Released (Pokemon) Xenoverse: Ordem Et Chaos [DEMO 1 & 2] - A remake of (Pokemon) Xenoverse: Per Aspera Ad Astra

This project has a release available. The full version is still a work in progress.
Project Status
Demo
Project Version
1.1.0

Order is born from Chaos, but this is merely the start of its gestation.

Engine: Pokémon Essentials v21.1

Premise:

The original Xenoverse holds a very special place in my heart, as the first fangame project I have been actively following for years finally coming to fruition. Over the years since its release, me and a lot of other passionate fans have had time to assess this charming, flawed, uneven game, and we felt like it deserved a second shot, to become the best version of itself it could possibly be.

With the formation of Beehive Studios and the former developers moving onto an original IP, our as-of-now-unnamed Team has taken the opportunity, with the permission of said original developers, to retool this game while preserving as much of its original identity as possible.

This is going to be a remake of Xenoverse, using Essentials v21.1, and this demo covers the first couple Gyms of the game, plus a little bit beyond that (everything before the Galvantula Boss + new stuff we added)

Plot Summary:

Months have gone by after the player character's father, esteemed researcher and family man Versil, was kidnapped by a mysterious figure from his past.
Now his child, Kay or Alice, has set off on a journey across the Eldiw Region to grow strong and find out who has taken their father and why.

In their travels, they fight off invasive X Pokemon from another dimension, the Xenoverse, as they wreak havoc, overtake territory, and endanger the lives of the people all throught the region.
These encounters, however, are often less than spontaneous, as their appearances are tied to the criminal organization called "Team Dimension", the ones responsible for their father's kidnapping, whose ranks are filled by robots instead of people.

Among the many mysteries of the Eldiw Region, the Starter that has chosen Kay/Alice seems to have a connection with the very forces that make up the fabric of reality, which becomes the point of interest for a young and brash cyborg, with a Pokemon who seems to share this connection alongside the Starters.

For those who are familiar with Xenoverse's plot, this doesn't sound too unfamiliar, but the details and the context have been completely overhauled, while keeping the broad strokes of the story and the various set pieces mostly intact. I like to think that all the changes made were for the better, but I require feedback to be certain.

What's new?

The original Pokemon Xenoverse took place in an original region, featured Fakemon and Mega Evolutions and had a heavy focus on the story. None of this is going to change, but a lot of things around this framework have, and let's start off with a bang with:

Rewrites

While putting a lot of focus on the story, especially in the later half, this game seems to have never gotten the privilege of a second draft, and all sorts of creative turmoils behind the scenes have led to the overall story feeling very... unfocused and non cohesive.

This is where this whole project started, my rewrites of the story that tried to tie together concepts introduced later into the very start, ensuring a more solid foundation from which the game itself could be built upon in terms of narrative. While the characters will be largely the same, outside of a few exceptions, I hope you find them more fleshed out and compelling than their original counterparts, especially since, as I said, the story is still going to be one of the main focal points of this game.

Re-Balanced

Many Pokemon from the original game have been rebalanced, that comes with the fangame territory a lot of the time, and some need it more than most (Looks at... all of Gen 2), but usually you don't really need that many powerful Pokemon if the trainers are as easy as they normally are...

But not anymore! Because now the Trainers are (hopefully) gonna pose a real challenge, mostly in the important battles. Said battles are also mostly going to be double battles, as to spice up the gameplay experience, showcase potential strategies that help make bosses stand out from one another and allow more playstyle variety.

Bossfights

Speaking of battles, however, one of Xenoverse's biggest claims to fame was the X Pokemon Boss Battles, which sees you fighting a Pokemon with boosted stats and multiple health bars, and while that has remained, the boss battle mechanics have been remade to add more variety. You use 2 of your Pokemon to fight 1 Boss, like a reverse Totem Battle, but aside from the Pokemon you fight being stronger, they also possess multiple phases, where upon triggering the phase change all status and stat drops vanish, and something else happens to shake up the battle and make one boss more distinct from another.

