Does anyone have any tips on how to modify RPG Maker scripts to make a monster catching game that's like Pokemon but not?

I know Pokemon Essentials is out there already, but the creator of the project has already clearly stated that it is not okay to use it for commercial use. I might at least want to make something I could post on Steam or some other popular game sharing site as a free download.

Plus, even if I'm not be planning to try to sell what I make this time, having the freedom to do so might provide me with more incentive to stick with the project.

I realize I could check the main RPG Maker forum, but there may not be very people who are interested in making Pokemon-like games on those forums.

You'd be pretty surprised to know there's been a lot of people who wanted to go down that route on the RpgMaker forums, and If I remember correctly, some scripts that allowed just that had been released- it's been quite a long time though, not sure if you can find them. There is however a way to sort of come up with a similar system without utilizing external scripts too much. Check out this thread:

Well, your username sounds similar to that user's, are you the same person?

I know your question revolves around RMXP usage, but aside from RMXP, there are some plugins for RMMV which, if tweaked, can help you achieve what you want. Keep in mind that RMMV uses Javascript instead of Ruby.

Other than that, there's Dragonite's Do or Die Gamemaker 2 Engine which has incredible potential since it's modern and can also be used as a base for a "catcher" jrpg styled engine. You need Gamemaker. I think it uses GML, which is more similar to Python.

Lastly, you might want to consider NuriYuri's PSDK, an RMXP, RGSS3 upgraded Fangame Engine, although you should ask Nuri about the license, and you'd have to remove all references to the Pokemon franchise if you get greenlighted to develop on it for purposes other than fangame creation.

Thanks for the information. I may look into those. The main reason I'm not using Gamemaker is it's not free, but if there's an open-source version of it around, I might want to try that.

I still do a double-take whenever I see someone recommending my thing somewhere.

Anyway another thing to consider if you want to quickly share something on Steam is that RPG Maker VX Ace and MV have workshop support, so if you make something you could just throw it out into the world right from the IDE. They're both currently massively discounted on Steam for the autumn sale.

Aside from that, I don't really hang out in the general RPG Maker sphere so I don't know what plugins people have made for it, but monster catching in general is decently popular so I wouldn't be surprised if scripts / extensions / plugins have been made for it by now.
