variant (Luvdisc) – Same type, different looks
- Environmental Variant (Lapras) – Different type, different look (Dark/Water) – affected by environment
- Climate Form (Oddish) – Different type, different look (Fire/Ghost) – affected by climate
- Kangaskhan/Pokémon Skull
- Discord or RelicCastle DM – FlyingBananaTree #8547
- Fandom Wiki in the works
- Likely to set up a discord for group communication
- Variations/Forms
- Physical Variant – same type, 3-5 different looks
- Environmental Variant – different type, different look (affected by environmental location)
- Climate Form – different type, different look (affected by climate change)
- New Typing
- Energy, Sound, Cosmic Typings
- Adjusting traditional Pokémon typings (i.e. Gyarados should be water/dragon)
- New Trainer Classes – Activist, Billionaire, etc.
- New Moves – specific to new types, climate forms, and environmental impacts
- Weather & Terrain
- new over world weather patterns related to extreme weather and natural phenomena -more moves usable outside of battle for practical purposes
- terrain impacts during combat affecting stats and if certain moves are usable
- New & Updated Evolutions
- related to variants/forms
- fan theories (i.e. Cubone and Kangaskhan share a common ancestor)
- evolution methods – new evolution items (Pokémon skull) & evolving due to condition (burnt/frozen/poisoned/etc.)
- Link Stones – no trading required
- Gym Leaders, Gym Challenges
- in addition to traditional gym battles, gym badges are connected more to the storyline - before being able to battle the gym leader, they will send the adventurer off to complete a minor quest related to addressing climate change in that specific area (saving a Pokémon, retrieving an item, preventing a natural disaster, etc.)
- gym leaders play more of a role in the story arc as well, and provide side quests in the post-game
- each gym is themed after a natural disaster and/or the environment where it’s found – for example a Flash Flood themed gym would likely be water/electric and any coastal associated Pokémon; whereas a Wild Fire themed gym would likely be grass/fire and any grasslands or forest related Pokémon.
- Elite Four Replacement – The PokéDome
- instead of there being an Elite Four to compete against, there will be the PokéDome - a tournament style competition that pits trainers against trainers
- This sees the competition as a bracket of 64 trainers. The 63 other trainers will be randomly generated from a list of NPCs from the Morinet Region as well as from the original Pokémon regions (think gym leaders like Brock and Misty, professors like Oak and Birch, notable villains like Jesse and James, and random characters from the anime).
- In-Region Pokémon
- Fakemon are TBD, but I am open to the idea – if any, most likely specific to new typings as well as climate related concepts
- All Pokémon before the national dex is available will be environment specific, so you’ll find variants of Oshawott, Bruxish, Pincurchin, and Staryu (among others) in the Kelp Forest for example
- Endemic and Invasive Real-World Species will be considered for the regional Pokédex
- For animals that are vital to or are destructive in a given environment that don’t have a Pokémon equivalent, either (a) a variant form will be created or (b) a fakemon will be created
- Real-World Application
- In the same way that NPCs in the original video games randomly gave information about the game’s development or Pokémon history, I plan on doing similar, but more relatable things regarding climate change and environmental impact. Not only will it inform about impacts, but also will provide real-world solutions that currently exist or are under development (space mirrors being the most outlandish). All of the information provided in-game will be based in factual evidence and sourced from international reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, and reputable news sources.
- Post-Game