When I mean that important trainers and bosses are more powerful, however, I don't just mean their movesets and items (although they are), but they will also, after a certain stage, have fully realised IVs and EVs! Don't panic, because there's two other factors you need to consider:

1) We have a plug in that allows you to customize your own EVs from the very start! The EV Pool scales up with your level, so if you want to, you can try tailoring your mons to your needs.

2) ...A lot of these tougher buffs are reserved for the new Hard mode, and while Normal Mode is also gonna be harder, stuff like EVs and IVs and incredible items and moves is something that will be introduced more gradually later on.

In short, your Pokemon are stronger, your enemies are stronger, and you are gonna have all the tools you need to face them and then some!

Even more Fakemons

We couldn't resist this one, this is what Pokemon is all about, creating creatures you can play with, and we wanted to stretch our creativity too! We mostly added more regional variants, so as to not leave Eldiwian Meowth completely alone, some Convergent Pokemon because those are just fun to design and come up with, and a few special scrapped Gen 2 Pokemon that have been given new life and new places in the world.

There are plans for more regional forms and some brand new X Species Pokemon too, but those are best for locales that are beyond this demo's reach... for now.

Gotta Catch them All

Xenoverse's original Pokedex was by no means small, but since this franchise is all about monster collecting, I have decided to expand it even more, but to incentivse the player to actually CATCH the Pokemon, another fangame has shown me how to cater to that design philosophy.

Pokemon Tectonic is a game entirely revolving around catching Pokemon to reap rewards in the form of EXP Candy and other items, so you can get any wild Pokemon into fighting shape (up to a level cap). The feedback loop of catching pokemon to get rewards so you can beat bosses to then unlock the ability to catch more Pokemon to reap more rewards is one that I find to be pretty engaging and satisfying, as such it has been applied to this game, with the addition of it being integrated with the Achievement system of the original Xenoverse too!

Dens

Dens were a really neat idea, exploring mini dungeons with your Starter to obtain some loot and engage in puzzles really helps both fleshing out both your connection to the Starter the world the Pokemon live in, since it is a den and all.

This game also had some great puzzles... in the postgame. Yeah, it took them time to get good and most of the dens just... aren't. Most of the original dens puzzles rely on trial and error, and all for loot that is not worth it at all.
Well, not anymore! Now there's more loot then ever, the loot is (hopefully) more worthwhile, and the puzzles have been diversified! This demo has 3 real dens to show that off, but there's gonna be way more in the future.

DEMO 2 UPDATE:

Been a while, has it not? We have finally done a new Update for this demo! Going all the way to Ishtar City's Gym, this second demo includes half of what was the pre-expansion Xenoverse, remade!
We updated the download links at the top of the thread, but I am providing them again here, alongside some reminders and updates on the various changes this remake brings.

Changes and Additions:

That is to be expected, powercreep from later generations has led us to make a lot of re-balances to existing Pokémon, especially the less powerful or represented ones.
Going over each and every change would take really long, as the Pokédex is massive and I believe that discovering (most of) them in-game would be more satisfying, but know that a lot of new moves have been added, new mechanics have been implemented like Acid Rain weather and Silky Terrain... terrain, and type matchups have been adjusted in part because of the original Xenoverse's new Sound type, which has also been adjusted from the way it was in that game.

The quick way to represent the various type changes is in a chart that looks like this, defensive matchups on the column, offensive ones on the row:

Xenoverse-UPDATED-Chart.png

More Helpful Pokédex:

Due to many of the changes, there are Pokémon that will perform pretty differently from how one would expect them to, and as such thorough documentation has been provided... by the Pokédex.

There are now multiple pages for every Pokémon, which will allow you to see their Abilities, Base Stats, Evolution Methods (if there are multiple, you can switch between them), Level-Up Learnset, TM Learnset (with the TM's Number becoming visible once you have obtained it) and Egg Moves, though this list has basically been repurposed as the real Tutor Moves list, as every non-TM move is lumped in there for the sake of organization, both on the developer and player ends.

