I've decided not to make a Pokemon fan game (a game that uses Pokemon names, sprites, worlds, characters, etc.). Instead, I've decided to make a Pokemon clone game (a game that plays a lot like Pokemon but does not include any copyrighted or trademarked material from the game it's imitating.) It is my understanding that, while fan games are normally not permissible by the game creators, because they contain mention or likenesses of copyrighted material, they have no say so over clones because, even though they may have (VERY) similar game play, they do not contain any of the copyrighted or trademarked material the original game creators control.

The problem, though, is I'm not sure I even know how to make a JRPG monster catcher without using Pokemon Essentials, and the person or people who developed it want it only used for fan games. I would not have the right to do whatever I want to do with my game if I used PKMNE.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I really want to have complete control over anything I make.

Plus, I think I'm kind of becoming a fan of Pokemon clones, as since they play so similar they have to be really creative with the story, and they offer little touches that real Pokemon games don't offer, like allowing you to catch all of their game's legendary class monsters or allowing you to play on a mobile device. Plus, they are très cheap; some selling for less than a dollar in the app store!

Also, if I make a generic JRPG monster catching game, can I enter it into the contest here, or is the contest just for JRPG's that use the "Pokemon" moniker?

Yeah, I've been trying to teach myself Ruby to get a better grasp of RGSS before I try and edit a bunch of things in RMXP, but it's been kind of slow going. Those of you who are decent programmers, how did you get that way?
