You need to download the 4.2.0 version. 4.2.1 got a bug that freezes when you return from vacation.

There's also another way to get a gengar, which is to go through the tunnel at the badlands which takes you to an alternate version of it. Here you can find wild gengar, machamp and alakazam. Although if you're early in the game, catching them will prove difficult. It's definitely worth a try...

I just used the zippyshare one. You don't have to restart your progress, because I didn't have the need to do that.

I wish I would have read that sooner. Now I'm stuck there too. I just went there in hopes of getting the final member for my dark type gym, and while I did find it now I'm stuck until this gets fixed or I restart from the beginning. I don't feel like starting over, so I guess this game goes on...

You can at least find a Pawniard in the Cast Iron Cavern. If you have just started out you might want to avoid the trainers in there though.