If you want to know the changes before obtaining or seeing the Pokemon in game, you can learn about them here:

Spreadsheet containing all Pokemon in the demo (and some from later, we're constantly updating it)

Exp Candies:

One of the core problems with Xenoverse, and with many mainline Pokémon games, is that to onboard a new party member, you are forced to halt any and all progress to grind for levels, so you are encouraged to stick to the same party from the start of the game to the end, with only one or two members being added maybe.

To solve this problem, a Fangame called "Pokémon Tectonic" has employed many inspiring and bold new systems, chief among them being to hand out Experience Candies upon reaching certain milestones, such as obtaining Achievements and catching all Pokémon inside a specific route and encounter terrain (Grass, Taller Grass, Sand, Mud, Gravel, Swamp, Water, the terrains each had their own set of encounters).

We have implemented a near-identical system, not in code but in spirit, as you are outfited with an Encounter Tracker after the first Bossfight of the game, which lets you see what encounters the route has to offer (if you have seen the Pokémon before already), what their encounter odds are, and will dispense a reward of Exp Candies (level depends on how far along the game you are), which you can use on your Pokémon to get them caught up with the party or up to the Level Cap.

Yes, this game has Level Caps, it was necessary due to this system, but I will elaborate on them a little later.

There are other ways to obtain them, however, as fighting with Pokémon that have hit the Level Cap will store some of the Excess Exp into a Reward Machine you can find in every Pokémon Center. There, you can redeem any and all Excess Exp gained by battle as Exp Candies, so that you have other means of farming, for them for the convenience of any newly added party member, and also Achievement Reward Items (Achievements were a thing in the original game, but now some can hand out items, and good ones at that!) to make you feel your progress that much more.

EV Allocation:

Another reason why it was more convenient to stick to the same party all game long was EV gain, with every battle fought they became stronger than any other member of their species caught fresh from the wild.

Now, however, EVs are always available for you to allocate whenever you want, from that Pokémon's stat screen. You don't get to put 252 in two stats immediately, though, you have a pool of EVs that grows the more levels you gain, the maxium amount of EVs being made available once you reach the mid-50s.
This not only allows new Party members to perform just as optimally as the veterans, but it also allows you to tailor your stats to whatever challenge lies ahead of you, especially useful for higher stakes playthroughs like Nuzlockes, or for some of the tougher bosses later in the game.

Difficulty Modulation:

While you are asked at the start of the game whether or not you want to play on Normal or Hard mode (which you can change by talking to the Abra in every Pokémon Center), that is not the only method of modulating difficulty. You are also given the choice, in the Options Menu, to turn EXP All On or Off, and also to adjust Level Caps between Hard and Soft.

A Hard Level Cap is exactly what it sounds like, but while Soft Level Caps do allow you to over-level, you won't gain any Experience from Experience Candies or the Exp All, so it will take more effort to brute-force your way through fights with raw numbers, should you want to do that.

Pokémon Dens:

They were already present in the original Xenoverse, but now they have been updated to present better challenges, provide better loot, and be more readily available across the board. They are little puzzles that your Starter will tackle, so if you want some brain teasers, or just that sweet, sweet loot, go out there, find them and have fun!

Non-forced Starter:

This is the part where I bring up more story-relevant features, as this game does have more focus on the writing, story and characters than any mainline Pokémon game. One of said characters is your Starter, your lifelong friend and companion who shares the adventure with you, explores Dens for you, and protects you when things get dire... However, this is still a videogame, and one where you are deliberately encouraged to experiment with party composition.

So as to not force you to dedicate a party slot to them always, like how the original Xenoverse did, we allow you to make them inactive from the party Menu, by giving them a special storage of sorts, where they are always with you physically, even if they're not part of the active party, which is the best of both worlds. They're always with you, even if you don't deploy them. Also you can't Box or Release them for obvious reasons, but again, you still have a choice in whether or not you want to use them in battle.

Journal System:

While this thread has mostly been about the gameplay aspects, don't let that fool you, the first thread will tell you that I am a story guy, I love writing, and this feature was made so that players can discover more things about the world as they explore, and gain insight into the player character's thoughts, feelings, and their relationship dynamics with other characters outside of cutscenes and despite them never talking out loud.

The Journal is divided in 3 Categories: People, Places and Notes:
  • "People" hosts the entries about the characters, and will be updated both in artwork and in text content as things change over the course of the story.

  • "Places" are entries about the cities and locales you explore, mostly, and won't often gain new ones unless the circumstances demand it.

  • "Notes" are often the ones you unlock by interacting with people or signs, and will often be about specific topics. Some are made available by default, such as the details of the new Sound type or the Reward Machines, some are unlocked through the story, but most of them are only unlocked through exploration and interaction with the world.
This is all part of the PokéWES system, and while it's all functional, there's still work to be done on the presentation.

Hints:

This game, with all the new systems taken into account plays differently from most mainline Pokémon games, and I can definitively say it's not as casual of an experience, especially on Hard Mode where bosses require preparation. It may not be for everyone, but in case you are interested in a different experience, here is some insight gained through playtesting:
  • You can access the PokéDex Data from a Pokémon's summary screen. Whether in the party or box, which in turn lets you know their stats, learnset and evolution requirements. If you are uncertain at any poing regarding what your Pokémon can and can't get, you can consult it quickly at any time.

  • Keep a Party Rotation box. Lots of mons can give choice paralysis, but I found that the best way to play is to have a rotation of Pokémon of varying types, type combinations and types of attackers that you swap between depending on the situation. Some matchup favor Special Attackers, others favor Physical, some favor certain types, keep a variety of mons around and you should be able to cover your bases.

  • EV Editing matters. You need to make use of it, especially on Hard mode, or else your Pokémon will end up with worse stats than in most other mainline Pokémon games, because EV gain is no longer passive.

  • Coverage is king. Enemy teams are alot more varied in terms of types, both Gym leaders and regular trainers, so you in turn are encouraged to have more type variety. This can be in STAB types, or coverage moves.

  • Exploration is heavily rewarded. Talk to people, interact with trash cans or pots, look around every crevice, explore dens. This will allow you to obtain valuable loot that will help you on your journey.

Continuing From Demo 1:

Is it possible to continue from Demo 1? Yes, we have implemented many safeguards to ensure a smooth transition, should you choose to, even if individual, already generated Pokémon whose species have been rebalanced after Demo 1 will be stuck the way you obtained them, requiring you get a different one from the same species. Do I recommend it? No, not only for the already expressed reason, but also due to story and progression changes that have been made to the early game.

I feel comfortable asking players to start again due to the lack of content present in Demo 1, compared to Demo 2, and as such the relatively small time investment. This will not apply to future updates, however, as the early game has been finalised and will not be affected by major shakeups again.
This is a very ambitious project, I am well aware of that, and we as a team will value any good-faith feedback you send our way, as we wish to make this game the best version of itself it can possibly be. This new demo will cover up to the 4th Gym, so that should be a meaty chunk of content, and for those who played the original already, the story has been dramatically changed in this section specifically.

Hope you enjoy this, don't be afraid to provide feedack, and see you next update (unless you join the Discord Server).

I found out about this like super recently and I gotta say, it really will make the original obsolete once this is complete (not to diss on the og).

Like it does seem to keep its promises on improving everthing. I had so much fun with how many QoL it has over the OG, having level caps while making it easier to get exp really made it easier to build teams. I also really enjoyed being able to start a battle with a trainer and not have to wait ten seconds for it to go off, it also runs a lot more smoothly in general.

I've only really noticed two bugs. The den with lagging tail on Mt Stardust causes an error that closes the game and the alphabet puzzle flagged the correct letters as wrong restarting the final section over and over till I restared the entire puzzle.

Otherwise pretty clean.

Can't wait for next update!
